When I was just - starting out

Posted: Sep 10th, 2017 - 11:25 am In Reply to: This is exactly why right to work is bad - for our workers

in the late '70s, I worked for a grocery chain that paid us 20 cents more than the local union grocery stores so that we did not want to go union - I made a whopping 3.87 per hour! I worked for them for 14 years and was happy. Several years and almost 2 decades later, I had to join a union to work for a call center that handled pharmacy benefits for medical insurance companies. It was all fine and good until our contract came due and the company told the union that we either took a cut in hourly pay (we were highest paid call center in the company) or they would close our doors! The union didn't even take it to a vote and the company closed us down and laid us all off! I do understand that unions have their place, but my experience has turned me sour on them. I wish companies would just treat people right and not look for ways to pay less and profit more for themselves.
