Seriously questioning if a president even has any real power

Posted: Aug 31, 2016

starting to think it is all just a farce.  our president right now has no power, so what is to say anyone will have it.  until a complete changeover happens in the senate and congress, nothing will change.  if Trump gets in, he will conform to Ryan and McConnell, if HC gets in, they will fight her every step of the way like now.  it seems to me people want T because they do not agree with Ryan and McConnell et al, yet that is what we will end up with, you can see it already, the conforming, the changing of positions.  'deals' - what a joke, it is congress all the way suiting themselves.

it also seems people do not hate President Obama, they hate what he represents.  it was a big mistake making it personal against him - it is against 'us'

so really, what will change.  T will get richer and we will all get poorer, HC will be completely shut down.  what is the point.  until people get smarter and start voting in these so-called 'smaller' elections, nothing will change.  are we all being hoodwinked to think the president even matters... ?

Executive branch has been increasingly encroaching onto legislative - turf since at least FDR...

[ In Reply To ..]
...reaching a zenith with Obama. Constitutionally, governmental power and authority is supposed to be distributed among the 3 branches. In practical terms, though, there has always been a power struggle among them.

Anyone who thinks the Presidency doesn't have power today hasn't been paying very close attention to the most recent occupant of the White House. He has assumed powers far beyond his predecessors, taking advantage of first the majorities of his own party in Congress and then the weakness of the GOP when they took over Congress. Only the Supreme Court has stood in his way (on a number of occasions), and that was before the death of Antonin Scalia.

Obama going around Congress consistently. What good are - they? They are supposed to represent us.

[ In Reply To ..]
The last scam is the "global warming" treaty.

that is because of the stranglehold by congress and the senate - UnluckyMT

[ In Reply To ..]
that is my point, the presidents will be reduced to executive power. should a president who was voted for by the majority of the people sit back and do nothing because of the refusal of anyone to do work with him -

President Obama won by majority yet congress (minority) rules.

I suppose if it was flipped, you would be all for that though, right? executive orders from the hard fringe right would be so much better, which is what any president T would have to do. only he will just do what congress wants.

I was under the impression the majority of T's followers are against the do-nothing congress.

I'm sitting here shaking my head as I read this. Are you serious? - The president isn't more important than the

[ In Reply To ..]
legislative branch.

Imagine Trump was the president and bypassed a Democrat Congress by executive order based on what you just said.

We are doomed.

The President is the executive, not a farce but - Yep - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It's not a farce. What, do you think you're electing a dictator? Or someone who can like a dictator and pass their own laws arbitrarily?

The main job of the office is to execute and enforce the laws that Congress creates. When he doesn't do that, or tries to create his own laws through executive orders (pen and phone) there's a problem. Of course, now that the precedent has been set, the next President will likely continue further down the same path.

The "Congress doesn't like me, so I'm going to do whatever I want" clause isn't in the Constitution. It doesn't matter how people feel about transgender bathrooms, income inequality, or the deportation of people living here illegally. The law is the law, as set forth by Congress.

No other choice most times - Readyforchange

[ In Reply To ..]
I think he had no choice in a lot of cases because the Republican run Congress has stymied many things that came through Just because they refused to let him get his way or because they wanted to remove things that did not suit the Republican party ideals even if it was a good bill for America. I don't like that Obama used executive order for many thing,s but I do feel that he had no choice on some of them. I am ready for a change, but I am sorry, Donald Trump cannot be that change - as the above poster said, he has already started changing to conform to what the same old crusty Republicans want. Still wish there was a better option than Him or Her though.

Don't ignore your own biases. We all have them. - Yep - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Unfortunately, "what's good for America" depends on your perspective, your ideology, and your opinion. The Founders knew that one person (the President) deciding what is good for America was a very bad idea. Making excuses (as the media has done) for a President that chooses to go that route is also a bad idea.

The fact that Obama had "no choice" but to use executive orders and other methods to bypass Congress is evidence of him subverting the will of the people.

I'm not going to address his ideology, right or wrong, but I feel this is why he's a bad President. He couldn't work with or negotiate with Congress. Other Democratic presidents had to deal with Congressional Republican majorities. Republican presidents have to deal with Congressional Democratic majorities. Previous presidents managed to negotiate or realize they need to stop.

The dynamic that led us to Trump vs. Hillary IS very interesting. An interesting question, to me at least, why don't we have a better option?

Wow. Do you even realize what you're saying? - This is not how the American government works.

[ In Reply To ..]
Each branch of government was given specific authority and prerogatives, and the system of checks and balances was established to ensure that no branch of government usurps the powers of the others.

Congress has the authority and the responsibility to pass laws, using its own judgment as to which laws should be passed, and what specific form those laws should take.

THIS IS NOT WITHIN THE PURVIEW OF THE PRESIDENT!

Dear God, do you not even realize that you're describing a dictatorship? Of course you cast this in the light of a "beneficent" dictator to try to sell your unconstitutional notions, but it's a dictatorship nonetheless.

No one individual was granted the power to decide "what is good" for this country. The American system was specifically set up to resist such a vile and dangerous notion because we had already been dealing with a despotic monarchy, and a monarch arising in America was THE ONE THING that the founding fathers feared the most. Our system is expressly established to prevent such an evil from occurring.
Calm down - Readyforchange
[ In Reply To ..]
I am not saying it was right, but I am able to see why he felt he needed to. The Republicans made a concerted effort to block everything that might have helped the middle class just because they didn't like him. I am not even saying I like him - he is not even in my top 30 list of favorite presidents. I am just pointing out that from practically the beginning of the 2nd term the Republicans made it clear that they were not going to work with him at all (like when the government shut down). It seems I remember a couple of the old codgers posturing on the news stating that they would not re-open until they got their way from Obama. I think everyone in the government should be fired and banned from DC and we can start over with some rational people who don't use playground tactics to run our country!
"I'm not saying it was right, but..." You can stop right there. - And I will NOT calm down when
[ In Reply To ..]
...Americans who should have learned better all the way back in junior high school exhibit such abysmal lack of understanding about the nature of our government, the reasons that strict limits were placed on the powers of each branch of government, etc.

I have seen this excuse before and it is VERY DANGEROUS.

Incidentally, liberals like to call this Congress the "do-nothing" Congress yet it passed more bills than the Democrat-controlled Congress before it.

I do wish EVERYONE who wishes to participate in the political discourse would take the trouble to know what they are talking about.
Right - it has been OBAMA who has been the - obstructionist and who has refused
[ In Reply To ..]
...to work with Congress.

Interestingly, and I think revealing, is that he refused to work even with the Democratically controlled Congress except with regard to a few of his own pet issues like Obamacare.

From the very beginning, Obama set himself up as a dictator.
where do you get that from, a dictator - just had to laugh - UnluckyMT
[ In Reply To ..]
a dictator because he would not be controlled by congress? It was either 100% their way or no way, and they chose no way, hurting the entire country with that mentality.

he was elected by majority, remember? the majority wants the things he has been trying to accomplish.

majority is supposed to rule in a democracy. he has done and tried to do what he was elected to do. if he had not, he would be negligent, like the congress is because they refuse to do, well, anything to help us.

If Trump was president and a Democrat controlled - Congress "stymied" him so Trump

[ In Reply To ..]
used executive privilege, will you still feel the same? This is NOT how our system works. Congress is elected just like the present. In fact, the Senate used to be appointed by the states, not elected.

This is what happened to Rome. They stopped being a - republic and became a dictatorship complete

[ In Reply To ..]
with a Cesar.

Obama is Emperor Nero. Rome is burning and Nero just married Pythagoras.

Nowadays the 1% hold the real power. The - President is just a figurehead.

[ In Reply To ..]
They shake a lotta hands, go to events, give speeches about what corporate heads tell them to speak about.

We are becoming a monstrous dishonest Orwellian - bureaucracy that re-writes rules

[ In Reply To ..]
retroactively. Hard to have much enthusiasm anymore.

Obama is 100% globalist, like the EU. You can't have - three branches of govt in order to achieve that.

[ In Reply To ..]
He's been usurping power from Congress and the MSM thinks it's great. Party first. Goodbye rule of law.

The Power To Say NO Is Huge.Nov 01, 2010
As few as 41 senators, which could represent as little as 12.3% of the U.S. population, can make a filibuster happen.  The Republicans have been using the filibuster continually, even filibustering bills they previously were FOR, just because they believe it makes Dems look bad.  The Republicans currently have 41 senators and block everything.  The Democrats have 57 senators, so by the rules they cannot override the Republican obstructionism.   ...
