He is donating it to worthy causes. He is forced to take the salary by way of the Constitution but doesn't keep it. (See the interview with Leslie Stahl in Nov. 2016).
In the first quarter, he donated his payment, a sum of $78,333, to the restoration of Maryland's Antietam National Battlefield. His second quarter is going to the Dept. of Education. (See CNN of July 2017).
He donated a total of $260K to 2 battlefield restorations.
For the second quarter in a row, he opted to give to a government entity, this time to the Department of Education. (See Town and Country Magazine, also July 2017).
