Alternative minimum tax

Posted: Mar 15, 2017

Trump and the Pubs want to get rid of the alternative minimum tax.  Based on what is known about Trump's finances now that those 2 pages have been revealed, he would have paid a tax rate of 3 1/2% without the alternative minimum tax.  This would probably be true for the other millionaires and billionaires as well.  What do you think that would do to the federal budget and the national debt?

The rich would have more money to donate to their favorite charities - sm

That somehow seem to always benefit the rich.

Possible scenarios on tax release info. - sm

1. Blackmail? Do you think someone released the first 2 pages to scare him into a payment to not release the "real" information--like revenue sources, payments, the line for Russian bribes?
2. The Russians/Assange are giving him a warning that they might disclose more info is he does not "toe the line"?
3. That Trump himself released the 2 pages hoping it would distract the press while he deals with his Russian coverup and TrumpCare disaster?
4. That Trump himself released the 2 pages hoping that he could increase the wrath towards the press and call it fakes news? That would be really strange, because it IS news that he did not release them earlier and he himself says they are true. It does seem plausible, as when listening to the story "break", Trump responded so quickly as if he was waiting for it and had something prepared. Usually, when he is surprised, there is no comment until the 3 a.m. Twitter rant.

Interesting. Any other theories?

The AMT needs to be eliminated - not for Trump but millions of - others.

There are lots of problems with this tax. For instance, it hits taxpayers differently in different states, it hits taxpayers with more children harder than it does those with fewer or none, etc. It's a hot mess.

Learn something about the ATM and then tell me how a liberal supports it.

That would reduce taxes for million/billionaires - sm

Billionaires would have a lesser tax rate than the poor. Just as the Republican elite would like it.

Horrible to lose such lovely children with so much yet to offer.  If you had to go on a rampage and kill people, go to an old folks' home.  As I get closer to being in one, I think I'd probably appreciate an early end.  Also, they are certainly easier to catch (just being morbid).  Seriously, BAN ALL PERSONAL GUNS.  Nobody really needs to kill anything unless they're going to eat it. ...

Ebay As An Alternative?Sep 11, 2015
I just typed a report where the patient significantly reduced her stress by quitting her job and selling stuff on Ebay. I know I read somewhere on here something about this but I don't remember if it said what people sell. I tried selling my own art that I created on Ebay and Etsy and I made about $40 a month for a couple of months and that is before the fees etc. Mostly I made nothing. I sure envy the artists on both of those sites that make decent livings. I added up the past items s ...

Possible Alternative Answer To Food Stamp FraudMay 17, 2015
Well, unable to get to church due to a knee joint flare (not mine) and playing nurse, I noticed others were asking below for alternative solutions to food stamp fraud other than Scott Walker's expensive and absurd plan to overhaul the EBT system to restrict types of food and drug test recipients.  So how about this? Ask the food stamp recipients to turn in their monthly grocery receipts to their caseworker for review.  Give them 3 strikes or they're out.  Not only does ...

Amid Clinton Controversies, Democrats Yearn For An AlternativeMar 05, 2015
The full article is at the link, but one paragraph that stood out to me:   “The problem is, there’s nobody out there who’s not Clinton who’s the equivalent of Barack Obama,” said Larry Drake, chairman of the Portsmouth Democrats in New Hampshire. “He was a fresh face . . . and he gave great speeches and he turned out to be electable.”   This is a GOOD thing. We don't want another Barack Obama. We need someone who can dig ...

Minimum WageOct 23, 2014
I heard a fellow on TV the other night say (quote?) a conversation at the dinner table the night before with dad telling his children "my dream for you is to some day have a minimum wage job."  The conversation was about minimum wage jobs not being the goal, but rather the stepping stone to a better job with better pay - people should strive to get out of the minimum wage jobs - not want them to be the best that they can do - with minimum wage, the employer can have more positions to offer ...

Minimum WageJan 23, 2015
I want to ask what would happen if the minimum wage changed to higher than it is. Would all these companies have to pay minimum wage? I know that when I asked about this from the head of the local (can't remember the title of the organization right now) that she said that they had to pay minimum wage. I have heard someone say that if they increased it to $16 an hour that people would be able to live on that. Can't remember who but he was a business expert, etc. Even if they don ...

Who Makes Minimum Wage?Oct 29, 2014
Who makes minimum wage? Apparently not just your average fast food worker. The average age of a minimum wage worker is 35, not the teenager the Republicans are so afraid will raise the cost of their hamburgers.  54% of minimum wage workers labor at a full time job.  Not the teenager who works for a couple of hours after school.  27% of minimum wage workers support children.  Well, I am not sure if that is the teenager working down at the fast food joint--that probably dep ...

Ah, Yes - That $15 Minimum Wage In Seattle.Jul 23, 2015
Liberals really should listen to conservatives, who have a much better handle on economic matters. 1.  Hardly anyone has gone off the public assistance rolls. 2.  Restaurant workers are losing the tip income they depended on, both because patrons know about the new wage, and don't feel obliged to tip, and also because some restaurants are adding a 15% surtax on the bill to cover their labor costs. 3.  People asking for LESS hours so they don't lose their welffare (!). ...

Are You Happy Making Minimum Wage?Feb 09, 2017
The Iowa Republican controlled state legislature is pushiing a bill to freeze the minimum wage at $7.25 and rescind local wage increases that have already been passed.  This should make the big MTSOs very happy.  How about you?   Do you think your work is only worth $7.25 a hour? I think these Republicans think that the only people making 7.25 an hour are burger flippers.   I know, there are MTs always willing to brag about their line counts, etc.  I know, however, th ...

Let's Clear Up The Minimum Wage NonsenseOct 27, 2014
By "clear up", I mean "to the extent possible".  I've spent two weeks "in the stacks", reviewing more than 2 dozen of the more recent economic analyses on the subject of the minimum wage, from sources that are considered reasonably objective.  For the most part, I focused on studies published by the NBER.  Of course, there's never any absolute assurance of objectivity, but peer review offers some reason to hope for it. They don't call economics "the dismal science" ...

Raising Minimum Wage To $15 An Hour? Dec 08, 2016
Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton wanted the minimum wage raised and that was part of their platform.  Does anyone think raising the minimum wage will help the economy?  My soon to be ex-company, Nuance, fired the California MTs because of minimum wage higher than average in California. Will other companies avoid high minimum wage requirements and avoid doing business in those states?  Do you think if the minimum wage is higher, costs to the consumers will be higher.  If ...

Minimum Wage In Major CitiesJul 11, 2015
I work for one of the large, low paying transcription companies. minimum wage increases in my city in July 1. Thanks! ...

One Of The Adaptive Responses To Minimum Wage IncreasesOct 28, 2014
Businesses don't just sit idly by when wages are pushed up by artificial means such as mandatory minimum wage increases.  They take one or more of a whole range of adaptive measures that are available to them to protect their profits - cutting staff, cutting the hours of staff, demanding more of existing staff, reducing non-wage benefits and investing in labor-saving automation.  What I didn't mention is that, from a purely fiscal "spreadsheet" standpoint, the greater the (a ...

We Warned You Minimum-wage-raisers What Would Happen.Nov 01, 2016
Just got the memo from my company with regard to parts of the country where they will not take employees - and they're either where the minimum wage has been raised (like Seattle) or states that impose other gargantuan regulations on small businesses. There will also be strict limits on how much people can work, and there will be no overtime. There have been a number of studies about the impact of mandatory increases in the minimum wage. It's impossible to summarize these studies, ...

Unions Now Want Exemption From Minimum Wage Hike They Pushed.May 28, 2015
wage doesn't cost jobs might want to have a chat with unions in Los Angeles. After pushing for a big hike in that city's minimum wage — which will climb to $15 an hour by 2020 — labor leaders now want an exemption for companies that have unionized workers. Why? Because, according to Rusty Hicks, head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, "with a collective bargaining agreement, a business owner and the employees negotiate an agreement that works for them both. The ag ...
