Are those "Obamacare saved my life" stories

Posted: Jan 19, 2017

As soon as Republicans took the first steps toward repealing ObamaCare, stories started popping up all over about how ObamaCare "saved my life." CNN ran an Op-Ed called "ObamaCare saved my life. What now?" and Salon one titled "ObamaCare saved my dad's life — and then he voted for Donald Trump." Another reported on how a "Sedona cancer survivor tells Paul Ryan: 'ObamaCare saved my life'." Huffington Post had a piece about how "ObamaCare Saved My Mom's Life." The list of such stories grows by the day. They all tell the same tale. Someone got insurance because of ObamaCare, got treated for a disease, and didn't die. The stories are meant to build support for keeping ObamaCare in place now that Republicans have the chance to repeal it. Get rid of ObamaCare and people will perish, is the implicit message. Were these folks actually saved by ObamaCare? It's possible. You can't spend a trillion dollars subsidizing insurance without helping someone. Of course, lots of Americans who had health problems managed to live before President Obama signed that bill into law, even if they didn't have insurance. So it's hard to say with any real certainty what would have happened. But the relevant question isn't: "Did ObamaCare help some people?" The relevant question is: "Could the same benefits have been achieved at lower costs? It's the cost side of the equation that all these happy ObamaCare tales ignore. And when it comes to ObamaCare, these costs are fantastic. They're measured in the trillion dollars in taxpayer subsidies, unprecedented premium increases, massive insurance industry losses, reduced choices as insurance companies bail, extremely limited provider networks and high deductibles. For millions who were happy with their coverage before 2014, ObamaCare has made them much worse off. But ObamaCare's costs don't end there. The law also included massive amounts of new regulations on health care providers, insurers, on businesses and on individuals. These costs are harder to measure. The American Action Forum took a look at the impact of all this on small businesses, and reported its grim findings on Wednesday. What the AAF found is that ObamaCare has killed about 300,000 jobs at small businesses, resulted in $19 billion in lost wages, and forced more than 10,000 small businesses to close their doors. "Premium increases, a prospect regulators predicted when issuing the first ACA regulations, also significantly diminished the number of business establishments and jobs nationwide," the report said. The AAF analysis also notes that just complying with ObamaCare's mountain of regulations has cost more than $53 billion and required more than 176 million hours dealing with paperwork. If you think the AAF is not in the mainstream, consider the fact that the Congressional Budget Office reports that repealing ObamaCare will accelerate economic growth, which means that ObamaCare is currently slowing the economy. Those costs are just as real as the benefits being touted in those feel-good stories, even if there isn't a website devoted to testimonials about how "ObamaCare killed my job." Did ObamaCare help some people? No doubt. Are there a better, cheaper, more competitive, less intrusive ways to expand insurance coverage by making it more affordable?" Given ObamaCare's enormous price tag, the disruptions it's caused, the false promises made to get it enacted, the market implosion it sparked, and the ongoing lack of public support, the answer to that question is also a definitive "Yes." ;

There are many more Obamacare bankrupted me - stories there. For every million

people coerced to buy insurance they don’t need, don’t want, and can’t afford, there are bound to be a couple of people helped.

Law of large numbers. In a country of 320,000,000 it is impossible to enact legislation, no matter how bad, that harms tens of millions of people, without accidentally helping a couple of dozen or so.

That’s why I hate to see Democrats using individuals as props and pawns, a sample size of 1 is pretty stupid.

Actually, bankruptcies because of medical bills are way down! - nm

You won't either because that doesn't fit the narrative. BO admin. - claims 20 million more Americans

have health care due to Obamacare. But that is based on six years of survey data, not actual sign-ups. The reality is that when you look at the actual net gains over the past two years since the program was fully implemented, the number is 14 million, and of that, 11.8 million (84 percent) were people given the “gift” of Medicaid.

And new research shows that even fewer people will be left without insurance after the repeal of Obamacare. Numbers are still being crunched, but between statistics released by the Congressional Budget Office and one of the infamous architects of Obamacare, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Jonathan Gruber, it’s estimated that anywhere from 2 to 7 million people now on Medicaid would have qualified for the program even without Obamacare.

That further discredits the administration’s claim of 20 million more Americans having health insurance because of Obamacare.

I'm sure also that the stories of all the people who are forced - to buy substandard coverage

[ In Reply To ..]
because the cost of healthcare insurance has gone up due to the government subsidies and who don’t qualify for subsidies themselves will never be told.

What do you consider substandard coverage? nm - oldtimer

My husband and I previously had excellent health insurance. - We no longer have that since ACA

[ In Reply To ..]
was enacted. We had to buy a plan that was substandard to what we had. It was the only one we could afford. The deductibles are outrageous.
Good point., and insurance is not healthcare. - Insurance with deductibles and co-pays
[ In Reply To ..]
so high you can’t afford to use it is useless for general healthcare.

In the case of a catastrophic injury however, insurance can be a blessing. That is what insurance was originally anyway. Major medical.

The extra money I have to spend on Obamacare mandicated - insurance was going into my retirement plan.

Before Obamacare I had planned to save between 10 and 15K in the last few years of working, but Obamacare has stolen it from me. This change puts me at risk my later years in life by government employees that make decisions based upon race or a superior’s whims. Many of us resent it. We don't have a voice.

Obamacare Is Failing From Behind... His Goals For ObamacareJul 20, 2016
1) Have it collapse so that single payer can be implemented amidst the ensuing chaos. 2) Have that happen on somebody else’s watch. Obamacare was designed to fail so the Democrats could “reform” it with complete government provided socialized medicine. That is the entire purpose for it. Obamacare is designed to collapse so they can backfill the vacuum with government run socialized medicine. Eventually, everyone will be on some form of Medicare. I believe that was one of Bernie’ ...

7 Stories Obama Doesn't Want ToldNov 30, 2009
John F. Harris John F. Harris – Mon Nov 30, 5:45 am ET Presidential politics is about storytelling. Presented with a vivid storyline, voters naturally tend to fit every new event or piece of information into a picture that is already neatly framed in their minds. No one understands this better than Barack Obama and his team, who won the 2008 election in part because they were better storytellers than the opposition. The pro-Obama narrative featured an almost mysti ...
