I've had a smart meter - for

about 3 years. My electric bill is about 10% lower overall. Also, during the summer, when there is a day when electricity usage is expected to be higher than usual, the electric company sends out advance notice of a special "savings day." People with smart meters can choose take steps to reduce their usage during stated peak hours and receive a credit on their bill. I've really only made small adjustments on those days, but I have always received a credit, sometimes quite significant.

The smart meter has been beneficial for me. YMMV.

You are likely being charged extra for refusing the smart meter because they still need to pay someone to go out and read your meter. As more areas are converted to smart meters, the distance between the "refusers" will become longer and the logistics of reading the old meters will become more difficult, so the surcharge will likely continue to increase. How much of your quality of life are you willing to give up over time to make whatever statement is being made by refusing the smart meter?

There comes a time when one really needs to reevaluate reliance on "I have heard that ..." and conspiracy theories. They're entertaining and all, but do they really make any sense? Are they making anyone's life better? It is likely that they just result in a lot of cutting off of noses to spite faces with no benefit to anyone.
