CA assembly leader shelves single payer health plan.

Posted: Jun 24, 2017

health care system in California dimmed Friday when the leader of the state Assembly announced he doesn't plan to take up the single-payer bill this year. Speaker Anthony Rendon called the bill "woefully incomplete." "Even senators who voted for SB 562 noted there are potentially fatal flaws in the bill," the Los Angeles-area Democrat said in a statement. The bill, which has passed the Senate, lays out a plan for a government-run health system in California, but it doesn't include a way to pay for it. Rendon said the bill also doesn't adequately address delivery of care and cost. The bill has an estimated price tag of $400 billion per year. Paying for it would require new taxes and cooperation from President Donald Trump's administration to redirect existing federal money. It would guarantee health care for all California residents and eliminate out-of-pocket costs for consumers, like copays and deductibles. "We are disappointed that the robust debate about health care for all that started in the California Senate will not continue in the Assembly this year," Democratic Sens. Ricardo Lara of Bell Gardens and Toni Atkins of San Diego, the bill's authors, said in a statement. "This issue is not going away." The legislation was championed by the state's nurses' union and the Democratic Party's more liberal wing. "The California Nurses Association condemns the decision by Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon to destroy the aspirations of millions of Californians for guaranteed health care," the union's co-president, Deborah Burger, said in a statement that also critiqued the timing of Rendon's announcement, which was sent out shortly before 5 p.m. "Announcing this decision at 5 p.m. on a Friday afternoon is a cowardly act, developed in secret without engaging the thousands of Californians who have rallied to enact real health care reform." Rendon suggested the Senate draft a new version of the bill that addresses how to finance the plan and more clearly details how it would work. He also suggested the plan could be taken to voters in the form of a ballot measure. In the meantime, he said he would not advance the bill through the Assembly committee process. "This action does not mean SB 562 is dead," Rendon said. "In fact, it leaves open the exact deep discussion and debate the senators who voted for SB 562 repeatedly said is needed.";

I'm surprised they didn’t pass it to find out whats in it. It worked so well with Obamacare.

"Free" anything means the price will go up. How to pay for it? - I thought it was free (sarc).

Potentially fatal flaws in the bill...

There is not enough money in the world to provide “free” health care to everyone.

Free to the left means redistribution of wealth. Subsidies are - free to them but not to the taxpayer

paying them. Like EITC. Sometimes they get more money back in taxes than they paid.

cheaper and they didn't push drugs for everything like they do now.

Originally health insurance was just for what they used to call major medical or catastrophic. They didn't cover all this other stuff. That's what real insurance is.

Yeah and back then - you could get

$1.50. Percentage wise, HC and college has gone up over 500% while the others you mentioned have not.
Everything has gone up. I remember bread at 29 cents a loaf, - cigarettes 25 cents a pack. nm

Just like with Obamacare, we were all correct back in 2009 - when we said that once the freebies

and the gravy train of "subsidies" started rolling for more takers, Congress would be too cowardly to ever turn off the spigot of "free" money.

This is just a microcosm of what is coming.

One of my biggest objections to Obamacare - nuff

[ In Reply To ..]
One of my biggest objections to Obamacare is how it was rolled out. That large of a bill should have been read and I thought I learned in school that you had to read all bills before you signed them.

This is what infuriates me. They listen to Nancy Pelosi who you know by now lies just like the rest of the bunch of Ds. Anyway, that was the most ridiculous thing she ever said and immediately made me not like her. No transparency at all. But then there was none in the Obama administration. All they did was hide truth or not tell it no matter what it affected.

You can continue to drink the Koolaid but not me. I am going to think for myself. I am sick of the fake news and all this hype to upset elderly people and those who have no health insurance like my cousin who for probably over 20 years has none. We in our state have a plan that I tried to get on though there was a waiting period. She cannot get it because her husband makes a little too much and she has had to pay the penalty rather than buy her own which would be extremely high.

Why should insurance companies make so much money off of our misery, illnesses, and our very lives. It is time that insurance companies stop thinking in terms of their stockholders and start caring about individual people. That is the way all the Wall Street should be. I know investors have a right to some return, but not money hand over fist when it hurts average people or the poor.

We have been notified next year our premiums are going up - 40%, which means taking a

serious look at dropping insurance all together. At this point what is the sense of paying this much for insurance when it would bankrupt you anyway? This is the insanity of healthcare and it is not the insurance industry’s greed, it is the overregulation and lawyers sucking large settlements off of doctors and hospitals doing their jobs.

There is no plan some egotistical politicians in DC are going to magically produce which will solve this crisis.

The plan developed by the Freedom Caucus is the best plan you are going to get out of the District of Corruption so pass it and move on to the real bill which is the budget. The Federal gummit has no business in HC so minimize the damage it can cause and move to cutting as much out of this monster as possible and then go to the next issue. There is a simple analysis of any bill before Congress which is does this bill give Americans more freedom or less. Most bills give less such as Obamacare with its mandates. At least this bill gives more freedom by getting rid of the mandates.

Obama conditioned us to talk about health care as a “game” where there are “winners” and “losers.” There is no longer a moral or ideological position about money. Money is created from thin air by the Federal Reserve via quantitative Ease. How can such a substance be something to have moral arguments about?

Reality stinks but I have faced it. The Marxist will get their single payer eventually and sooner or later this 20 trillion dollar-and-rising debt House of Cards is going to collapse.

Patients would no longer face financial barriers to care such as co-pays and deductibles, and would regain free choice of doctor and hospital. Doctors would regain autonomy over patient care. ...
