Age-old question; to tip, or not to tip the hairdresser?

Posted: May 30, 2015

One girl did everything for me, fairly small shop, and I think she's the main hairdresser there.  Definitely not the owner, probably not a manager.

She washed, cut, spritzed, and braided my hair to finish. No special or extra service.  I had an appointment, wasn't a walk-in or last minute work-in.   Standard price $35, but she gave a discount this time at $25.   The sales slips, as always, had a tip section, but I never know if I am supposed to tip or not.  She walked me out, rang up the charge and signed me out herself.

I really hate this.  I can't ever figure out whether to tip or not, and always flustered at the last minute to figure a tip of even 20% because I suck so badly at math.  Now, after the fact, (as always)  I can figure a tip amount later on, but never at that point.  So the tip on a $25 cut would have been $5 and next time at standard price would be 7.00.

Did I mention how much I  REALLY hate the whole tipping concept and procedure??   If I wanted to pay $37+ for a haircut, I'd go find a more expensive salon downtown somewhere.

I always tip my stylist. - sm

Regular cut, no shampoo (cutting dry hair is MUCH better), she charges $30 and I always give her $40. When I get my highlights done which is foils, shampoo and cut it's $125 and I always give her $140. She does a great job, I always get compliments on my cut and color and she deserves every penny of it!

What is worse I think is when you are asked - how much tip are you leaving

[ In Reply To ..]
My husband and I did eat out at Cracker Barrel, I said did. He would usually hand the waiter our tip, did not leave on the table. When we went to pay for the meal we were asked time and time again about what we wanted to leave. Tips are for good service, not for every little piddling thing you buy. We stopped going to CB. I went to a hamburger place this week and someone took my order, someone cooked the burger and I put the rest of the toppings on the burger. On their receipt it had a place for a tip. I did not leave one. I do when traveling leave a tip for the person cleaning my room each day, usually about $2.00 or $3.00 per day. I tip on good food service, usually 15 to 20%. You give me really good service, pleasant, etc. and I tally up with the 20%. I am totally against a place expecting me to tip. That is up to me as a customer and a tip is not always required. I color my own hair but have a hair piece I wear (hair loss due to thyroid problem) and have a lady who styles that in her home, usually takes about 20 minutes for the wash and styling. She charges $20.00 and I usually give an extra $5.00.

I generally tip my hairdresser. How much depends on - Lou

[ In Reply To ..]
how much time she spent with me, how much attention she paid to me, and if I'm satisfied with my hair when it's all said and done.

If I feel like she's giving me the bum's rush because she's anxious to get the next person in her chair, so dwindles her tip.

I had a beautician sit me in her chair, ask me what I wanted and then proceeded with the a dry cut. I know that dry cuts are supposedly better, blah, blah, blah. But I would like to be asked if I want a shampoo, especially when their sign says it is included in the price of the haircut.

There are a lot of variables for tipping at the salon!

Oh, and I would never tip the owner of a salon! - Lou

[ In Reply To ..]
They own the place. The stylists usually pay the owners rent for their space in the salon, they pay for their own supplies, etc. I just don't think the owners need to be tipped.

You are correct ... not necessary to tip the salon owner - when they do your hair.

[ In Reply To ..]
It is not necessary to tip the owner of the salon, even if they provide the service. It is a lot nicer, however, to tip them.
To Lou RE tipping owner - Dazed and confused
[ In Reply To ..]
My stylist is also the salon owner. I tip her and think I receive better service because of it. Salon owners have expenses too. She's the only stylist and does not receive rent from anyone else. Dry haircuts are not better, in my opinion as I think it's more difficult to cut hair evenly when it is not wet/damp but that's just my opinion. Sometimes stylists skip the shampoo in order to get more bodies in the chair. And, if you are being charged and this service is not being provided, then they need to deduct it from the cost of your haircut. I believe in tipping when I receive good service, so use your own judgment. It's not mandatory but it is definitely appreciated, and stylists do remember the clients who stiff them on tips.

but I have gotten better about it. I try to tip my hairdresser 15%. My daughter recently had an updo for prom and it cost $65. It only took the girl a half hour and she didn't wash my daughter's hair so I only tipped her $5. I was kind of in sticker shock over the cost of the updo, but in hindsight I should have just coughed up the 15%. I think back to when I was young and didn't know you were supposed to tip bartenders. They must have hated me! I go to a pizza place every week and pick up my pizza so I don't have to tip the delivery guy, but they have a tip basket on the counter where you pay. I accidentally dropped a quarter in there once, but I will never leave them any money on purpose. How hard is it to ring up a pizza?

DD is stylist and a tip is expected. Easy to calculate, take 1st # of cost $ - times that by 1-1/2 or 2. nm

I always tip my hairdresser, and I tip her well. She is an IC and rents a spot at a salon. She pays for all her own hair products, scissors (which cost a fortune), etc.

She does a dry cut on me because I have weird waves, so it's easier on her. We don't shampoo and blow dry, so she will wax my brows and lips and not charge me.

As to "taking time with me," I really don't care if she fusses over me, as long as she gets the job done and done right. You are not paying to be pampered (go to a spa for that), you are paying for the work to be done and done well. I am in and out of there in under 20 minutes, even when she does my brows and lip.

I am not a prima donna who feels I need more "time" spent on me. I only require my hair be done right, which she does.

I used to be in the cleaning business. After a few months, I got really good and really fast at what I did. I never had a complaint. I decided to start charging by the job, and of course, they all started adding work to my day because I got done "too fast" in their mind. My work was just as good as when I was slow.

When you have experience, you get good at it and you get fast, so I don't think it's fair to tip less because the hairdresser spent less time on you. If it showed up in the finished product, then no, the hairdresser shouldn't get as good a tip.

I always, always tip waitresses. They don't even make minimum wage--they depend on the tips.

I actually have not had my hair done in no acute distress few years--sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I color it myself and cut it myself. It would definitely look better if done by a professional but as the prices keep escalating, it gets harder to justify getting done professionally. At one of the lower priced chains where I take my daughter, I definitely tip. If the cut is only $12, I assume that their share of that is not large and so I try to tip the standard 20%. When a hair cut at other salons starts to approach $40 with tip, and I put that against what I am making in a day, it makes the haircut more of a luxury.

Well, it looks like shorthand expanded for me, oops--nm - anon

tipping is not a city in China - MTMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I know, tipping can be a hassle. But imagine if you had a job where tipping is generally expected. If you didn't get a tip, you would probably think your customer wasn't satisfied.

As for calculating that 20%, if you have a smart phone there's probably an app on it or you can download one (tip calculator). But here's a quick and easy way to figure out the tip. Figure out what 10% would be, then just double that amount. For example, 10% of $50 is $5 (just drop the last digit), double that is $10, so a 20% tip on $50 is $10. Does that make sense?

You should always tip your hairdresser. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
You should always tip your hairdresser. Their pay is based on the assumption that their customers tip. When you do not tip, you short them. Their tip income is reported by their employer as a certain amount, so when you do not tip, it costs them in taxes. This is especially true in low-cost salons.

If you did go to a high-end salon, you would still have to tip.

If you cannot figure a tip by taking 10% and doubling it, get a wallet card that has the amounts printed on it.

I hate to say it, but when you don't tip or tip poorly, you cheat people out of their income just as your MTSO employers cheat you.

I agree - needs to be done - Suefred

And in the same way you'd leave the full tip at a restaurant for both meals if you had a coupon for "buy one get one free" (I mean, wouldn't you??), the hair stylist should not be penalized if her store is offering a special. I mean if I pay $5.99 for my haircut at Best Clips if they are running a special, I believe she should still get 20% on what the haircut would have ordinarily cost. I'm still saving money. Why should the stylist be penalized because the company is running a special? We (who are MTs) of all people know what it's like to be asked to do more for less.

Let me ask you all this... - sm

My hair guy charges $200 for a cut & color (to cover gray). Highlights are more! So he basically makes $200 an hour. I met him 20 years ago, moved about an hour away, and have gone to many stylists in 20 years. I always end up back at the expensive guy because nobody can cut my hair like him. I get tons of compliments when he cuts my hair. However, it makes me sick to my stomach to pay that kind of money. Starting with my last appointment, I decided he gets a $15 tip no matter what he charges (cut alone is $75). He's not in NYC or Hollywood but just outside of Fort Worth, TX (not Dallas). I also decided I'm going to just let him cut my hair & get it colored locally, which will save me at least $75. So what do you think about my minimal $15 tip? I would really appreciate some opinions. Thank you!
Let me ask you this - Dazed and confused
[ In Reply To ..]
What do I think? Your stylist is ripping you off. You should not be paying $200 for a cut and color. A haircut in my city runs from about $25 to $40 (high end salon). Color is usually $60 - $100 max. Some salons include the cost of the haircut with the color service. No one is that amazing, I'd find another stylist. Please don't come here crying about your poverty level wages when you are coughing up $200 for a cut and color.
It must be because I live in a small town... - Grey lady
[ In Reply To ..]
The woman who cuts my hair owns a salon adjacent to her home and she is the only stylist. She is excellent, personable, and attentive. For a cut, she only charges $19, which includes a wash and conditioner. Color, wash and cut is only $45. I always tip her 20% because she is so good. I'm kind of surprised at the cost of cuts/colors in this thread, but I guess it's because I live in the boonies.

I have never come on here "crying about my poverty level wages." I got tired of being screwed around by Nuance and refused to be taken advantage of by them, so I QUIT! In fact, I'm in my early 50s and RETIRED.
Taken advantage of - Dazed and Confused
[ In Reply To ..]
Your hairdresser is also taking advantage of you, that is all I am saying. You are lucky to be able to retire so early. and lucky to be able to afford to pay that much for a cut and color. I'm guessing you are not a single income household.

Then the salon owner or manager or whoever should - list the prices to include a tip. SM

[ In Reply To ..]
This whole tipping thing really burns my cookies.

People are guilt tripped or shamed these days into tips. What about all the tip jars on counters these days, for people who do nothing but their expected job of ringing up an order or handing over someone's order? They deserve a tip for that??? I absolutely refuse to drop one penny into those jars.

If business owners are reporting employee wages to include tips and expecting employees to report their wage as higher, then they better list the higher price of things to include a tip; $30 haircut should be then rightfully listed as 36. Or the owners had better pay higher wages and report that.

Tips expected, my backside.

Definitely should tip - Anon

I agree, hairdressers/stylists to me should definitely get a tip. I would not be able to walk out of the salon and not leave a tip. I go to Aveda, which is kind of pricey where I live, and they spend a lot of time doing the cut and highlights. I always tip the person who cuts my kids hair, even though one of them just gets a buzz cut. You can also go to Google and type in "how much is 20% of ----? if you have your smartphone with you and you need the answer quickly.

I go to Aveda, too. My stylist is worth every penny. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I consider my current job and responsibilities to be the result of my Aveda stylist's efforts. He converted me from looking like a refugee to a tastefully colored and highlighted professional.

Everyone's attitude toward me changed so dramatically that other people noticed. People stop me on the street to tell me how cute/stunning/fascinating my hair is.

No joke, I can style it three or four ways and can adjust the amount of highlighting that shows by the direction I fluff it. (It is short.)

It takes him two hours minimum to do my hair. Yes, I tip. I am grateful for every bit of effort he puts forth on my behalf.

I would at least give her the $10 you had discounted. - What would that cost you?

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been going to my same hairdresser for 10+ years now. A color touch up (rebleaching the roots) and cut is $90. I usually give her $120. My understanding is that a 20% nowadays is too little.
