Advice about neighbor trying to be helpful

Posted: Sep 20, 2016

I am looking for a way to let him know that I am very grateful for his help, but having that kind of noise around is distracting while I am working.  I have actually told him this before, but I am not sure he understood that I meant for all time.  To top it off, when he's mowing he makes my dogs bark, and of course that is worse than the mowing itself.  I usually try to mow before he has a chance to get to it, but with all the rain we've had it is hard to do.  I work for a company where I am paid by the line and am supposed to get so much done or I get in trouble, and I am already struggling in that area.

The poor guy is obviously doing it because he wants to feel good about helping someone out, so don't tell him not to do it. Give him the satisfaction of doing a good deed.

His mowing can't last too long. Even if you have a huge yard, he would only be near your office/work area for a short period of time. Take a break during that time, do some housekeeping, work on dinner, check emails, run errands, etc.

My advice would be to keep a good attitude about the fact that you are getting free yard work done and find a way for both he and you to get some enjoyment out of the situation.

I totally agree. I wish I had someone to mow and do yard work! Try to do as much as you can to isolate yourself from the noise by closing everything up and turning up your volume...

Noise-reducing headset. - Know what you mean. sm

My bro tries to help me out on his weekends. My office/basement window is at ground level, so no escaping the noise. I bought an over-ear noise-reducing headset for this purpose, which makes it tolerable. If that is not acceptable, you could somehow use the excuse that you are worried your dogs' toys and/or messes will damage his mower. That's what my neighbor used when another neighbor mowed the lawn because she thought it was too long (it wasn't, she's just a fussbucket).

...what the problem is exactly based on what you stated. It seems that it shouldn't be a problem telling it like it is, which is that you do APPRECIATE the neighbor's kindness towards you, yet you don't want him mowing (a specific activity) because it just makes too much noise and you have a job where you have to be able to listen to audio. You could then suggest another kind of specific activity in which you'd like to have done instead and, again, express your APPRECIATION for how nice he is towards you. And that activity which you need to get done would make him feel useful AND would, in fact, truly be useful to you. IMO, there's no need to beat around the bush.

If he lives right next door, it's possible he wants the lawn to look even with his. If that's not the case, then I would thank him profusely, but unfortunately, you get penalized on the job if you can't hear through your headset...from there, I would blame the dogs! Those darn dogs bark when the lawn is being mowed, and I can't get any work done!

If he's the type to help a damsel in distress, I would suggest another "favor" he could do for you, like weeding or sweeping the driveway.

Good luck, that's a tough one!

You could try a noise-cancelling/reducing headset.

Not really seeing the problem - here

Surely he is not mowing all day, every day. How long can it take to mow your lawn once a week or so? Do you really want to discourage someone who wants to mow your lawn for you?

If he doesn't do it, you'd have to pay someone to do it or do it yourself. If you pay someone to do it, that's still going to make noise, and it is not likely you can dictate the time it is done. If you have to do it yourself, that is time and effort you could be spending on paying work or something fun.

Turn up the volume for the 20 minutes it takes someone to do you the kindness of mowing your lawn and try to be thankful for your good fortune.

Neighbor's Barking DogSep 21, 2011
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle a neighbor's barking dog?  This is a hound dog who barks incessantly all day long at the house kitty corner to ours.  I've left a note at the residence about this and have called animal control when it continued, and he is still at it.  I've tried closing up my house and running white noise in my office, but nothing seems to drown him out.  It seems talking to them would be pointless at this juncture as they hav ...

Vent About My NeighborSep 23, 2010
Okay, so I have a neighbor who is unemployed.  I know this cos he and his other half are always having screaming shouting matches and she yells he doesn't work and doesn't contribute, doesn't drive, eats her food, smokes, won't even watch "her kid", blah, blah, blah. So..what does he do?  He goes and gets himself a motorcycle.  So he has no license to drive it and it sits there in the yard (not their parking area, but their back yard that faces our back yard) a ...

Getting Frustrated With NeighborJun 30, 2011
I have one grandchild who for the first 3 years of his little life lived too far away for me to visit regularly.  Now, my son and family live about 6 hours away and I get the grandson one week every other month and it's been great.  I've got a whole room set up, a little backyard kiddie pool, jungle gym, treehouse, the whole thing!  (DH is a hobby man and made so much himself!) Anyway, my neighbor has her grandson quite often and has let me know it is because she does n ...

My 7 Yo, A Dog And A Buttinski NeighborMay 20, 2011
My 7 yo was outside last evening playing with 2 other children in the cul-de-sac when a lady walking a dog passed.  My 7 yo approached the lady and asked permission to pet the animal, which was granted, but while petting it\'s shoulder the animal\'s head swung around hitting my girl in the eye.  She has a small scratch and a bruise under the eye. Everyone around made a huge fuss about it.  A neighbor called our apt security rep who came and talked to us.  A buttins ...

Barking Dog And NeighborFeb 22, 2014
Ok.  Here's the story.  We have a Golden whom we named Luke Skybarker, and he has lived up to his name in every sense.  He will be 12 next month. Five years ago the house next door went up for sale.  I was already well aware of Luke's proclivities and when the house was being shown when I was outside I would make mention of this fact for the prospective buyers to take into consideration (no, they old neighbor didn't move out because of him.  She died.) &n ...

Problem With NeighborJun 21, 2014
I'm starting to have a problem with my neighbor. We live in a community of little cottages that are very close together. The decks of the individual cottages are actually joined, so there is really only a few feet between our back door and their back door. They just had a baby, and the other day, he came over and was complaining to my husband about his smoke coming in their window. We are not supposed to smoke inside the unit, and when we moved in, the property manager said that eve ...

NEIGHBOR ISSUESAug 22, 2015
There are 3 families with young children who live next to me.  My children are grown and gone.  All of the children like to come to my house, probably because I don't have to discipline them, I'm like a grandmother. Anyway, I will label them family A, B and C.  Family A is no longer allowed to play with family B or C - long story. I enjoy having all of the children at my house - I miss having children around.  I have never had this problem before and I'm not ...

My Neighbor's Yard Is A Mess!!Nov 10, 2009
We live sort of in the country on a cul-de-sac gravel road.  All of the houses are less than 5 years old and sit on 1-1/2 to 3 acre lots.  It is beautfil in here with all the big hardwood trees and nice big yards.  Everyone keeps their yards mowed and clean EXCEPT of course the one next door to me.  Our lot is 1-1/2 acres and his is 3 acres.  He mows a strip down where our property lines meet and on the other side of his yard where the property line meets the other neigh ...

How Do You Deal With A Neighbor That Has No Regard For AnyoneJul 16, 2011
How would you deal with a neighbor in a townhouse semidetached type neighborhood who has no regard for anyone at all and they just take over everything.  They burn a firepit every night with skids which they shouldnt be and smoke goes in everyones house and ashes all over the cars.  They used to have their dog out in other yards and the kids just everywhere doing whatever.  They live like they own everything around them.  We did put up a fence and that helped some of this but ...

I Am The Worst Neighbor In The WorldApr 13, 2010
If I could buy a cabin in the Rocky Mountains on 40 acres of land, I would.  Except I can't. I live in apartments because that is my only financial option (long story, lots of people have a similar one), so I really should try to accept my situation and live a happy life.  Except I just want things the way I want things and I believe since I've been single and working from home since 1997, I have become a hermit crab and like it enough I am not motivated to change. My downs ...

So, My Highly Intrusive Neighbor...Oct 09, 2012
She is nosey, in everyone's business and exceptionally bossy.  I had thrown away a basket and came home from vacation to a very long voicemail about how she had found the basket, retrieved it and gave it to another neighbor.  She then berrated me REPEATEDLY about throwing away things that other people can use, and informed me that she is European (no kidding) and Europeans do not throw beautiful things away. I have no idea how she figured out it was my basket to begin with, but a ...

Halloween Traditions/my Neighbor Told Me I'm Going ToOct 16, 2009
This is kind of a double post so I didn't take up board space!   FIRST:  I have a new neighbor and we had introduced herself when she moved in and we were all friendly.  I recently decorated for H-ween.  Nothing too much just a big lighted up pumpkin, an inflatable ghost, and a couple of those wind socks on the porch. Anyway yesterday her and a couple of her church girlfriends came over and knocked on my door.  I answered all polite and then she told me that H ...

Loud Cars/Inconsiderate NeighborOct 22, 2014
I know there is nothing anyone can do about the problem, but please allow me to just vent.  I live in a neighborhood where the homes are very close together.  It's not the greatest area in town, but it works for me.  Everyone on the block is quiet, and there is usually no trouble at all.  However, the one family across the street consists of a dad (who seems really nice), his daughter and his son.  The children are grown and have jobs, but still living at home.  ...

Going On A Trip, Next Door Neighbor Talk WithApr 20, 2015
leave my house key with her just in case. I have animals here at home and my husband is home like every other day as far as the watering and feeding things. She and I basically share "her" cat. She lets him be an inside/outside wanderer and he comes to my house and gets treats. I have talked with her occasionally over the years, never visited in her home, she has been in mine once. She is a part-time RN in NICU here at one of our close by hospitals so pretty responsible. I would love to be a ...

New Neighbor Brought Unwanted PestsMay 09, 2017
I am currently saving up for moving, but it has been rough with my income not being enough to cover moving costs. What can be done temporarily to eliminate and keep roaches out of the work computer until I can get moved? I am in no position financially to replace my work computer right now. My new neighbor moved in about two months ago and since a few days after they moved in I have been seeing roaches at my house. I had previously had no problem and have been living here for 10 y ...

Advice PleaseMar 22, 2011
I was bored and decided to tamper with my hair (my favorite fashion accessory).  I spent the weekend bringing it from a deep mahogany to platinum.  Damage was minimal considering it was an at-home job with my husband I the "colorists," lol! I know with this new hair color change I need to amp up the makeup so as not to look faded out.  I've dug out a few of my "bolder" colored lipsticks instead of the nude lip I usually used as a brunette, but was wondering if any other blon ...

AdviceMar 22, 2011
Hi all, I just needed a little advice.  My sister called me last night and asked me to watch my 2yo niece while she and her husband and her 13yo daughter went on a cruise in June.  I told her that I couldnt because the 3 days that she wants me to watch her are days that I work.  Keep in mind, I have a 13yo, a 4yo, and a 16mo myself which I work at home with and it is difficult.  I just dont think that people get how hard it is even though Im at home.  Anyway, so I told ...

Need Some AdviceDec 11, 2009
Good morning...I need some advice and at this point any advice is welcome :-)  I have a 5 year old energetic, funny, sweet little boy who is in kindergarten.  I just had a short meeting with his teacher yesterday who said that she is having some real issues with my son in class.  She says that he is very disruptive and acts silly all day.  She says that he is not mean by any means and is very sweet, but he just simply will not concentrate on the task at hand but would rather ...

Need AdviceJan 15, 2010
I've been living with a guy for 12 years. There are some aspects of his personality/behavior that are positive. However, he has a habit of mocking me at just about every opportunity, belittling, that kind of stuff. When I get upset he says he "was being funny." He likes to contradict me in public when possible and point out negatives - not so much about me specifically but demeaning comments about things like my dog or my hobbies, etc. I ask him to please not do these things in public but i ...

Need Advice - What Would You Do?Jan 19, 2010
I need advice on what you would do in my situation.  I'm so upset about it and my husband says not to do anything and basically dismissing it.  I'll try to make this as short as possible.  My family has been best friends with another family for about ten years.  They're just like family. We do everything together.  This past weekend their 16 year old daughter stayed over because she had a track meet and the rest of the family was going away for the lo ...

Need Some Advice On What To DoAug 27, 2011
I wanted to see if anyone has some advice on what to do on a situation I am having with my ex-husband's girlfriend. This past Monday morning my apartment complex called me and told me that they received a fax the evening before that I wanted to be treated for bedbugs! I told them that I didn't send a fax and didn't have bedbugs, and asked her what number the fax came from. She wouldn't tell me. She then asked me why I didn't leave my phone number on the fax only my addre ...

Ok, here goes.... My husband drives a truck.  When he comes in his dad (who is divorced and lives with his mother who is in her 80s and I guess you would say has no life) comes over.  Well, no problem there except he don't know when to leave.  LOL  He comes around 10 or 11 am and stays until 10 or 11 pm.  Then the next day he is back again unless he is working and then he comes after work.  I don't mind him coming to visit every day when my husband is in ...

MIL AdviceOct 25, 2010
Our family was planning a trip to Disney World this summer and then I decided that maybe we should go to California (where we are from) and go to Disneyland, that way grandparents can come.  Since then, my MIL has taken it upon herself to plan out ourentire vacation, starting with trying to make our motel reservations on the drive there and ending with making them on the way back.  If she were just being nice, it would be completely different, but really, she is just being controlling. ...

I'll try not to make this too long, but I have an 18-year-old, soon to be 19-year-old son who just told me a couple months ago that he is gay.  I was shocked, but not totally, as I had suspicions before because he never really showed much interest in girls.  Anyway, I told him I love him no matter what and that did not matter to me.  it took me a couple months to get over the heartache of it, though.  His dad doesn't know yet, nor his younger brother, as I told him ...

Need Some AdviceJul 18, 2011
I am having some issues with my boyfriend.  He has not been working for a while now and I have been paying rent/bills/groceries all on my own.  No big deal, it has to be done, but what I am having a problem with is his bi-weekly "allowance".  He needs his own money to spend, and I understand that, but no matter how much money I tell him I am going to give him, it is never enough.  He is never happy with what I give him (usually a couple hundred dollars).  I never sp ...
