LuLaRoe and Mary Kay -- multilevel marketing scams

Posted: Aug 13, 2017

This is a very interesting article on the scams behind LuLaRoe.  See also the Pink Truth website about LLR and Mary Kay.  Note the tone and language that LLR used with a consultant (a retailer) on Pink Truth, implying that the person should be ashamed of failing to make money, when the truth is the company profits by selling inventory to consultants and that 99% of consultants lose money.  Sounds like the MTSOs -- selling services high and browbeating MTs into producing more and more for less and less money.

Thank you for sharing this article link here. I don't like this company and feel that it's a ripoff for the consultants, as well as the customers. However, it's very difficult to convince them of this. It seems the brand name sells itself. Very sad.

I purchased a dress through a Facebook "party" sponsored by a family member. It was very cheaply made, very simple with no buttons, zippers, or that sort of thing. It cost $65 plus shipping. The fabric seemed to be some sort of stretchy polyester. Having sewn myself, I recognized it as a similar fabric I had purchased online for $4.00/yard, and this dress would only need about 3 yards. The company makes "limited editions" due to, I think, purchasing a limited amount of each fabric cheaply in bulk, and when it's gone, it's gone.

I've thought of making some like this myself and selling online, but it's too difficult to fit a customer long-distance. As it was, the dress did not fit me, the company could not tell me the exact measurements for each size, so my guess was inaccurate. Due to the company's marketing, I found it interesting that I was able to resell the dress very easily for $59 on eBay. Due to the brand, the buyer seemed to think it was worth it. Again, it was very sad.

I really like MOST LLR clothing, but the sizing is anybody's guess. I've found that on Facebook there are many "discount" groups, where you can find items as low as 60% off (which means that's what the consultants must be marking up? Not sure how it works). My gripe is some styles have sleeves that are ridiculously tight compared to the fit of the bodice, and sizes are not consistent, even within the same style. I purchased two dresses, identical style, identical fabric, just different prints. One fit me fine, the other I could not even get on. That's a HUGE size difference. So, for the price LLR is asking, I feel quality control just isn't there. They do have a return policy, in case an item is defective or does not fit, but you're out the shipping, which is pretty high depending on the consultant's policy. As far as style, fabric, and price, as a larger person I'm able to find more flattering clothing in a variety of styles and colors through LLR than I am able to find in local stores, so I'll continue to haunt the discount groups, but I cringe at paying retail for ANY clothing, knowing that the company pays pennies for something for which I'm paying $50-60.

I've noticed a LOT of consultants going out of business lately as well, so if you do like the clothing, search for the "going out of business" sales. The market is saturated right now and consultants are scrambling to make sales.
