Is it aging or is it ADD or is it Alzheimer's?

Posted: Jun 23, 2015

Do any of my fellow MTs have (or think you might have) ADD or ADHD?  I'm 60 and have been an MT for over 30 years.  I didn't "used" to have trouble concentrating.  I could whip out those reports with speed and accuracy.  These days, though, I find that my attention span goes on vacation several times a day.  Learning new programs takes twice the amount of time that it used to.  I have to read and re-read the instructions over and over again.

I looked at some websites about adult ADD.  Apparently, it's a real phenomenon, and I seem to have it!  Not ADHD, as I sure don't have the hyper part.  Wish I did.  I'd get a lot more housework done.  Laughing

I hope it's not the beginning of Alzheimer's.  Anyone able to relate?

I don't think it's you.

It is also a phenomenon associated with wheat gluten - and ... now ... trans fats.

The association with wheat gluten is well-known. Cognitive changes like you describe associated with trans fats were reported in a mainstream medical journal recently.

My issues cleared right up once I stopped consuming wheat and wheat byproducts. Of course, that also eliminated processed foods and the trans fats, too.

It's intense boredom. Who needs sleep aids - when you can correct ASR? (NM)

I appreciate all your responses. - OP

Very insightful replies! The wheat gluten sensitivity is interesting. Although I'd rather stick with having low attention than to give up the foods I love. But a lot of people swear by it.

We all can identify with the almost hypnotic trance we're in sometimes when we're editing SR!

Anybody Coping With Living With A Parent With Alzheimer's?Jun 28, 2013
I moved mom in with me about a month ago.  I work second shift full time in my home.  Even before I moved mom in, I would see her daily in her home, see she was eating properly, setting her pills out, etc.  She recently had cataract surgery and recovered fine.  We've put her home up for sale and she's none too pleased but I thought she would adjust to living with me.  Our homes are similar, and I made her bedroom in my own look exactly like hers, bath ...

Insulin Therapy Beneficial To Alzheimer's PatientsSep 13, 2011
Intranasal insulin therapy appears to provide some benefit for cognitive function in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease Funding for this study has been provided by the National Institute of Aging, the Nancy and Buster Alvord Endowment and the Department of Veterans Affairs. (the NIA is a division of the National Institute of Health, a government program, as is the DoVA). I wonder how many people realize that important studies like this are done by our F ...

Small Towns Watch Aging Hospitals ShutterMar 05, 2016
Saw this on PBS last night. My heart breaks for these small towns. In a lot of them, the hospital was the anchor. People have lost jobs, stores have closed, seniors have to travel hundreds of miles for health care. What has become of this country? More than 50 rural hospitals have closed since 2010 (during Okingme's reign) as well as many more community hospitals throughout the land. ...
