The $91,000 Traffic Ticket - Sue

Guess what?

If law enforcement officers find out that you own something they want -- cars, houses, cash -- they can just take it without ever charging you with a crime (let alone a conviction).  It's called CAF (civil asset forfeiture).  Robbed of your assets, you are then robbed of due process because you can't afford to fight back.  If you are charged, you have no assets to hire defense counsel.  Virtually nobody ever fights these because they cannot afford to.

There is a YouTube video of hidden camera footage of a cop meeting/convention where they were laughing about how some guy was driving a brand new, shiny, beautiful Mercedes convertible and how they couldn't wait to get their hands on it!  In the case of cars, many wind up sold privately to LE officers or driven by them.  (I know a fed who drives a Cadillac that was seized.)  The "leftovers" -- the ones the cops do not want -- wind up at public auction.  Real estate is usually sold for the proceeds.  Cash is cash, so obviously it is just absorbed.

Don't ever assume that because police charge someone with a crime they "must be guilty."  Many people do that, and nothing could be further from the truth.

Then there are the cases where -- as mentioned above -- the person is NOT charged with any crime.  Enter the story of hte $91,000 traffic ticket.
