The crux of the issue -- mental health issues

Posted: Oct 2, 2015

The gunman who carried out the deadly attack on Umpqua Community College was described Friday as a “hate-filled” individual, with anti-religion and white supremacist leanings who has long struggled with mental health issues, law enforcement sources said. Officials said Friday they had recovered 13 weapons tied to the shooter, Chris Harper Mercer, 26. Six were found at the college, seven were found during a search of his apartment -- and all were legally purchased, officials said. http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-oregon-shooting-20151002-story.html Solution?;

Do not say his name..... - as per the sheriff's request

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't give future shooters the satisfaction of thinking their name will be all over the news - and he or she will be famous forever - just say "the shooter" as some of the news channels are doing.....bravo to them for doing as the sheriff asked.....

I also hate the term shooter. Reminds me of a - Dirty Harry movie. How bout killer?

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, but DH is an Eastwood fan.

Yeah, what we refer to him by, perp, the guy, shooter, - his name, whatever, NOT the issue

[ In Reply To ..]
MENTAL ILLNESS and GUN AVAILABILITY.
You can pass all the gun laws you want. It won't - stop psychos from murdering.
[ In Reply To ..]
We have laws against murder. We have laws against rape. We have laws against stealing. Does that stop people?

sigh...it would slow them down...other methods - not as effective
[ In Reply To ..]
over and over and over again. Statistics from other countries bear this out. We have the highest homicide rate of any developed country.

As much resistance as this gets, I am beginning to think people have stock in gun companies or ammunition manufacturers.
Sigh. I can post statistics that show just the opposite. - Murder rates fall with conceal carry.
[ In Reply To ..]
I can show you charts and grafts.

More backdoor assaults on the second amendment by Obama and the left. Fighting with gun grabbers over what is even the truth is pointless and distracting.

The so-called statistics the gun grabbers use are skewed. They only use cases where a defensive use of a gun resulted in the death of an attacker who was also using a gun. There are very few situation where that actually occurs. The gun is more often a deterrent. Those statistics are never used.

It's just like polls.
Tell that to the people of Australia and.... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
every other developed country. The NRA is spending billions to feed Americans the lie that the government is coming to take your guns away, and their funding comes from gun manufacturers. If not more sensible gun laws, what is the solution? Should we just accept that "stuff happens" like Jeb Bush says?
If you are referring to the shooting in Australia, - it was an act of terrorism
[ In Reply To ..]
from a 15-YO from Iran.
No, I am referring to this... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Australians think we are nuts. They instituted strict gun ownership laws and the results have been no mass shootings in 19 years, not since Tasmania.
I see you were listening to that guy who calls himself president again - Not worth the TV time he takes
[ In Reply To ..]
in his so-called press conferences. He's so full of it and he doesn't even know what's going on in the world, nor does he care if Americans are taken prisoner for bogus reasons or even beheaded!

an intellectual because he went to Haaavad. He's nothing but an idealog, a spoiled brat and bully who has to have everything his way or he pouts and puffs up his skinny little chest and expects everyone to run and hide. Well, most of us will not give up our guns OR our Bibles, no matter what little Executive Edict he passes to bypass Congress. He'll have to pry it out of my cold dead hands.
Violent crime ROSE in Australia after gun ban - every place there is gun control

Thanks for posting this.
It's interesting to read how other countries condemn shootings in the US. - We are made up of 50 individual states
[ In Reply To ..]
that are sort of like countries in themselves. Example: Alabama is the size of Greece. Last year in the UK 146 people died from gun related deaths. The UK is the size of Oregon, Washington and a bit of Idaho but yet the world sees the US as a whole when comparing gun related deaths. You break down the stats into individual states and compare them to European countries and our stats are much lower. You can fit a little over three Europe's into the US with a bit left over; three million square miles vs a bit over 9 million square miles for the US.

That idiot Piers Morgan keeps bashing the US over our gun deaths when he doesn't have a clue of what size the US is compared to other countries.
One of the problems of the US is that it's - too big. Too many people,
[ In Reply To ..]
too many square miles, too many states. For the most part, it's un-governable... much like Russia was, and most likely China will become. I wouldn't be surprised if someday in the future the U.S. broke up into several smaller countries, and that might be the best thing for it. Because right now, it's not working out very well.
Unfortunately, the NRA and the Republican Congress have - blocked funding to study
[ In Reply To ..]
Gun violence by the CDC.

So any research available is limited, no major studies done or reported since 1996, certainly not in the last few years when the gun deaths have exploded thanks to all these mass shootings.

"Congress has continued to block dedicated funding. Obama requested $10 million for the CDC’s gun violence research in his last two budgets. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) have introduced bills supporting the funding. Both times the Republican-controlled House of Representatives said no. Maloney recently said she planned to reintroduce her bill this year, but she wasn’t hopeful."

How's that freedom of speech thing working for you, Republican lawmakers (by far the biggest NRA supporters and recipients)?

Love that the gun violence statistics have to be quashed and threatened, kind of reminds me how the fracking juice is not allowed to be disclosed either. Why? because Dick Cheney made a rule to protect himself from that.

Nothing like throwing out the revered Constitution when it suits your purpose (profit at all costs because you want those NRA lobby/oil company dollars flowing in).

I have to think that the only way these anti-gun control lawmakers will wake up is if they are affected directly. Just like those always wanting war war war, you have to think the only thing that will make them realize the human element is when someone in their family is killed. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but aren't they just turning their backs on the human toll it is taking on everyone else?
There are plenty of studies, why do taxpayers - need to pay for more? Do
[ In Reply To ..]
you think a study is going solve any problems?

I wish they would've stopped the study on why lesbians are fat. Would have saved us millions.
I would rather my tax dollars go towards studying - problems rather than creating more.
[ In Reply To ..]
I wonder if Obama will invite Chris Mintz, the young man - who tried to stop the shooter
[ In Reply To ..]
and ended up begin shot 7 times but survived after serving in the military (by the way, his little son's birthday was the same day as the shooting), to the White House.

Why not call him what he is - anonie

[ In Reply To ..]
A Murderer. Don't know why people in news can't just call him what he was.
Because they would rather blame the gun. The gun did it. - NM

Good luck swimming against the MSM tide on this one. - It's all about gun control now.
[ In Reply To ..]
Otherwise, Obama and the media will lose interest on this one. The victims were Christian, so the national discussion is about gun control. Not bigotry, not intolerance or some kind of phobia.

Exhibit A: I just read about 40 paragraphs in the Seattle Times about the victims and there was NO mention of the fact (reported by several eyewitnesses) that the killer explicitly targeted Christians.

That is why many people don't trust the MSM to get it right.
As usual nothing will change. If the mass murder - sm

of 20 children in Sandy Hook did not lead to change nothing will.
The only thing that will effect a change in the US - is to eradicate the right wing.

there must have been some kind of inkling on her part that something was wrong with him as his mental stability deteriorated.

Also, unless he lived in a locked room that she NEVER entered - EVER, how on earth did he amass so many high-powered guns without her knowledge?

In some cases like this, I think the parents have to start taking some accountability, instead of just pretending their little darling is "okay", and is "just going through a phase".

Where was his father? Kids need both parents. - His father seems to be absent.

His mother was also a gun-freak, so that pretty - much makes his father irrelevant.

[ In Reply To ..]
The Oregon shooter inherited her lack of good sense, and I wouldn't doubt that she's the one that bought him his very first gun and taught him how to shoot it. Way to go, Mom. Your offspring has fulfilled your greatest fantasies.

Colbert nailed it - Changing nothing and pretending - something will change

What does the right know about humor? Do - they think shooting people is funny?

[ In Reply To ..]
They obviously must... so many mass shooting perpetrators seem to have deep NRA, religious and right-wing roots.

Funny, I think the same thing about Baltimore, New Orleans, Detroit, South Central LA, every time - that demand change continue to elect

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
