I think the first step is to talk to the hospital social worker--sm - anon

The hospital social worker likely knows what options are available for him and may be able to help you clarify what role you are willing to continue to play.

I am sorry you are going through this. You sound like a good person to take on so much. Please do talk to a social worker, or a patient advocate if available. After my mom's recent diagnosis with a terminal illness, her nurse got me in touch with our clinic's patient advocate, who arranged first home health services and then home hospice/palliative care. These people handle everything for us, including ensuring services/meds/equip are covered by her insurance. My mom also dislikes visitors to the home, so the visiting nurse & social worker limit their time with her and mainly speak with me. Best of luck to you and your brother.

My grandma's side of the family has a biannual family reunion and it's a pretty big party.  Every reunion a different families "hosts" the reunion.  Hosting generally means they pick a location for everyone to gather, book the facility and caterers, send out the newsletter, and contact local motels and campgrounds for special group rates, etc.  Then of course their in charge of the events at the dinner like giving prizes for who traveled the farthest, the oldest, the you ...

The Big Picture Regarding The Hobby Lobby DecisionJul 01, 2014
I think to a lot of people, the Supreme Court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case is largely about an overhaul of corporations' rights to control employees, basically a first step to more control over their lives.  Sure, it's about the birth control issue, but the "big picture" about the decision is this opening of the door to who knows what is next from big business?  The same people who are saying they don't want government to come between people and their doctor s ...

Paul Krugman: "Wall Street's Bad Investment Decision."Nov 07, 2012
There are many lists now circulating of the biggest winners and losers from the election; oddly, however, none of the lists I’ve seen mentions just how bad this result is for Wall Street’s Masters of the Universe. The story, as you may recall, is that the financial industry — having brought both itself and the rest of the world to the edge of disaster — was bailed out by taxpayers. Yet far from being grateful, top financial types were furious at Obama for occasionally hi ...

Obama's Manning Decision: Obama's Dangerous Move Reveals Scary Take On National SecurityJan 18, 2017
The commutation of Chelsea Manning’s prison term will forever be a blot on President Obama’s legacy. Just as the pardon granted Marc Rich by President Clinton on his last day in office became a totem of the odious pay-to-play money grubbing of Bill and Hillary, l’affaire Manning will be an enduring reminder of Obama’s constant pandering to special voter groups and mindless adherence to a progressive agenda. It will also stand as testimony to President Obama’s questionable fealty to ...

Hard Question To AskJan 29, 2010
This is such a hard question to ask but you guys seem to give great advice and I need some direction.   I have been married for 21 years with 4 kids but I am finding that I have changed so much and although I love my husband I am not in love with him and I would much prefer to just be left alone.  He can be verbally abusive even though if I ever said that he would never believe it.  He does not see what others see.  I have reached a point where I just don' ...

MTs Going Through Hard TimesAug 25, 2010
Sometimes, when I read posts about MTs going through hard times (many of us these days), I think about inviting one of them to stay in my home for perhaps a year in order to get a little ahead.  I live alone in a rural area and have a lovely home.  There's not much to do here, but it's pleasant enough, and the cost of living is reasonable.  I've been through a few rough patches myself, but I'm with a pretty stable company now and am enjoying my work.  I ...
