US healthcare tab hits $3.2 trillion, fastest growth in 8 years.

Posted: Dec 3, 2016

grew at the fastest rate in eight years in 2015, driven by the coverage expansion in President Barack Obama’s law and by costly prescription drugs, the government said Friday. The growth of 5.8 percent in 2015 boosted total health care spending to $3.2 trillion. That’s an average of $9,990 per person, although the vast share of that money is spent caring for the sickest patients.... ;

Drug spending is the same racket as college tuition - hike - the prices and the govt (taxpayers)

will blindly cover it.

Healthcare spending more than anything else has been busting the federal budget for the past 30+ years. We can’t afford it anymore. Somebody has to address this from a practical/factual point of view, not emotional. Your children and grandchildren are going to be paying the price.

Give people more choice, that's always the answer. - Pre-tax contributions (HSA) and

[ In Reply To ..]
they don't have to be spent in the year you contribute, they are put into an account that accumulates, can grow with investment - like a retirement fund, and there should be no taxes on the investment income into the account, the money can be used without penalty to pay for facility care.

The money can be taken out, without penalty, to pay for additional health insurance.

The money can be given as inheritance into the health care accounts of beneficiaries.

Giving people more - choice

is not the answer. LOL on the spending account. The problem is the healthcare providers raping the people and insurance companies having to pay for it. This has been the problem for a long time. Look at your medical bills and see what they charge. My husband cut his finger, went to the ER. They put stitches in and put a splint and wrapped it with gauze and charged for 2 surgeries at $300 apiece. I will even excuse them calling putting a few stitches in as a surgery but wrapping gauze on was not a surgery but that is what it is coded as. $300 dollars to put gauze and a splint on, and they charged $75 for the splint separately. This is why health insurance is so high and has nothing to do with Obamacare.

"Nearly 10 million had Medicaid coverage as result of the law" - There are 13 million people on Medi-Cal

(Medicaid) in the state of California alone.

"The report was disappointing news for the outgoing Obama administration..."

Many of us saw this coming. When the government is involved it is only a question of how little service you can give in return for how much money. There is no market to set prices because there are no market transactions between buyers and sellers.

Repeal and replace with:

Pre-Existing conditions compensated for and put in their own pool.

The ability to shop across state lines for health insurance to get the best deal. The Free Market Rocks!

Healthcare slush funds that any and ALL can contribute to via our paychecks.

Catastrophic care plans for those of us that live our lives outdoors, are healthy, but could still get cancer or be kicked in the head by the cow. Other than that, we can pay our own way,

Thank You!

they could have included a provision to negotiate prices with the drug companies but, as a concession to these greedy, money-grubbing companies, and probably because they contributed to the lawmakers campaigns, they did not. One provision in national health care in other countries is negotiated drug prices.

More people have coverage - H2o

[ In Reply To ..]
That is because more people have coverage who did not have coverage before, so of course more $$ is being spent. If it saves lives I am happy for people who otherwise may die.

Also, if your premiums are higher, then your state's governor did not take advantage of the Federal grants offered by ACA, then you will pay more. It was your Governor's stand that increased your premiums. If he refused the funds, you are stuck. Not ACA's fault.

As for premiums, here is a link.

Healthcare's Bipartisan Problem. Almost Half Of Healthcare SpendingJan 13, 2017
healthiest half of the population consumes only 3% of health care costs. The only alternative would appear to be taxpayer subsidies. It is next to impossible, politically, to take away freebees once in place. Income redistribution continues to increase. The 2010 health law, also known as Obamacare, forced insurers to sell coverage to anyone, at the same price, regardless of their risk of incurring big claims. That provision was popular. Not so were rules requiring nearly everyone to have ins ...

Obama Job GrowthOct 06, 2014
"What’s now clear is that the Obama administration policies have outperformed the Reagan administration policies for job creation and unemployment reduction. Even though Reagan had the benefit of a growing Boomer class to ignite economic growth, while Obama has been forced to deal with a retiring workforce developing special needs. During the eight years preceding Obama there was a net reduction in jobs in America. We now are rapidly moving toward higher, sustainable jobs growth." ...

That Job-growth Crushing ObamacareNov 12, 2015
We know, for example, that in 2014 – the first full year of ACA implementation – the job market in the United States had its best year since the late 1990s. Indeed, hiring in 2014 was so strong, it surpassed literally any single year in either Bush presidency, and even many of the years in the Clinton era. Postscript: I’d be remiss if I neglected to note that new jobs are being created in the health-care industry at an extraordinary pace. The industry added more ...
