1. The write-in votes always count, but in this case they outnumbered the number of votes that Jones won by. They probably helped Jones more than hurt him.

2. Senate seats are for a 6-year term but this election was to replace the seat vacated by Sessions. Jones will be up for re-election in 2020, which is when Sessions' 6-year Senate term would have ended.
