Alabama, guns and children---good mix?

Posted: Jul 7, 2015

Alabama legislature is trying to make it so, for children to legally possess handguns, with parental permission. This should work well. The same ages of kids that go through cell phones like water, because they can't find them, et cetera, but at least we can turn them off and make them safe if they are lost or stolen (which does not apply to my child, hasn't lost his. So, I must be a responsible parent, should I get him a gun?...rhetorical...NEVER happening) http://www.ifyouonlynews.com/guns/new-alabama-bill-would-allow-kids-to-have-handguns-casket-sales-should-skyrocket/ Oh, and lest we forget, kids, in general, are so safe with guns. This is just this weekend's example. Plenty more. Usually 1 every week or so. http://freakoutnation.com/2015/07/3-year-old-texas-toddler-shoots-himself-in-the-head-while-playing-with-grandpas-gun/;

When are people going to do the reseach for themselves? - Truthhurts

That site is just trying to "rile you up." It would be so nice if people didn't just take one article and use it AS truth, but check as many articles as you can to get TO the truth.

Here's the REAL law...and by the way, most states have the same rules and regulations for "minors" of age 18 or older. Look it up for yourself.  The underlined sentences are amended rules.  So, up until this time, every "minor" who went hunting with their family member was breaking the law, as was the family member who took the "minor" hunting with them. Ever "minor" who went to target shooting was breaking the law if they did more than just watch. They are now in the 21th century. There's nothing wrong with this amendment to the law.

Relating to firearms; to amend Sections 13A-11-76, 6 13A-11-79, 13A-11-84, and 40-12-143 of the Code of Alabama 1975, relating to the licensing and regulation of retail dealers in pistols and regulating the sale of pistols; to allow a person under the age of 18 to receive or possess a pistol under certain conditions; and to eliminate certain record-keeping and administrative requirements.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA: 13 Section 1. Sections 13A-11-76, 13A-11-79, 13A-11-84, and 40-12-143 of the Code of Alabama 1975, are amended to read 15 as follows:

 "§13A-11-76. 17

"(a) No person shall deliver a pistol to any person under the age of 18 or to one who he or she has reasonable cause to believe has been convicted of a crime of violence or is a drug addict, an habitual drunkard, or of unsound mind.

"(b) Subsection (a) does not apply if the minor has the consent of his or her parent, guardian, or spouse who is 18 years of age or older to possess a pistol and any of the following conditions are satisfied:

"(1) The minor is in the presence of his or her parent, guardian, or spouse who is 18 years of age or older, or in the presence of another person who is 18 years of age or older.

"(2) The minor is on the premises owned or leased by the minor's parent or other immediate family member, guardian, or on the premises with the consent of the lawful owner or possessor of the premises.

"(3) The minor is in the presence of a licensed or 8 accredited gun safety instructor.

"(4) The pistol is being used for hunting, trapping, target shooting, competing in a firearm competition, or firearm or hunting training or instruction.

Check out this site if you don't believe me on hunting laws for minors. That's why the Alabama law was changed.

These are the minimum ages for every state.

having been raised in Alabama - I am mortified

[ In Reply To ..]
by the people who seem to pass judgement without knowing anything about Alabama or its citizens.

I have 22 cousins in Alabama, all of us having handled guns since before being enrolled in school. None of us have ever once shot any person - Alabama citizen or otherwise, no individual making ignorant racist remarks or in full possession of intelligent reasoning.

We continue to strongly regard our rights to use firearms as a common living practice. We also enjoy archery hunting and spear fishing. There is a lot of undeveloped and beautiful land in this state.

We were taught using drugs, smoking cigarettes and breaking laws were things to avoid. We were taught to give as much to others as to our own family.

The previous poster was right. Going out to hunt on family land has been around for a long time, and it won't be fading away any time soon. Getting it legalized after a couple hundred years of practical use is common sense reasoning.

My immediate reaction is my MIL who wanted - me to use the old baby crib-nobody ever died in it

There a lot of things that used to be considered safe that with good judgment, research, statistics and realization have been deemed irresponsible and not good decisions.

When did you start hunting with hand guns?

So you posted under me and you are mortified because the law is changing? - Truthhurts

I posted the law in AL as it is to be changed. Then I posted the laws for minors in every state.

And you are mortified because I posted the truth while the original poster is against the law being changed and thinks kids will be killing people and think it shouldn't change?

I don't understand why you would be against it if you have relatives living in AL that went hunting even though it was AGAINST the law and your relatives could have been fined or gone to jail without that change.
following the dots - I am not mortified

to people doing their own research.

I am mortified about people slinging bigotry rather than contributing to a conversation.

I am not at all against the changes in the law.
Everyone who "posts under" someone does - not disagree with the comment

I first took it that she might be mortified that they would pass a law allowing children to have guns. By second sentence, I could see that was not the case.

Any of the conditions of (B) being satisfied - so ok on their property-not OK

I actually did research some other articles about this and find it irresponsible to end-run the record-keeping (which will bite them someday when they are trying to trace crime that they care about pursuing) and this allows:
"(2) The minor is on the premises owned or leased by the minor's parent or other immediate family member, guardian, or on the premises with the consent of the lawful owner or possessor of the premises.
AND
"(3) The minor is in the presence of a licensed or 8 accredited gun safety instructor. --- THIS IS set up for a replay of that kid shooting his instructor with at the fire range earlier this year.

I guess this works fine for people who like to see guns in the hands of children?

Guns And Intrinsic Danger. Or, "guns Don't Kill, People Kill"Dec 15, 2012
If I were at a party, left the adults and put a nerf ball in the familiy room where the children were playing, nobody'd think anything of it. If I put a loaded gun in there, every adult would rush to get it before the children did. THAT IS BECAUSE GUNS ARE INTRINSICALLY DANGEROUS. The only thing that changed was the presence of a gun, but no one would claim it was actually the children who were dangerous. Suicides by gun are much more likely to result in death than ANY of the other usual ...

Americans never give up your guns 28.12.2012   By Stanislav Mishin  These days, there are few things to admire about the socialist, bankrupt and culturally degenerating USA, but at least so far, one thing remains: the right to bear arms and use deadly force to defend one's self and possessions.
