Semiautomatic and automatic weapons - Mary

I have a question or conservative gun owners. I honestly, truly am looking for answers or an explanation so I could gain a better understanding of this issue. How does one justify wanting to buy/own semiautomatic/converted-to-automatic weapons? For recreation? For protection? If the latter, from what, a roving band of zombies trying to break in your house?
