Why has "conflict" (Jerry Springer type) TV become so pervasive?

Posted: Feb 18, 2017

They also call it "reality" TV, and as so often happens, reality is beginning to imitate art.

This morning I was interested in watching a program about people who buy houses, renovate and flip them.  What I got to watch was a very obviously ginned up, nasty, crude, continually vulgar fight among the different "partners" as to who would do what, what would be done, how it should be done, and virtually EVERY aspect of the renovation.  These "partners" were shoving each other, cussing each other, busting up the work that another one had done with a sledgehammer...and it was painfully obvious what the real so-called "appeal" of the show was intended to be.

We have shows with women in families that can't get along, shows with engaged couples who get into fistfights, you name it, we've got it, and I'm not just sick of it, I'm sick about it.  It's very hard these days to argue with anyone who believes that our society is sick, and to no small extent we have the entertainment industry to thank.

I think this is very deliberate destruction of our social fabric. - Snuffing out the "shining light on the hill.&

I don't recognize this place anymore.

Celebrity Apprentice was a catalyst - I quit watching TV

except for news and selected series on PBS or streaming video. It became very ugly when the Tea Partiers came out with their awful insulting signs and things really went downhill.

I have noticed the same in a myriad of shows. - anon

In your face vulgarity, needless sex and swearing that brings absolutely nothing to the integrity (not that there is any) to the show. That's the liberal way, unfortunately. There are few shows that I can stomach and those shows have been cancelled. Guess they didn't stoop low enough for the hegemony of viewers. Such shows are not funny, have no discernible point to them, do not educate, and the reality shows are all fake.

I don't care what anyone things/says, it is just a sign of our decaying society, gone down the toilet beginning with the destruction of the nuclear family.

Although Alinsky's plan was to pry children out of the family unit - I'm afraid we helped him a lot.

After World War II, the pendulum of American social values swung from those of wartime patriotism, altruism and sacrifice to one of undisguised materialism and selfishness; everyone wanted to make up for the privations of the war, and Madison Avenue went into high gear with ads, commercials, etc.

The outcome was a sharp rise in two-income families with both mom and dad not only working full time, but also having little or nothing left when they weren't working to give to their children in the way of parenting.

Since the late 50's, in particular, our children have been raising themselves, and if they turned out to be the product of unskilled labor we shouldn't wonder.

By the time Alinsky came along, there wasn't much left in the way of "nuclear family forces" to resist the pull of others in the child's life, including many the child never knew such as the executives in the entertainment industry who cared for nothing except peddling trash. Others, sadly, were people who were given authority and responsibility toward children such as teachers, who should never have been permitted within a mile of any child.

To no small extent, we did this to ourselves.

The Conflict On The CA VerdictJul 10, 2011
Let's say you were married, then divorced.  What if you and your ex shared custody of your young child.   Then say your ex did not return your child to you on the appropriate date.  He began telling you stories that would cause a "delay" in the child's return.  As time went on and you began pressing more and more to get your chiild back ,he then came up with more reasons why he could not return your child to you,  ALL of which were found to ...

Ben And Jerry's Ice Cream Threw Their Support Behind BLMOct 16, 2016
“Ben & Jerry’s went beyond making a statement in support of civil rights when they actively accused law enforcement of widespread racism,” Blue Lives Matter wrote. “By spreading these false and misleading statements, Ben & Jerry’s lends an appearance of legitimacy to the baseless claims that police officers are killing men based on the color of their skin. This message has inspired the assassination and attempted assassination of police officers, and it costs officers their lives.” ...

Has Anyone Seen This Type Of Dog Behavior?Oct 14, 2009
Our 10 year old golden retriever, Sam, has started grooming our 7 year old golden, Luke - with a vengeance!  He can literally lie there and lick Luke for up to an hour or two at a time.  Mind you, Luke doesn't mind.  He falls asleep.  Sam will like so hard and long that every once in awhile he will come up for air and just pant, out of breath, and then dive back in.  There does seem to be a rather compulsive component to it.  I'm a little surpris ...

What Type Of Bread Is Okay??Aug 19, 2012
Hi all, I'm trying to be healthy lately. I've lost 18 pounds just being good.  Part of my reason for wanting to be healthy is, besides my weight, high sugar (not diabetes yet) and high cholesterol. I stopped eating white bread. I thought I had it made with whole-grain bread, since I love it, but then I read here and other places that it's not good, particularly in terms of insulin production. I also know that wheat has morphed such that I almost may as well be eating white ...

Tech-type QuestionsJul 16, 2016
I posted earflier about how my local cable TV/internet/telephone company started blocking TV channels unless you rent a "box" from them.  I lost my temper and broke my bundle.  I cancelled TV and phone, ordered Direct TV, moved my phone # to a tracfone, and left internet intact because it's fast and high quality. It turns out that Direct TV couldn't get a "line of sight" to their satellite and so couldn't install.  I called Dish Network, and they're supposed t ...
