I think Italy has it right. They impose a period of media silence

Posted: Dec 3, 2016

The campaigning is done now ahead of Sunday's vote.

No more campaign ads.  No phony polls being published.  No robocalls.  No news editorials, articles, radio or TV commentary.

And on election day, no exit polls, early predictions, etc.  When the vote is counted and certified, the results are announced.

Gee - a period of silence in which people can reflect on their vote without the deluge of frantic last-minute yelling, screaming, misinformation, the blizzard of ads etc that we have to endure leading up to election day.

What an idea!

I'd really welcome that here - but I'd make it 7 days instead of 2.

It is out of fashion today, but earlier in the 20th century there - was a field of study called

General Semantics which aimed at getting to Truth without getting waylaid by bad thinking. Of course it went out of fashion.

The problem is the fact that the MSM has become a wing of a political party, not the reporter of the news.

If the government control every aspect of private enterprise and the personal lives of humans, it's called fascism. Of course, since you said Italy I'm assuming you mean the govt does this.

I agree. Also here is my idea for elections - sm

No voting machines (they can be hacked).

Everyone that votes must register. Just like we did growing up. When you walked in to vote you went up to a person and proved who you are. They looked at their books, found your name under your address and checked you off. There are many ways of proving you are who you are and you live at an address (utility bill). Then you get a voting sheet (and only one sheet).

The voting ballot: One sheet of paper, divided in half. On each halves you have a picture of the candidate. You have a red or blue banner underneath their name. You have their name in huge letters (for seeing impaired). You have the word Democrat or Republican in big letters too. Then you have a big box next to their name. Use pens people can "X", check, fill in or whatever they want to do. This way nobody can claim they didn't know what they look like, which party they belong to and there are no "hanging chads".

Next, after the person comes out of the voting booth where they vote in private with their paper folded in half walk up to a box and drop it in. Also the cities now how many people live in their city. If you have towns and cities with 10,000 eligible voters yet an additional 60,000 votes show up, those get thrown out.

At the boxes you have an equal number of democrats and an equal number of republicans. At the end of the day these paper ballots get counted and marked on a board for everyone involved in the counting process to see. This way there are no hundred of fake ballots inserted.

On another note, there needs to be penalties for the people who are cheating. The mentality that I have seen this year with only my vote counts and not yours is so disrespectful. Maybe if they get caught cheating they get their voting rights taken away. Rights is not even the correct word. It should be a privilege to vote, not a "right". Take my 27 year old special needs niece. She's into Barbie dolls and any type of dolls. She has the "right" to vote. She will vote for anyone who will give her free Barbies. We all know the stunts that politicians will do to get votes. So her vote determines the fate of hard working people? I'm all for people's rights, but sometimes people need to use some good ol common sense.

I still think paper ballot, picture, name, party, and color (blue/red) with a huge box. Count them up fair and square and the next day we find out who won.

Don't know how it's done where you...SM - Old Anon

live, but that's how it's done in my small city in RI, except for the picture, color (blue/red), and the huge box to check. The box is big enough as it is. If someone needs assistance (visually impaired, language barrier, etc.), they are allowed to have someone of their own choosing to help them in the voting station/booth OR they can ask for an impartial poll worker to assist them. We have pretty strict poll laws here and a poll monitor official is conspicuously present to oversee things. If you see anything untoward happening at your polling place there is a posting of who to call and report to and/or you can report directly to the poll monitor who is present.

I'd be interested to know how others' polls are set up and what rules are in place to affect a transparent/fair voting experience.

That may be done where you are, but that's not everywhere - Person you replied to

I stated a way where cheating could be avoided. Sorry if you don't like it. Was just an idea I've had for a long time. No place in this country is it done this way. So you are telling me that you have a sheet of paper, no machines, half the sheet has the picture of the candidate the party they belong to and a huge box to check? Um, okay, yeah, whatever.

No, I agreed with your ideas...SM - Old Anon

Where did I say I didn't like it? Yes indeed, in RI we have a paper ballot which we take to a station that affords us privacy and fill it in. The words Democrat and Republican are in large type with the names of the candidates underneath, but there is no red or blue color and we DO NOT have pictures of the candidates on it. Those ballots would be very expensive to print. The boxes to check next to the name are big enough for anyone to see and fill in. We also had the Green Party and the Libertarian Party on our ballot this year. We then carry our ballot to a sealed ballot box and feed it into the machine. It is not a voting machine, just a receptacle for holding the filled in ballots that no one can tamper with until it is unlocked for the ballot count. Lots of places in this country have similar voting systems and have done away with "voting machines". We've been using this system for at least 10 years now. I'm sure there are many other places that use a similar system. What's not to like.

Odd PeriodMay 12, 2012
I hope someone has some advice.  My period is ususally 3-5 days early.  This month, it was 11 days late and so far (day 2), it's not really a period, it's more like a brown mucousy discharge. Just read about a woman who was to run the London marathon. The night before she started her period. She thought she could either wear a tampon or go without, to do so because she claims there is "period shaming." She went without. I saw a picture of her after the race with her blood soaked pants. I have no idea what othe ...
