Robert Mueller, the former FBI director leading the Department of Justice's Russia probe, is reportedly gearing up for an indictment of Paul Manafort in the case.
The New York Times reported that after the FBI conducted a pre-dawn raid at Manafort's Virginia home in July, Mueller's prosecutors told the former chairman of President Donald Trump's campaign that he will be indicted.
Mueller's team is looking at whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russia. Related to that are investigations involving Manafort and allegations that he violated tax laws and laundered money, and a probe examining former national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russia.
The Times noted that people close to Manafort and Flynn have testified in front of grand juries regarding what they know.
The July raid at Manafort's home involved FBI agents using lock-picking tools to open his door instead of knocking — which means, as the Times reported, the FBI might have been concerned that Manafort would attempt to destroy evidence if he knew federal authorities were knocking on his door.
CNN reported, meanwhile, that federal investigators secretly wiretapped Manafort before and after last November's presidential election. The network noted that the FBI obtained a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant last year to conduct surveillance on Manafort. This surveillance occurred after a previous investigation into Manafort was stopped because of a lack of evidence.
The new warrant continued into early 2017, CNN noted. That FISA order led to authorities searching a storage unit Manafort was using this year.
What's not clear is whether any of Manafort's conversations with Trump were captured by the surveillance.
There are several ongoing Russia investigations in Congress as lawmakers try themselves to determine whether anything illegal occurred regarding the Trump campaign and Russia.
