The Unaffordable Health Care Act

Posted: Mar 17, 2017

I am now paying 3 times the amount I was paying for insurance premiums only 3 months ago.  I'm making 1/3 of what I made 15 years ago.  I am literally working for minimum wage.  Something has to change or I'm joining the millions of people, including illegal immigrants and people who refuse to work, to get my free insurance, too (which I'm now paying for).

;

Are you complaining about your employer's plan? - or your minimum wage?

Don't understand your post.

Unaffordable.... - Pun

All of the above AND upset that I'm working 8 (and sometimes 9 or 10) hours a day so I can afford insurance and pay for someone else's insurance who either just strolls in through the border and refuses to work or a citizen who refuses to work (for minimum wage if need be) instead of living off the government (you and me). As a very young child, my mother had to go and get government cheese and peanut butter literally shoved at her so she could feed us. It was humiliating for her. She also worked 8 hours a day on her feet waiting tables to try and make ends meet. I'm 60 years old at this point. I have found a new job in this industry and working at home so I can now take care of my mom. My beef is with the rest of those people who think they're either "too good" for minimum wage jobs or just plain want to play the system and get "stuff" for nothing that you and I are paying for. Believe me, I'm grateful for the help we received years ago, but there were no food stamps or subsidized housing or actual money handed to my mom....it was a little bit of food and that was it. There was an incentive to get off your butt and go get a job, ANY job to feed your family. They make it very easy for people to game the system now without much oversight and I'm sick of paying for other people's stuff.

Can you tell me what you are for? - sm

1. Old system, people go to the emergency room for routine care, the very sick enter the health care system when they qualify for Medical Assistance and care is very expensive, and health insurance costs keep going up? Where people are afraid to start their own businesses or change jobs because they might have a lapse in their insurance? Where you can get cancer or have some other condition where you hit the lifetime cap where you lose your home, savings, and possibly die? And we, the people, get to pay for those high insurance company profits?

2. ObamaCare, where a basic minimum of insurance is guaranteed, more people than ever are covered under insurance and people with insurance are no longer having to declare bankruptcy. Keeping in mind that some very possible small fixes could be made (that the Republicans did away with) that would make the program even more successful? Also keeping in mind that the cost of insurance averaged over the years is less than before ObamaCare?

3. TrumpCare that would increase uninsured people by 24 million and other consequences (see consequences in #1) give huge tax cuts to the rich and increased insurance company/CEO profits, while cutting women's access to birth control and decreasing Medical Assistance for the poor and unfortunate?

4. Universal care. You are paying insurance premiums now--why not just change that to a single payer, no crazy insurance profits and no one has to worry about losing homes, savings, health, life.

Please pick one.
Congratulations - Blah, blah, blah

Congratulations, you know the far left, socialist propaganda handbook by heart. Universal health care....are you serious? Have you ever read anything about Canada's health care system? Waiting months for an appointment for chemotherapy or surgery....I could go on. I have had cancer....I worked every single day through treatment and, call me crazy, but I never expected anyone to help pay for my situation. Life is hard. Get a job. Pay for your own stuff.
I actually have read about Canada - and other countries
[ In Reply To ..]
and read on many boards and most of them think we are pretty stupid for not having universal healthcare.

I do have a job and would be paying for my own health insurance with universal healthcare. My taxes would go up but so what, I would be guaranteed healthcare.

I know life is hard, I do work and I do pay for my own stuff.
I forgot option #5 - Thanks for reminding me

5. I got mine and I do not give a hoot about you. Yes, I am a jerk.

Isn't it, except for those still believing the American Dream of capitalism benefitting THEM. Wake up and smell the coffee...there will be no pot if gold at this rate unless you are part of the 1%.

Not many jobs out there for 10 year olds. - You had it good

I was 10 when my mother got cancer and died. She lay in the bedroom for almost 3 months in unbelievable pain where she could hardly move or talk. We lost our home from bankruptcy. I ended up getting a small SSI payment through my childhood and college years. The community basically came together and supported all those unmet needs when a 10-year-old girl does not have a mother who cares about her.

Since then I have spent most of my life working in occupations where I could help the poor. I know people benefit from Meals on Wheels. These are old people who can barely get to the door, but are independently living and not in the nursing home. I know of children who were helped by the WIC program whose mothers were basically juvenile delinquents on drugs, but their kids got better nutrition and had better mothers because they received some parenting education. I know of many unplanned pregnancies that did not happen because women were able to get confidential birth control counseling through Planned Parenthood programs. I know that the National Institute of Health has kept many horrible diseases from becoming epidemic and the research they do to learn more about diseases. I know that programs like Head Start and school lunch programs have helped disadvantaged kids become successful, productive and happy adults.

You need to look beyond your door into the real world.
Did you even read my post about - being a child

and benefitting from what they used to call ADC (aid to dependent children)? My complaint isn't with 10-year-olds, obviously. I also help others who need help through my church and community. I'll try this one more time....I have a problem with people that REFUSE to work and live off the system....got it now?
Who are you to judge who is worthy and who isn't? - pfft

Having a mother who is alive and care about you is about 100 times easier to live with than watching your mother die in pain. Have some compassion. You have no idea who is should have help and who shouldn't.
I am sorry...I can see I hit a raw nerve - Praying for you.....

You have obviously done a good job of picking yourself up, working hard to get where you are today and doing good things for others and I applaud you for it, really. My prayers are sincere...I wish you all the best in life going forward.
Thank you. - sm

is something that isn't necessary or known how to be found by the right at all. It's unimportant to them. Why wouldn't it be, their leader just throws out little blurbs, accusations and insults and gets away with it and provides no proof of ANYTHING, so why should his followers. You know the game follow the leader, right? They all qualify for participation awards for just playing the game.

Health Care Reform-Question About Canadian Health CareDec 03, 2009
So....a friend is for our US health care reform (already retired and on Medicare) because he had no trouble going to Canada to get laser surgery on his eyes so he wouldn't have to wear glasses and states there is nothing wrong with the Canadian system....but, and I'm asking a serious question here, how long do people really wait for emergent surgery if they belong to the Canadian system versus the American system as we have it now? How did Canada get their health care system up and ru ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

The Rage Is Not About Health Care Mar 29, 2010
By FRANK RICH Published: March 27, 2010 THERE were times when last Sunday’s great G.O.P. health care implosion threatened to bring the thrill back to reality television. We Need Universal Health Care.Jun 23, 2017
I know Obamacare needs some fixes--at least it was a step in the right direction.  I am still doing reports where people are in the acute care hospital setting because they did not take their maintenance medications for hypertension and diabetes, etc. I do not know why they let their Medicaid lapse, but they are in crisis. The Top 10 Stupid Things Said About Health CareOct 15, 2009
By Ken Kupchik Stupid things are always said in politics, whether it's to curry favor with ill-informed constituents, or because a politician is a missing filter between his brain and mouth. Common Sense Health Care Nov 05, 2009
Common Sense Health Care our Nation can afford. - This makes sense to me.   The American people have spoken. How To Achieve Affordable Health CareDec 23, 2009

Judge Rules Out Health Care LawDec 13, 2010
This is good news.  Now if politicians could just make health care affordable for all.  I'd love the same rates as someone in Idaho or other states have.  Make health insurance competitive, they have to accept pre-existing conditions and nobody could ever be refused health care and I think that would be a great way for a new year.  But forcing people to buy a product they don't want is just not right and I'm glad this judge saw how unconstitutional it is. &nbs ...

Fraud In Health Care SystemMar 13, 2010
It is estimated that there is at least 100 billion dollars health care fraud annually.  There are truly needy people and they should be helped.  But there are also many people who don't have health insurance because they just do not want to pay premiums, use their money for other things instead, when they could pay and are able to pay.  This is just not right and this needs to be stopped, and that should make a dent in health care costs.  Why not go after the health care ...

IRS Will Enforce Health Care Bill Mar 19, 2010
CBO estimates IRS will need nearly 17,000 new agents to look for people who don't buy a government-mandated insurance policy. This is basically going to be another reason to audit tax returns, and people who don't comply will essentially be treated like tax evaders with the IRS using its "normal" powers of enforcement by levyings fines, penalties and liens against bank accounts, seizing property, etc. And, assuming that the IRS will fold this into its usual enforcement operations, ...
