My parents - what I had to do

Posted: Oct 16th, 2017 - 2:33 pm In Reply to: How does one convince their elderly parents - to go to assisted living. sm

First, I think a daily weekday visiting service is a great idea. It may only be needed for a couple of hours a day or so. When I was looking into at-home care for my parents there was a service that prepared meals for the entire weekend so by the time the help left on Friday, it's all set up for the weekend. If your city has a council on aging, they can be a great help with resources, etc.

My parents got to the point that I had to give an ultimatum of calling adult protective services because the situation was so bad. My dad likes to say he took care of my mom with severe dementia, but he really wasn't. He kept her alive and fed, but that was it. When I stopped by and saw that my mom had been sitting in her own incontinence for a couple of days, that was it. My dad always just said "we'll think about it" whenever I suggested outside help. I found a place for my mom in memory care within the week and told him she's going, you don't have a choice.

A year later my dad realized he needed assistance and moved to a senior independent living home where he never has to cook or clean. The relief now that they are both where they need to be is huge. I finally sleep all night again.

Good luck to you, it's a tough road.
