Tinnitus after DC'ing caffeine

Posted: May 11, 2016

I've been trying to eat healthier and am feeling a little better. I have been "tapering" so to speak off caffeine. The tinnitus started a couple of days after decreasing my daily amount. I have not had any caffeine at all in the past two days and the tinnitus today is so loud I have had to stop working. Has anyone else experienced this? I tried to call my doctor's office to make an appointment, but I couldn't hear them. I am going in the morning to see if I can get a walk-in appointment.

Caffeine is a stimulant. Stimulants constrict blood vessels. This opens airway passages. When you DC caffeine, the nasal passages tend to swell up making you feel stuffy. This stuffiness can lead to tinnitus, I do believe. The stuffiness/headache and all that accompanies caffeine withdrawal should pass in time. This is my best guess if they caffeine reduction and tinnitus is cause and effect; otherwise, it could be coincidence. Best wishes with the tinnitus. You might try DayQuil or something like it to see if that helps. It helps me with my tinnitus sometimes. The doctor told me my tinnitus was caused from hearing loss, but it gets much better when my allergies are not so bad, and I also hear much better when my allergies are not so bad. Best wishes.

Thank you - Desta

I haven't felt stuffy yet. The tinnitus is worse this morning. Getting ready to leave and see if they can get me in before my appointment. I may try the DayQuil and see if he'll do a referral if he can't help me.

Hmmm... I have mild chronic allergies, and - always have tinnitus. I wonder if -

the poster above is right about the allergy thing? At first I thought it was because my ear canals were blocked with cerumen, but after having them cleaned out at the doctor's, I still have tinnitus. At least I'm used to it by now, so it seems "normal". ;)

My doctor gave me a referral for ENT. He said not to punish myself and to go ahead and have a small cup of coffee a day just until my appointment to see if that helps the tinnitus enough that I can work since I am on my own as far as income. He also recommended OTC lipoflavonoid, which I have now.

There is a commercial on TV about lipoflavenoids helping with tinnitus. Thanks for sharing that your doctor recommended it. Now I'll give it a try.

Question: If you open your mouth all the way, does it change the tinnitus? Mine gets much higher in tone. This makes me wonder if there are surgical options to control it. I have not seen a doctor for this yet but will share when I do. Thanks for sharing and please let us know if you are helped by the lipoflavenoid. Good luck.

Strange. It does - Desta

In the right ear it gets lower in pitch and in the left ear it gets really high pitched. It sounds like a chorus of frogs and cicadas very close all around me when I do that. Very odd you should mention that. It has been uncomfortable and I never slowed down to notice before.

So far, nothing noticeable with lipoflavonoids, but too early to tell much. I will update after a few days or if I notice something different.

I would like to hear an update on you as well. Good luck to you.

makes it almost go completely away. I also have the high pitched sound with the opened mouth but both ears are high pitched. This must mean something if physical positioning can change the symptoms and makes me wonder if there would be a surgical cure for this.

Thanks for sharing and I will definitely post after a see a doctor for this.

Tinnitus is now gone with lipoflavonoid and just one cup of coffee a day. Still another month until the ENT can get me in, but I am at least able to work again.

FANTASTIC! - Linda

Desta, I'm so happy to hear it worked for you! I'll buy some lipoflavonoid right away and get started on it. Thanks for getting back to us on the lipoflavonoid. Hope now have great hearing for many years to come!

Does anyone else suffer from tinnitus? Mine is a high-pitched, constant noise in my ears.  It is worse in my left ear than my right.  Some days it isn't that bad, but some days (like today) it is very loud and is driving me nuts! I have an aunt who has Meniere's disease, and have heard that can run in families, but I do not have the associated vertigo that Meniere's has, just the constant noise. If you have tinnitus, what have you found that helps?  I'm sure ...

I have this ongoing now for four days.  I do not notice it when I am busy but when I go to bed at night, it is very annoying.  I have tried an ear wax removal kit and it did not provide any relief.  Anyone know of a home rememdy?  Thanks in advance! ...
