Is an admin assistant course worth it?

Posted: Jun 30, 2016

I am considering taking an administrative assistant course. It costs almost $4000 and is supposed to touch upon office procedures, medical billing (not in depth), EMR, conflict resolution, among other useful subjects. This is cheaper than my community college and can be done at my own pace, within reason, from home. I need to get out of my almost min-wage MT job, but having been an MT for 25+ years, my non-MT skills are lacking. Completion of such a course seems to have multiple paths, in and out of home. Trying to decide if it is worth spending that kind of money at my age (53). Opinions, please. ;

go for it - I would

It would round out your other skills that you say are lacking. Whether you go into that work or not, you need the skills if you decide it's truly time to leave MT work. Other than the medical info you'd gain, the office skills can be taken to just about any job. You're not too old, either. Just saying. :)

my thoughts on course - radmt

I too am always looking and perusing job ads. I find the admin assistant ads want to experience.

Instead of spending 4k, look into high school night courses in each modality. I've never looked at the course schedule to see if they offer the particular skills.

Worth a shot.

My community college has office-type classes for much less, including paralegal studies. Can you get a job and try moving up? If you are in California, look at Cal.gov and sign up for testing. Other states are probably similar. But beware the big bucks for-profits such as Boston Reed (now called something else). I am still angry that I handed those jerks $3K for a phlebotomy course, for nothing. I was the real jerk.

I don't think it is worth it - sm

A lot of office procedures can be broken down into knowing computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), operating business machines (FAX, phones, copier, etc.), formatting business documents, and having basic common sense. Other specialized knowledge is often particular to the office in which you are working, so you have to be trained by each employer in that case anyway. If the course you're considering claims to provide instruction on medical billing "not in depth," you can probably become just as familiar with that level of knowledge by being exposed to it in a medical office.

You might try going through a temporary agency. Lots of them provide free software training at their office. In the meantime, you can work temp assignments. This will provide experience and get you comfortable in the office environment. It's also beneficial for both you and the client in terms of trying each other out for size. Lots of people get permanent positions like this.

Whatever you decide, I hope you find yourself in a wonderful work situation as quickly as possible.

Like that idea - did it

A temp agency is a great idea. It does give training and could land you a permanent job.

Thanks for the responses. - Trying to decide. sm

As usual, responses that are encouraging and informative. Thank you! Looks like I have some more investigating to do before making a final decision.

The Obama administration is withholding from Congress details about how $1.3 billion in U.S. taxpayer funds was delivered to Iran, according to conversations with lawmakers, who told the Washington Free Beacon that the administration is now stonewalling an official inquiry into the matter. Obama Admin. Hit For Giving Egypt $250M Mar 05, 2013
In part: The Obama administration is facing criticism for giving $250 million in aid to Egypt while saying the recent sequester has forced drastic cutbacks elsewhere in the budget -- including forcing the release of "low-priority" illegal immigrants from jail. "With sequestration forcing our nation to face billions of dollars in cuts across the government, it is unfathomable that the administration would send funds unconditionally to the Muslim Brotherhood-led government," Republican Rep. ...

health care law is failing and his administration will go to seemingly any length to prop it up. You know the famous quote from “Animal Farm” that “all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others?” This was George Orwell’s attempt to point out the hypocrisy that many politicians preach equality, but then give favors to only a few. Well, for the Obama administration, it turns out that the health insurance companies participating in Obamacare happen to be “mo ...
