Oh, Crud

Posted: Apr 23, 2016

Okay, so I did something dumb. I sent a credit card through the washer and dryer (cool water in washer, warm dryer). It looks just fine--not warped or anything, but I'm wondering if I damaged anything in the chip or on the strip. It was not still in the pocket in which I washed it, but not sure how long it was out of the pocket. I didn't open the dryer till the cycle was done. Has anyone had this happen on recent credit cards? Just wondering how it worked out for you. ;

if it is damaged, etc., but I bet you can call and get a new one. I'm sure this has happened to lots of people before.

Easy to find out if it's damaged. - sm

Just go to the gas station and try to use it. This kind of purchase requires advance approval, so you'll know without even buying anything whether it still works or not.

If the gas purchase is approved, you'll get the message to select the grade, etc. You could pump a gallon or two, or if you don't want to buy even a gallon of gas with the card, just go into the station and ask the clerk to cancel your purchase.

Why worry about it? - xx

You are more likely to get an actionable answer from your credit card company than from a bunch of random people on the internet. Just call your credit card company and tell them what happened and ask them whether you need a new one. The is unlikely to be the first time this has happened to someone, so they will be able to advise you whether you need to get a new card. Since you will be talking to the people who can issue your new card, you'll be able to arrange for a new card while you're on the phone with them and have it in no time.

Problem solved.

Thanks All! - From OP

Thanks for the responses!

I was just wondering if this happened to anyone, before I have to find out the hard way, either at the pump or by being on hold for who knows how log with the credit card company.

Anyway, if this has happened to someone, I'm still curious!
