Obamacare question

Posted: Jan 23, 2016

Can someone help me understand how to do my taxes with regard to this program? I didn't have insurance last year (decided to squander the $$ on food) and I can't for the life of me understand the instructions. I either owe 50 cents or a quarter-million. Can some kind soul save my sanity? TIA anon

A broke MT earning around less than $12,000 per year would qualify for free health insurance. If less than $30,000 a year, quite a reduced premium. You could earn all the way up to $47,000 and still qualify for a subsidy. Different states have different options.

Any of those options would be better than having no insurance and having to pay a fine of $325.

Open enrollment for next year goes until Jan 31st, I believe. Check out this site.

and

https://www.healthcare.gov/fees/fee-for-not-being-covered/#2015

There is an option regarding employers who offer expensive insurance, but you really would need to talk to an ACA representative to find out your individual options. I would caution against calling an advertised number on TV or elsewhere as it looks to me like a lot of places are pulling "bait and switch" scams.

If your choice is between health insurance or some other necessity, I would check into a local food shelf and or help through SNAP. There is an energy assistance program that helps with utility bills/heating costs in winter. Seek these out if you need the help.

I also did not have insurance last year by choice. I did make less than 30,000 last year, but did not qualify for the ACA subsidy because I had insurance available through my employer. The insurance is about 100 a month for catastrophic coverage. I weighed the costs and thought 325 is less to pay than 1200 for something I cannot even use. Anyway don't they just take the fine out of your refund and if no refund, they still cannot force you to pay? I found the answer to my question from your helpful link. They can only take the fine from your now or future tax refunds, no criminal penalties or liens. I will just keep going with the cheapest option, you gotta keep food on the table and a roof over your head. I do get assistance from the state for my utilities and phone and I don't own a cellphone.

To the OP, I use HR Block online tax preparation (free) and my state has a free online site also. Last year, the HR Block figured the fine for me and it was all done. It was kind of annoying how many questions I had to answer about not having insurance, but in the end, no problems. Hope this helps.

I wish they would get rid of the employer insurance loophole - sm

I think all the plans on the exchange must provide health maintenance for free. That includes annual exams, Paps, mammograms, scheduled colonoscopies, etc.

I hope you still have some community health organization in your area where you can get low cost/free care. I know I don't know what I would do with my chronic bronchitis flaring this winter and my husband's terrible infection/cellulitis in his hand.

In regards to the employer insurance, I think you can refuse your employers insurance and buy off the exchange, but you lose your subsidy option. There is also some way of figuring out the cost of employer insurance as a percentage of your income that might help some qualify. That is why it is always best to actually talk to someone from the exchange so you can weigh all your options.

I Have A Question Regarding ObamaCareOct 09, 2013
I do not understand why in the world some American citizens think it is okay that some get exemptions or favors regarding ObamaCare.  I don't get it.  I thought ALL laws passed in our great country were to be abided by, by all, not just a few, while the select ones do not have to abide by that law????  Makes no sense to me at all.  I do not agree with ObamaCare for reasons I will not state here, as this post would be forever long.  However, even if I did think Obama ...

Obamacare Question Nov 17, 2014
I don't know if this is the correct spot to post, but here's the hypothetical question: If someone loses their job (and health insurance) and becomes an IC after obamacare open enrollment closes in February, would they still be able to enroll in obamacare (say in March or April), or would the only option for health insurance be COBRA? TYIA. (This is hyopthetical right now, but might become a reality for me if I can't turn around my financial situation. If the answer is ...

Question For Obamacare Opponents And Jun 19, 2013
Yesterday the House GOP held their 43rd SYMBOLIC vote to repeal Obamacare.  Since their swearing in as the majority House party Jan 3, 2011, as of May 15, 2013, the GOP had taken a measley 281 votes out of the 897 days that have transpired since then. Anyway, as of May 15, 2013, 43 of those votes have been to repeal Obamacare.  Not sure if this one is number 44 or if I missed a few between May 15 and now.   That's a full 15% of their time spent on these useless "shout outs" ...

Obamacare Meltdown Has Arrived. Tennessee Is Ground Zero For Obamacare'sOct 07, 2016
last month the state insurance commissioner, Julie Mix McPeak, approved premium increases of up to 62% in a bid to save the exchange set up under the Affordable Care Act. “I would characterize the exchange market in Tennessee as very near collapse,” she said. Obamacare Is Failing From Behind... His Goals For ObamacareJul 20, 2016
1) Have it collapse so that single payer can be implemented amidst the ensuing chaos. 2) Have that happen on somebody else’s watch. Obamacare was designed to fail so the Democrats could “reform” it with complete government provided socialized medicine. That is the entire purpose for it. Obamacare is designed to collapse so they can backfill the vacuum with government run socialized medicine. Eventually, everyone will be on some form of Medicare. I believe that was one of Bernie’ ...

This Is My Take On Obamacare For Oct 03, 2013
So this is what I have learned.   After listening about the new health insurance, this is what I know. There are 3 levels of care/cost. Well after listening to a question and answer discussion on line program coming out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota hospital systems, it scared me greatly. If all the young people join this program, it will not help the older people who live on a fixed inc ...

When discussing the ACA or Obamacare, whichever you call it, remember that it is literally like comparing apples and oranges (and grapes, pineapple and maybe even potatoes).  Each state has different prices and different plans from the federal plan.  Some states now have only one company offering a plan through their state exchange.  Each plan has a different monthly cost, a different deductable and it goes on and on and on.  The requirements are different from state to state ...

IC MTs And ObamacareJan 06, 2017
For those MTs on here cheering the repeal of Obamacare keep in mind that many of your fellow IC MTs are on Obamacare currently and with health issues.  They were unable to secure insurance prior to the ACA and today are covered for their health issues at an affordable rate.   You write of soaring premiums under Obamacare but fail to take into consideration the cost of individual health insurance rates in your "free market."  Those rates for me were over $1,200 per month for 1 ind ...
