Will universal health care raise our taxes?

Posted: Feb 6, 2016

I see people cringe when Sanders says he will raise taxes so he can get his healthcare system in place. I would welcome a tax increase if it means we do not have to pay insane insurance premiums. I look at it this way, if my family has to pay $1,000 or even $3,000 more in taxes but then we get our healthcare free of charge. We just saved $3,500 to $4,000 over all. I will take 3 grand more in taxes if it means I do not have to spend 7 grand that same year in insurance and medical costs. People need to see past the hysteria of new taxes to find out what it all means in the long run.

Of course nothing is free in this world - you pay for everything one way or another

not only will you pay for "free" healthcare but you will pay for "free" college and whatever else Bernie is proposing for "free".

Did you read my post? Bernie is not saying anything is free. - sm

No FREE college - Hmmm?

No Bernie just wants to redistribute the wealth. Bernie is a wannabe Robin Hood.
Do you call high school "free"? Nothing is free. nm - VTMT

No more taxes! Geez, typical Democrat! - Wake up!

We already pay the Obamacare TAX! Yes, TAX! Any subsidies you may have received-you have to claim on your TAXES! How soon you forget the Obama promise of saving an average of $1500 a YEAR, everybody's premiums will go DOWN. Geezus Christmas, wake the heck up! It never happened! I have no insurance, none, after 40 years of working. I can not afford insurance. Politicians need to go after the INSURANCE COMPANIES!!!! Not, the taxpayers! I am shaking my head at what I would assume, yes assume, is an MT who has probably not had a raise in 20 years, embrace taxing herself $3000 a year? What am I missing? "See past the hysteria of new taxes to find out what it means in the long run?" Nancy Pelosi? Those of us who can't afford the "Affordable Care Act" know what it means in the long run. And, by the way, why is Bernie or Hillary even mentioning healthcare at all? 100% of Democrats in Congress INCLUDING Bernie Sanders voted for it-because it was so damn great for us peons.

Politicians need to go after insurance companies? - Dream on

Insurance companies are some of the biggest contributors to politicians. Obamacare was a gift to insurance companies. Wonder how much money he got from health insurance interests. The political system is corrupt. Politicians are looking out for special interests who fund them. They don't care about you or me or how their laws affect the voters. They only care the money keeps coming in from special interests who the laws they make protect them.

The people with the money make the rules. Never forget that.

It was never intended to be the end all, just a beginning. Now - sm

we need to put health insurance companies that make huge profits while denying care out of business. I would gladly pay a 2.2% of my wages as a tax and have full health care with no more private premiums, no deductible and no copay. This MT makes about $28,000 a year, so my health insurance tax would be $616 a year. I won't even tell you what I pay now!!!

Another thing about free healthcare that nobody talks about - the reimbursement to facilities from the governmen

[ In Reply To ..]
The facility charges you x-amount of dollars for your stay/treatment. They submit the bill to medicare/medicaid/free health care and the government reimburses only a percentage of the bill so the facility only gets part of your bill reimbursed by the government - they have to suck up the rest of the bill. Consequently, in order to stay open, the facility will either stop treating patients with medicare/medicaid/free health insurance (unless you pay cash) or they increase their charges so that ultimately they get enough to pay their bills so those who do have insurance or pay cash will now have to pay more for those services. Some will say that the doctors already make too much money - but remember, this also affects the little 30 bed hospitals in rural areas, the doctors who are doctors in rural areas where they don't have the option of raising their rates - so ultimately the whole health care system suffers. Most facilities can survive now because of private health insurance paying the bill, but if everyone is on medicare/medicaid/free health care, alot of those facilities may have to close leaving us without health care or having to travel 100 miles to find a place that will still accept medicare/medicaid/free health care.

You need to remember that with...sm - oldtimer

the present system we have insurance companies in the middle making huge profits and sucking us dry with their huge premiums, a lot of which are subsidized by our taxes.

The whole system will readjust - maybe a Tylenol won't bill at $6

We Need Universal Health Care.Jun 23, 2017
I know Obamacare needs some fixes--at least it was a step in the right direction.  I am still doing reports where people are in the acute care hospital setting because they did not take their maintenance medications for hypertension and diabetes, etc. I do not know why they let their Medicaid lapse, but they are in crisis. How much does a prescription for BP meds cost versus the hospital stay + rehab for stoke patients? How much does insulin and blood testing cost versus blindness, ampu ...

Flip-flop: Lieberman Promised 'universal Health Care' In 2006Oct 29, 2009
Political watchdogs and supporters of the public health care option are accusing Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman of hypocrisy for announcing he plans to filibuster the Senate health care reform bill after years of voicing support for health care reform. Since Lieberman's announcement on Tuesday that he would not stop a Republican filibuster of health reform if that health reform included a public option, bloggers have been scrambling to post videos of Lieberman advocating health care ref ...

Health Care Reform-Question About Canadian Health CareDec 03, 2009
So....a friend is for our US health care reform (already retired and on Medicare) because he had no trouble going to Canada to get laser surgery on his eyes so he wouldn't have to wear glasses and states there is nothing wrong with the Canadian system....but, and I'm asking a serious question here, how long do people really wait for emergent surgery if they belong to the Canadian system versus the American system as we have it now? How did Canada get their health care system up and ru ...

None Of Bernie's Proposals Will Raise Taxes For Average....smJan 25, 2016
Americans, except for the health care bill. I don't know many people who make more than $200,000 a year. So consider that 2.2% income tax alongside what comes out of your paycheck for your employer's health insurance and what an average visit to the doctor's office costs (and then imagine what it costs for x-rays and surgery and things of that nature, and heaven forbid you have a medical emergency). Is 2.2% really that high? I've been told Briton pays 10%. The top 2% of Amer ...

Bill Kristol Thinks Republicans Should Be Willing To Raise Taxes.Nov 12, 2012
rint Bill Kristol thinks Republicans should be willing to raise taxes. It’s not the first time. By Suzy Khimm , Updated: November 11, 2012 John Boehner suggested last week that Republicans would be open to compromise on taxes — so long as tax rates don’t go up. Now Obamabomination Care Is Going To Raise YourMar 12, 2013
Okay, so it's been clear from day 1 that the idiots who put together Obamacare had absolutely no idea what they were doing - or the many unintended consequences that are already surfacing - among them: 1.  No, you can't keep your physician. 2.  No, the cost of healthcare isn't going down; it's skyrocketing. 3.  The preexisting condition insurance plan already has had to be shut down.  Announced today they can't accept any new patients.  135,00 ...

Get A Raise? Employer-paid Health Insurance? Retirement Plan?Feb 17, 2011
I am horrified at what is happening in Wisconsin and many other states.  There has been a systemic effort to take away our rights and this is just the latest. If you are a working medical transcriptionist you know only too well about the cuts to wages and benefits.  The corporate policies (using political influence) have offshored work, cut wages and benefits, driven workers into unemployment, so that the remaining workers will  grasp at any reduced wages and benefits that might ...

Health Insurers' Fast Food Holdings Raise FlagApr 16, 2010
(CBS)  The investments of large insurers of health, disability and long term care in fast food chains like McDonald's and Pizza Hut have raised the interest of a study in the American Journal of Public Health, reports CBS Radio News' John Hartge. The Harvard Medical School's Dr. Wesley Boyd, an author of the study, finds it ironic that these firms would invest nearly $2 billion in companies that sell food often linked to obesity and cardiovascular disease. Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

The Top 10 Stupid Things Said About Health CareOct 15, 2009
By Ken Kupchik Stupid things are always said in politics, whether it's to curry favor with ill-informed constituents, or because a politician is a missing filter between his brain and mouth. Based on the level of discourse during the recent health care debate, it appears that the far right possessed the lion's share of stupid comments. Here is the cream of the crap: 10) Sarah Palin temporarily came out of book-writing reclusion to claim that a health-care overhaul would create "dea ...

Judge Rules Out Health Care LawDec 13, 2010
This is good news.  Now if politicians could just make health care affordable for all.  I'd love the same rates as someone in Idaho or other states have.  Make health insurance competitive, they have to accept pre-existing conditions and nobody could ever be refused health care and I think that would be a great way for a new year.  But forcing people to buy a product they don't want is just not right and I'm glad this judge saw how unconstitutional it is. &nbs ...
