Question about internet service providers

Posted: Jul 9, 2016

Last night I was watching TV when I discovered that my half my channels no longer worked.  I have bundled service (internet, land-line phone, and cable TV), so I called my ISP, and they told me that they have a "new and improved" system now (sounds like Nuance, huh?) and I would now have to rent a box for each TV in my house in order to restore my fave channels.

Um, no thanks. I'm not under contract, so I'm going to cancel my service and find alternatives.  BTW, I've left MT, and don't anticipate EVER returning, so I can get satellite if I like it.

Here's my question:  Can I take my phone number with me?  I've had it for 16 years and don't want a new one.  Phone numbers aren't the "property" of the ISP, are they?

;

I answered my own question! - Shoulda researched it before asking

I had the same thing happen with my cable company. Spanning a period of about a month, groups of channels kept getting blocked out until eventually I had none. Cable company informed us they went "digital" and we would have to purchase/rent a box from them in order to get them back.

No thank you! I dug out my antennas from the "old" days and now get 20 channels on each TV. I hooked a laptop up to the main TV and I can watch shows I like from various links I find online. Problem solved!

how do i hook up laptop? - loveTV

If you see this, I have a smart TV (3yo old). How do I hook up my laptop to use the TV as the screen?

Thanks!

All you should need is an HDMI cord - sm

I picked up a 25-foot cord from Amazon for about $13 a couple of years ago :)

My ISP said, just like yours, that they had gone "digital." When I got to work today, everybody was up in arms over their maneuver to force people to rent a box for each TV. I promptly broke my bundle, cancelled cable TV, ordered Direct TV, and "ported" my home land-line number to a $15.00 Tracfone. The only thing I couldn't cancel was my actual internet service, since no other provider is available. I did tell the ISP to reduce my service to the lowest speed possible (don't do MT anymore so don't care), and that'll save quite a bit.

Oh...Yes, I understand now that groups of channels will continue to be blocked until none can be accessed without a box. I hope the city tells them to stick it.

Wanting To Change Internet Service, Looking For AdviceJan 08, 2013
I was wondering if anyone here has U-verse with AT&T and if so have you had any problems with it. My internet provider keeps going up, and down and up and this month it is $20 more than last month for what reason? I have satellite television and like that now- used to have years ago and it was not that good so with the Uverse they also offer satellite at a reasonable rate to start. Any thoughts? ...

Christmas ServiceDec 25, 2013
I just wanted to share this with everyone as I think it is so awesome. My church had a Christmas Eve service last night. We sang carols, the old ones. Now my church is small and our choir during the year has at best 20 members. A lot of people came in for the holidays to spend with their families and some of them joined our choir for the service which raised it up to about 30 members, more or less. Well the main hymn, anthem or whatever was the Halleuia (?) chorus from Handel's messiah ...

Has Anyone Here Used A Check-printing Service? Jul 18, 2014
I recently started helping an elderly friend keep up with his bills. He has no computer and prefers mailing checks. It will cost almost $50 bucks for a refill packet of, I believe, 150 checks from his bank. Has anyone used a check-printing service that charges less? I have seen ads for these services but since they will get his bank acct info, I am being extremely careful. Check-printing software is a thought, but I tend to waste a lot of ink and paper getting printing jobs right. Any other idea ...
