Question about tithing.

Posted: May 1, 2016

First off, this post is not for atheists. I am 100% sincere in my search for an answer.

I was recently told that my prayers would be better received and answered if I tithed 10% of my income in the name of the Lord. My problem with that is that I don't belong to a church.

Any advice? Thank you and God bless.

I am a degreed seminarian and I can say that God cannot be bought. His "Favor" cannot be bought. Works (thinks you do) will not earn you the Kingdom of heaven. All of that is nonbiblical and bogus. Just cast all you worries to him in prayer have faith in Christ and lean on Him. For it is by Christ you have been saved not works (or money). Don't listen to what men say in certain churches, listen to what God says in proper context in Scripture. Get yourself a good Bible-teaching (in context) friend or church and your questions will be answered as I have answered yours today. You are in my prayers.

There is no Biblical proof of tithing being a - Christian requirement

in the Bible. The Israelites were commanded to tithe, but after Jesus'death God "erased the handwritten document that consisted of decrees" (Colossians 2:14). So, the law was abolished and no command to tithe can be found in the Bible to the Christian congregation. Contributions are strictly voluntary.

Tithing, I have found is essential in the Christian life. You are giving back a portion of what already belongs to God which he has blessed you with. Joining with a church is also essential in the Christian life, as we are told to be in fellowship with other believers. Prayer is also essential, God answers always at the right time, which might not be in our timing, so join with a Bible believing group of believers, a church, tithe, and pray, then you will be amazed at how God works in your life.

It's a church requirement to tithe. Donating to whatever religious organization you belong to will help support it. If a church tells me my prayers won't be answered unless I give them money, my time and money won't be spent with them.

For me, I believe tithing was for another era. I give what I can after my bills are paid. No church, just do some good deeds every day.

I was always raised and told by my pastor that 10% does not always mean money. it is works of service, i.e. doing something nice or kind for someone, paying it forward. I believe in order for the church to maintain itself the congregation has to give. If you can get in a good bible based church that would be great. If you choose not to go to church, that is okay too. As long as you walk in the ways of God. You could give money to a homeless shelter or buy food for it. Give money to a children's home or give them clothes. There are many ways to pay it forward. pay for the person behind you in line at the coffee shop. Hope this helps.

I am Doctor of Ministry of the largest Christian University in the country and it is taught in our doctoral course that we are to live the Gospel. This means church is not Sunday, a ritual, or a go to Sunday and sit there club. We are the church by loving God and each other and the oppressed. We are to give to others especially the hungry. Tithing to a church is not biblical nor is the prosperity Gospel. The New Commandment is to love God, love others, love the world. This means everybody including nonChristians, every sexual orientation, every gender, every background, race, etcetera. We are especially asked to give to the needy and poor and hurting. This is the tithe. We are to as small groups live the Gospel as Jesus did. The trend of the old fashioned church on Sunday is unhealthy and the mega church highly consumeristic (let me go watch the show and praise and worship and tithe and be a consumer) then ignore the needy, or be nasty during the week or even on the church steps. That's unhealthy. We are the church to those who believe and those who do not believe we are to love and do good. Period. This is the Way Christ lived. The only thing which He spoke against loudly were the Pharisees, those who were the legalistic ones who went to services, asked for money, etc. and judged the sinners. Only He is to judge. WE are to LOVE. That's what seminary is teaching and there is a trend to reverse the unhealthy traditionalistic and consumeristic church and go back to the original way of love. You give to Him when you give to the least of these.

Do you pay tithing?  How do you feel about it?  Do you have any faith-building stories to share regarding tithing? Once again, this question is not intended to start any arguments - only a discussion.  I like to share beliefs, feeling, insights, etc.  Can we do that without getting into a nasty, mud-slinging fest? I hope so.  :) ...

Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
