What is it about our brains that they go into hibernation when we engage in political discourse, to the point that we cannot even recognize that the things we say are highly implausible or even nonsensical??

It's sad, really. More than that, I think it's dangerous to our democracy not to have a populace that at least tries to think clearly about issues.
