Is it just me, or does this bother anyone else?

Is it just me, or does this bother anyone else?

I was at the grocery store ... Publix, which is not exactly low-end ... waiting for my deli purchase to be sliced and just starting to head about fifteen feet away to pick up a roast chicken, when ... cue Jaws theme ... some woman riding one of those store-provided motorized carts zooms up and completely blocks all access to the to the roast chicken display.   That part in itself isn't the issue; I was happy to wait.  It did, however, prevent me from taking immediate action to circumvent what happened next.

The woman commenced to reach her arm into the display case to snaffle out every last chicken, which were in paper bags that have fairly large see-through windows and two ventilation holes on each side at the top, just below where they fold over.  With each of the fifteen chickens, she first attempted to unroll the fold to open the bag, but was foiled by the adhesive.  She then handled each one thoroughly, and brought it an inch from her nose to peer into the window.  And then she practically stuck her nose into the holes to smell the chicken.  At length she smelled it, then peered in the window again.  She then rejected each one, flinging it back into the case.   When she finished manhandling and smelling all fifteen birds, she very nonchalantly picked up the two chickens that had been in the front to begin with, plopped them into her cart, and zoomed off.

This woman was not visually handicapped.  She consulted a shopping list during this process and had no trouble reading it at arm's length.

The chickens were also all the same flavor, which was clearly indicated on the label, so she couldn't have been searching for a different kind.

Does this kind of thing gross you out?  It did me.  And remember, I was unable to snatch one before she got to it because she blocked the display.

I wanted to go over and ask her if there was possibly one single chicken that she had not pawed with her grimy mitts and had not snorted her germs all over.  I didn't though.

I was brought up not to handle food products excessively, or open them, and definitely not to smell anything except perhaps cantaloupe and pineapples, and then to do so discreetly, not like a dog smelling something nasty in the grass.

Am I alone in this?  What would you do?

People like that are why I wash all my fruit - before I eat it, and why... s/m

I use hand sanitizer both before and after entering the supermarket.

That is disgusting - Little old ladies

Do little old ladies ever block the middle of the aisle so you cannot pass, look you in the eye, and then make no move so you can go through? I cannot believe how often this happens here. It is so irritating.

Men will do it too. I patiently waited behind a man at a display, he finally moved on and stopped a few feet ahead and started examining the next display. I got my first item and quickly squeezed around him and stopped further down the aisle with plenty of room for people to go around me. He almost rammed into me and glared at me like I had no business going around him. (I had barely hesitated at the display). He did not even stop at the display then, but just went down the middle of the aisle so no one could pass around him. Just an ornery old fart--and I am no spring chicken.

Agree 100% - anon

I totally agree about the aisle blockers. I am sorry to say my husband is a chronic aisle blocker, but he is totally unaware of it. I tell him all the time to get out of everyone's way, and he is clueless. As irritating as I find this to be, he will apologize (but then does it again). I was at a bakery the other day where they had a large rolling cart filled with cakes and a child walks over to look at them and proceeds to sneeze all over them. I decided to go elsewhere.

Some people are just - xx

basically feral and have no boundaries whatsoever. People like that possess not a shred of decency or consideration for others and cannot be reasoned with.

It is always shocking to encounter someone like that, but it is generally not worth it to confront them or point out that what they are doing is unacceptable. They do not possess the social skills or even a frame of reference to comprehend the concept of modifying behavior out of consideration for others. They are also often just basically angry and aggressive and not pleasant to interact with even under normal circumstances.

The best thing to do is to observe carefully as you did to appreciate the behavior in all its awful glory, then turn the experience into a humorous anecdote. You can't fix them, so you may as well get some entertainment out of them.

Just pity them and be glad you are you and not them. They are irreparably broken.

Just so gross. This is why I NEVER buy any food - that could even possibly

be touched or sniffed by anyone. And I still wash everything, do the hand sanitizer thing in the store.....

Some years ago I ordered the salad bar for dinner at Hoss's restaurant. When I walked back to that area I saw a woman pick up the spoon from the container of hot soup and put it in her mouth, then placed it back in the container. Needless to say, no soup for me. That's why I hesitate to select items from the salad bar. Who cuts the vegetables, and under what conditions? Add to that what the public does and I'm out.

Similar thing happened - at a breakfast bar

We saw a woman pick up several sausage links with her bare hands and then toss them back in the pile. Gross. That's when we quit buffet bars.

Ugh! I also wanted to add to my post above - SM

that I also went into a pizza shop to order takeout. The guy was flipping the crust and twirling it around when the phone rang. Sure enough (and this is why wearing gloves is a laugh) He answers the filthy phone with a gloved hand, then hangs up and wearing the same gloves proceeds to prepare the crust again. Left on the spot. That is also the reason I tell them NO LEMON in my water. I saw firsthand at a bar how the gal cleaned the bar and picked up dirty glasses with her gloves on, and then picked up lemons and sliced them. Thanks, but NO THANKS.

Handwashing . . . - or not

Never mind the zipper. At work last week, I was walking past a men's room when some loser charged out still stuffing Li'l Johnny back in.

Would This Bother Anyone Else Other Than Me?Dec 18, 2010
Okay, I KNOW it is better to give than receive, and I absolutely do liove giving at the Christmas season and I am not even sure why this even irritates me so much...... So, my mother-in-law has 8 children with wives/husbands, families, etc.  So, every year for Christmas she would give a food gift card to each family and depending on how large the family is, it may or may not be enough for a full meal for all, but it was a great thought and very nice.  Well, beginning last year, my MIL ...

Some members of Congress apparently don’t like to be reminded about how much debt the country continues to rack up. During a House Financial Services Committee hearing Tuesday on the budget, two Democrats complained after House Financial Services Committee chairman Jeb Hensarling instructed that two monitors in the hearing room display a real-time running national debt clock. California Rep. Maxine Waters and Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison both issued complaints about the displays, accor ...

Romney's economic plan is built around continuing the flow of national wealth to a few, but he could always have just claimed it didn't. we're already scr=wed, because Bush went in and stirred up that hornet's nest for no reason a few years back.  I don't think that region can EVER be "fixed", or even improved.  They'll likely destabilize the rest of world right along with their rabid belief that everyone must follow Islam principles, or die.    So, whatever happens, happens.  If the Pubs think they can improve this mess, they're only kidding themselves.   Meanwhile, not ...
