So will the Trump supporters be happy

Posted: Mar 14, 2017

Trump's infrastructure plan involves private investors building roads and then they can charge tolls to use them.  Wow, this stuff just keeps getting better and better.  Now we will have no insurance, dirty air/water and have to pay to use the roads.

;

We did it in Indiana. Trump is just giving infrastructure - building back to the states.

[ In Reply To ..]
You still have federal and state taxes on gasoline, right. This system is based on two fundamental principles: Federalism and the principle of benefits. Both come to us from the founders. President Eisenhower started this program because he learned as an officer that the US road system fell far short of the needs for logistical purposes in fighting a war, so he proposed that, since national defense was a federal — not state — function, a national trust would be created which would be entrusted to use gas taxes only for the purpose of an interstate highway system. It was to be based on gas taxes and tolls to conform with the principle of benefits as presented by Adam Smith in the Wealth of Nations published in 1776.

It no longer functions that way. It has become a congressional slush fund, in which almost half the money is ladled out through the corrupt system of congressional earmarks. The next time you drive on a highway which is named after a politician, think corruption.

Time to shut it down. The proceeds of the tax should be automatically remitted to state governments, or better yet, regional planning agencies. And regulatory barriers to privatization strategies should be repealed. We’re broke. We can no longer afford to be stupid.

Yep we did - anonie

[ In Reply To ..]
Okay another specific fund set aside for something like highways, etc. as well as our SS fund. All used by previous congresses to spend on earmarks.

Seems to me when someone figures out a way to do something, everyone jumps on how do we spend it.

It would not be spent and our SS and our infracture would not have been laid waste all these years if they had put in that it was only to go for those projects, not whatever these representatives and senators wanted for their states.

Give me a break. No wonder we are in debt and no wonder our roads are horrible and our senior help in our old age is nearly gone.

I say pay it back to SS and do this so as to keep the money in the states who have to fix all the infrastructure.

Since it won't be mandatory, a lot of people will CHOOSE - not to buy insurance.

[ In Reply To ..]
Subsidies are not insurance, it is welfare.

People are not forced to buy high price insurance with high deductibles that is unusable. Great I am “insured” but with deductibles I can’t use it.

And if people elect to not have coverage, then the number of uninsured goes up (duh)

Take away the mandate, leave the rest in place, open the free market to sell insurance in any of the states if they meet the Dept of Insurance regs in that state. Folks can make their own choices and the market will set the price.

Most of the 14 million are the young insureds with a gun to their head through the mandate. They are provided a choice. They can still choose to be insured and under the new plan they are further incentivized to insure with 25% more in tax credits than they had in subsidies and can pick a plan that more suits them. Bottom line not 1 person on medicaid thru Obamacare will lose insurance and everyone in the country even those with preexisting conditions has access to universal insurance at affordable rates. If they do not want it, that is their choice.

I think you'll find this article interesting. I love - this article because it depicts

[ In Reply To ..]
healthcare from its beginnings. There is such a thing as people addicted to going to the doctor. They refuse to be responsible for their own health and just keep going to the doctor. They want a magic pill, not a change in diet.

Providers must charge one price for a given service, and one price only - not varied according to who pays. This price must be known up front.

Allow competition at ALL levels (Big Pharma down to the Village GP) and prices will drop. Then no one will NEED insurance except for catastrophic care.

Make Big Pharma explain why the American Public is forced to foot the bill for R&D on new drugs, but foreign consumers don't. That's why the same drugs are much cheaper in Canada. Just like why people with insurance in the hospital have higher bills to pay for those who don't have it.

Since it won't be mandatory, virtually ALL 14 milliion will - CHOOSE not to buy it.

[ In Reply To ..]
That's where the 14 million comes from.

So back to the same old way of the rest of us - paying for them to use the

[ In Reply To ..]
ER for healthcare and we pay for it. Insurance will skyrocket like it did before (way more than now). This is all while many of us will be paying so much for healthcare that we won't be able to pay to use the road to get to the hospital anyway. Spin it however you want but the fact is there will be less people without healthcare in this country, not what Trump said he was going to do.

Healthcare and health insurance are not the same thing. - nm

[ In Reply To ..]

I didn't say healthcare and health - insurance are the same thing
[ In Reply To ..]
but, when people don't have health insurance, they use the ER for medical care. The hospitals charge us more to cover their loss, which gets charged to the health insurance companies, which makes our rates rise. My opinion, if you don't want health insurance then sign a paper where you will be thrown out on your butt if something happens. I don't mind helping people who truly can't afford it but just not to have it because you don't want it I don't want to pay for.
We have been unmoored from the constitution for - decades. Obama violated the
[ In Reply To ..]
constitution by ruling that it ‘is a tax’ then later admitted that it isn’t.

You cannot speak for 14 million people - Cite your proof

[ In Reply To ..]
MILLIONS proven to have lost their insurance BECAUSE OF OBAMACARE...I was one of them. Those stats available through HHS and well documented. Pick your source

A lot of these numbers are arbitrary. As a matter of fact, I went - all through life w/o any medical insurance,

[ In Reply To ..]
and that included raising 2 children mostly on my own. I had major medical insurance, but paid for office visits, etc. on my own. a total of three broken arms, one severely broken leg, two concussions, braces for one, measles and one case of chicken pox.

I negotiated and got 40-60% reduction for paying cash. The system is a mess now as you can see. I don't see it being fixed because there are just too many entitlements.

Today's health insurance scam has nothing to do with actual health care.

Get out if you can. Eat right, exercise, talk responsibility for your own health.

And how do people who can barely afford - rent and food

[ In Reply To ..]
pay cash for healthcare with things like broken bones or even doctor's visits?

While all of that sounds good, it is really not - possible now

[ In Reply To ..]
For example, prices back when you were raising your kids and could negotiate pricing was lower. My husband was born with diabetes and just one of his medications cost is $300.00 per month - how am I supposed to negotiate that? Broken bones at an urgent care or emergency room is going to be way out of the ballpark for most people, even with a payment plan or negotiating a better price. We all would like things to be like they used to be, but they are not and will not ever be again. The healthcare system is a mess, but I believe that it is that way because it is being managed by greedy business types who do not care about people. I have not had insurance for several years - I am lucky in that I am very healthy, but even with eating right, exercising, I am knocking on the door of 60 years old in a few months and even I know I am playing with fire.

You have NO WAY to know this and cannot speak - for millions of people

[ In Reply To ..]
No facts here at all...just opinion.

We paid a toll in New England growing up - when Carter was president - good idea

[ In Reply To ..]
The roads were better taken care of. If it could be done and nobody complained under a democrat, then it can be done and nobody should complain under a republican. Besides, if you don't want to pay a toll take a different route. Have no idea what you are talking about. Yes, we will have insurance, clean air/water and a fee not to use the roads, but to help pay for what is needed. If everyone pitches in a quarter or two to use the road it won't hurt the ol pocketbook. Those quarters add up pretty fast. Finally, a good idea.

Yeah, it does keep getting better and better.

That sounds kind of like the basis of - Obamacare

[ In Reply To ..]
Everybody pays in and it will eventually drive the pricing down. Too bad the pubs were too quick to want to dump it all right away. The basic idea makes sense, just like toll roads. Everybody pays to use it and it makes better care for everyone...

Not really - Person you replied to

[ In Reply To ..]
Nothing like Obamacare. Obamacare is making you pay for things you don't need. If I'm going from one area to another and I have to pay a toll, then that is something I need.

Two totally different things...apples to lima beans

Problem is, many young people cannot afford - the Obamacare premiums. Too

[ In Reply To ..]
bad the dems don't understand economics.

In order for Obamacare to work, young people have to buy extraordinarily high insurance for things that is mandates coverage for, that people don't want or need.

No it doesn't get better and - better

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been on toll roads and don't think they are any better than regular roads. Maybe they should use the taxes we pay for roads to use for roads instead of something else. Many won't have insurance, removing regulations won't make our air/water clean. If you think corporations are going to do those things without regulations, you are in a fantasy world. Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about because I do. Before regulations that forced corporations to be environmental friendly, they were destroying our planet.

I've been on toll roads and they are kept up wonderfully - All depends - nm

Newsflash for liberals: PUBLIC GOODS HAVE TO BE PAID FOR - ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

[ In Reply To ..]
For years, liberals have assumed that public goods - whether welfare, healthcare, education, infrastructure, regulations, younameit, are paid for by some mythical Daddy Warbucks.

If a bridge is built IT MUST BE PAID FOR, whether by taxes, by a toll, by government bonds or some other means.

Seriously, liberals, it's time for you to grow up and live in the real world. There is no Tinkerbell and there is no pixie dust.

The argument for a toll road is that it is paid for by those who use it. We've had toll roads in this country since the very first colonies were in existence.

Grow up, liberals...there is no Daddy Warbucks.

I have been paying taxes for - years

[ In Reply To ..]
Taxes for medicaide, medicare, gas taxes, taxes on property, education, infrastructure, sales tax, etc., and I've been paying premiums for insurance for years. So where did I say this stuff should be free?????

Just look at any discussion about public goods when it comes to - the discussion of cost.

[ In Reply To ..]
The original post begs the question of cost with regard to toll roads. THINGS HAVE TO BE PAID FOR ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!!!!

So I guess the response should have been: "If not toll roads, then taxes. Will you be happy with THAT?!!"

This isn't rocket science.
But it won't be toll roads or taxes, it will be - toll roads and taxes

News Flash. Here is your Daddy Warbucks - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Something as simple as our infrastructure should be funded by the taxes paid in every state. We can't afford that? Can't afford decent healthcare? Can't afford education? Can't afford feeding the poor? Can't afford clean water or environment? Can't afford renewable energy? You would think we are a very poor nation indeed. There are not entitlements per se but facts of life in the "real world."

Here is "growing up and living in the real world." We can afford wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, between $4 and $6 TRILLON, with no weapons of mass destruction, and no safer. Big oil companies subsidies of over $37 BILLION. Wall street bailout $12 TRILLON. F35 program of over $1 TRILLION. Not sure about the lost tax revenue due to offshoring but in the hundreds of BILLIONS. Same with the 1%'s tax breaks. These could be considered entitlements also by a different name.

No, we are not poor at all, not a specific party issue either, so you can grow up, live in the real world, and stop insulting Dems and Liberals and realize there are issues ALL people could agree on.

People in the east - Old and burned out

[ In Reply To ..]
are accustomed to paying tolls. Out west they are almost nonexistent. Historically, however, the tolls continue long after the project is paid for. The questions I would ask, since the republicans are all for deregulation, is - if the infrastructure repair is handed over to private companies will there be any regulation on the amount of profits? Will there be any regulation on who they must hire to do the work? Will alternate routes be maintained for those who cannot pay the tolls?

Also, what kind of regulations will there be - for the quality of materials

[ In Reply To ..]
they use for bridges/tunnels, etc. Are we going to have bridges caving in because the company used the cheapest materials possible in order to get the bid? Will the taxes I pay for roads go down since I will be paying tolls to use roads? Will the gas taxes go down for the portion that goes for road improvement?

I do realize all roads won't be toll roads yet the taxes we pay now are supposed to be for all roads. I'm willing to bet our taxes will go up and I'll be paying for driving on roads.
