the Republican Party of being out of touch with “post-Christian America,” warning the GOP that if it doesn’t renege on its alliance with Christianity, it will soon become irrelevant. Ted Cruz’s failure to get the GOP nomination, Matthew Sheffield proclaims in Salon, “is a perfect window into trends that will set the pace of American politics for decades to come: Americans are moving away from Christianity, including people most likely to vote Republican.” To back up his claims, Sheffield cites the 2014 Pew Research study finding that 23 percent of Americans say they’re “unaffiliated” with any religious tradition, up from 20 percent just three years earlier. The trend away from religion, and Christianity in particular, Sheffield argues, is the real cause of Republicans’ woes and their failure to win the last two elections. breitbart;

Or, if you prefer, simply Google terms like "liberals claim Christian", "liberal Christianity" etc. to find many articles from the left claiming that Jesus was liberal, Christianity is a liberal philosophy, conservative positions are un-Christian, etc.
The article below is long, but even if you skim it you'll run across some interesting facts - such as that in the last midterm election of 2014, 40% of the voters who said they attend church every week voted Democrat. I don't see anything in the Salon article suggesting that the Democrats should jettison those voters, do you?
So, one liberal author argues that the GOP should reject the influence of Christianity on the party, while another encourages the Democrats to embrace (or exploit?) the Christian voter.
Seemingly contradictory, in fact they are oddly complementary, these articles. One envisions a river of Christians flowing out of the GOP tent, having been rejected by the party in order to "preserve relevance". They then would find shelter and sympathy in the Democrats' tent, who welcome them for no real reason that this particular author suggests other the obvious one - to get their votes.
We might be forgiven for reaching cynical conclusions, but let's remember that each of these authors is undertaking to sweep the Aegean stables in 10,000 words or less. What is immediately clear, first, is that neither one of them understands what Christianity is, or what true Christian faith entails in terms of the political aspects of social life for believers.
Christianity is a religious faith, and religious faiths ought not be confused with social institutions like the National Rifle Association, the Daughters of the American Revolution or the NAACP.
Nor are Christians a "voting block" or even a "special interest group." To view them in these superficial terms is to profoundly misunderstand the very nature of religious faith, much less Christianity and even Christ Himself. It is to misunderstand that The Christian Church is not the same thing as Christian churches, Christian denominations, Christian church-goers or even all of these taken together. The Christian Church is what God sees, not the bricks and mortar of sanctuaries nor the people who fill them.

If you want to know what happens when a society turns from God just read Romans 1:18-32. That’s exactly what Paul is addressing. After you read it compare what Paul says with what’s been happening in the United States since, say, the 1960’s. It’s like Paul wrote it yesterday.
