My marriage

Posted: Jun 27, 2015

So I woke up this morning and took stock of my quarter-century old heterosexual marriage, in light of yesterday's historic ruling by the SCOTUS.

Imagine my complete lack of shock and surprise when I found it was every bit as healthy, strong, and meaningful as it has always been, despite the fact that all gay Americans can now enjoy the same privelege.

The sanctity of my marriage appears entirely unaffected. Oh, and the nation hasn't been destroyed by some cataclysmic event as a result of some imaginary god's wrath.

Gosh, to hear the religious mouthpieces prattle on, I was sure by now my marriage would have been a shambles and the earth would have swallowed us up.

;

I suspect that cons are so - annoyed about this

because so many straight marriages and families are in shambles they begrudge happiness (and stability) to anyone. The LGBT community has always created families and bonds, often in the face of being abandoned to die in the most horrible circumstances by their biological (many times good Christian or religious) relatives. They don't necessarily need the State telling them that what they have is every bit as real straight families, but now if they choose, they can enjoy some of the same protections, rights and even problems of all marriages. I am glad most of the country has moved forward on this issue, and I feel sorry for those who choose to hate on this.

Why would we be annoyed? - acceptance

I don't wish unhappiness for anyone. I am a conservative and celebrated legalizing same sex marriage with my homosexual friends. An historic ruling indeed.

Much appreciated - Blanche

I appreciate your position. It indicates to me that you think for yourself rather than merely following the herd. I would no doubt disagree with you on many points, but but it's good to know that while parties may be strongly divided, individuals can find common ground if only they look.

On this, we agree completely. - acceptance

It just shows that it is possible to put aside party affiliations for the good the country. To me, marriage is about love and dedication, not orientation. I follow that morality rule - I don't view homosexuality as immoral in any way. I view disposable marriages as immoral, however. I guess I never understood that angle. Two husbands or two wives are no different than husband and wife when it comes down to the basis of marriage.

Are you writing to insult a group? - There are libs annoyed by this too - sm

First, am sure there are a lot of people annoyed from all political parties. I'm a conservative and like many of my conservatives friends and people throughout the country we are not annoyed. Since it doesn't affect us there is no need to be annoyed. Besides not everyone who is annoyed is a conservative. Liberals do go to church too (just in case you didn't know that). There are liberals who also believe marriage is between a man and woman (in case you didn't know). There really was no need to write a post with veiled attempts to insult conservatives.

The Supreme Court does not make rulings on behalf of religious institutions. - sm

I didn't think the post was an attempt to insult conservatives, veiled or otherwise. Obviously, everyone already knows that "liberals do go to church too" and that "there are liberals who also believe marriage is between a man and woman," but you seem to be implying here that liberals who go to church and who believe that marriage is between a man and a woman are against the Supreme Court's decision, and you should know that nothing could be further from the truth. Oh, I am sure that some are against it, but I would guess that the vast majority of liberals who "do go to church too" and "believe marriage is between a man and woman" would be the first ones to stand up and applaud this Supreme Court ruling and voice their support for this very important equal rights issue.

The Supreme Court does not make rulings on behalf of religious institutions, merely rulings on behalf of the government. The Supreme Court has done nothing here whatsoever with respect to any religious institution but has rather granted equal rights in the eyes of the government of the United States of America that same-sex couples should be entitled to equal protection under the laws of the state that other couples have enjoyed for centuries. It is simply marriage equality in the eyes of our government.

Anyone of any political party affiliation or anyone of any religious affiliation who thinks this ruling is about "church" or does anything to redefine religious doctrine in any way is simply mistaken (just in case they didn't know that). :)

As a "con," I couldn't be happier - Shelley

My daughter's best friend in school has two moms that now don't have to leave our state in order to get married - and they've asked me to make their wedding cake and do their flowers - although that might not have been the best idea, as I haven't done a wedding cake in a couple of years :)

Oh and BTW, I'm also a Christian. I've always been taught not to judge an entire group of people by the actions of a few, even if they are the loudest.

Same-sex Marriage. Excellent Dec 02, 2009
A right to say 'I do'By Richard CohenTuesday, December 1, 2009 The truth is that if Maj. Nidal Hasan, the accused killer of 13 people at Fort Hood, had entered the officers club there with a nice handbag on his arm, perhaps a Gucci tote, he would have been out of the Army by the end of the week. Since he was merely antisocial, a misfit, an incompetent psychiatrist and a likely Islamic fanatic, he was retained and promoted. This says something about America. On the subject of gays, we a ...

Marriage Opinions PleaseOct 23, 2014
May I please vent and get a few opinions on this?  My husband works with a lady who developed a crush on him.  I would not call my husband "flirty" but he is one of those people who are extremely nice all of the time and I could see myself even getting the wrong idea and maybe thinking he was flirting with me if I didn't know him.  So, the lady he works with apparently developed a crush (we have been married 18 years) and she knows a mutual friend of mine and spoke about my h ...
