Here's the thing about free speech - it does not - exempt you from consequences

I haven't read the article. I'm not going to. People ranting about "free speech" make me crazy. If this was a coffee shop, it's presumably a private enterprise and they are legally entitled to serve whoever they want to serve within the bounds of defined discrimination laws.

The First Amendment protects people from government retaliation against their speech. It doesn't say anything about your neighbor or the guy next to you on the train when you start to spout whatever it is that they don't like. You can say whatever it is you want to say...... you just have to deal with the fallout from it.
