Ferguson Protesters Now Protesting Over Not Getting Paid

Posted: May 26, 2015

At least some of the protesters who looted, rioted, burned buildings and overturned police cars in Ferguson, Missouri, last year were promised payment of up to $5,000 per month to join the protests. However, when the Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment (MORE), the successor group to the now-bankrupt St. Louis branch of ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), stiffed the protesters, they launched a sit-in protest at the headquarters of MORE and created a Twitter page to demand their money, the Washington Times reports. Former U.S. Rep. Allen B. West noted on his website, "Instead of being thankful for getting off the unemployment line for a few weeks and having a little fun protesting, the paid rioters who tore up Ferguson, MO, are protesting again. "First of all, can you even imagine getting paid $5,000.00 a month for running around holding a sign and burning down an occasional building? That's around $1,250.00 per week. Try making that at McDonald's or Starbucks." The Kansas City Star estimates that the Ferguson riots, characterized as a spontaneous eruption of anger over the shooting of unarmed black criminal Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, cost the county $4.2 million. Millennial Activists United (MAU) posted a letter on their website stating, "On May 14, 2015 many individuals and organizations of the protest movement that began in Ferguson, Missouri, organized a sit-in in the office of Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment (MORE). The demand was simple: Cut the checks. The protesters say they are unable to pay their bills after taking time to travel to Ferguson. "Questions have been raised as to how the movement is to sustain when white non-profits are hoarding monies collected of off (sic) black bodies? When we will (sic) hold the industry of black suffering accountable? The people of the community are fed up and the accountability begins here and now," the letter continues. "There is an insidious strand of racism and white supremacy that exists in this movement. This money is typically in the hands of white people who oversee the types of services that the non-profit provides, while having select token black people to spearhead the conversations within and to the community." MORE is funded by liberal billionaire George Soros, the Times notes, through his Open Society Foundations (OSF). The OSF, the Times states, paid for activists from various protest groups to travel to Ferguson and take part in the demonstrations. Akiba Solomon of Colorlines stated, "More than 500 of us have traveled from Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Nashville, Portland, Tucson, Washington, D.C., Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and other cities to support the people of Ferguson and help turn a local moment into a national movement," the Times noted. "There's absolutely no doubt that part of the reason that Ferguson flared up was because protesters were being paid to be there. That makes you wonder how many are being paid in Baltimore? How many more will be paid in the future?" The Right Scoop asked. Protesters directed much of their anger against MORE director Jeff Ordower, former Missouri head of ACORN and ACORN's Midwest operations, FrontPage Mag reports. "The unpaid rent-a-mob operatives complain that MORE stiffed them the same way ACORN did to hired protesters throughout its 40 years of radical left-wing rabble-rousing," FrontPage Mag reports. Does hiring people to engage in criminal activities - disqualify ACORN from tax

tax-exempt status? Where is Lois Learner?

I would hope that ACORN did not break the law by failing to verify citizenship status, and that they withheld the appropriate taxes, as well as reporting these payments to the IRS:)

Critical portion of MAU's letter asking for DONATION $ (not pay) release has been omitted - pointed out here last week already (see link) JSug

My exact comment in response to this being posted by another author a week ago, the title of my comment revealing the full letter was not being published, which revealed they were asking for DONATION MONEY RELEASE, not pay lol:

In fact, one of the Twitter selfies these articles as using as "proof" clearly shows one of askers holding her "cut the check" sign WHILE SITTING AT WORK? lol

And, of course, we already knew there'd be no distinction made between protesting and rioting in either the post or these articles;)
There's a reason no reputable publication is publishing this story yet (WT being closest). And there's a reason why the ones that are publishing it are curiously omitting the most important part of the letter.

And that is the part of the letter that clearly asks for the release of organization DONATION money.

All organized protests, from the Freedom Riders to the Civil Rights Marches on Washington to NOW are/were supported and maintained by donations or they couldn't have afforded to leave their jobs, even temporarily, to do so.

This letter is simply a reminder to these larger organizations to release the donation money, they're already poor enough in that area - period.

However, if it is discovered that people protested that otherwise wouldn't have without pay, I'm sure more respected publications will cover this story.

But that isn't what their letter actually says - here's what the FULL letter says:

I believe it's possible the author herself hadn't read the first post on this subject, but not that the commenters underneath this post hadn't - so is that intentional (self?) deception again? ;)

The letter does state that the MORE organization a/k/a formerly ACORN - Truthhurts

cut checks to the protesters in no particular order, so most were not given any money but that another $57K will be given out to black people in 2 weeks (might be this week). It still make some of them professional protesters.

There were white people in the protests, too. Are they going to be left out? :)

I don't believe they should be paid to protest because I believe it takes away from what a protest is really all about. You'll get professionals who just love to riot and trash and burn joining these protests (as seen in Ferguson). It gives legitimate protests a bad name (as seen in Ferguson).

On MORE's page, they state this:
Organization for Black Struggle (OBS) and Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment (MORE) are pleased to offer travel funding for individuals and grassroots groups that are working to advocate for police accountability and Black lives. A fixed sum of $20,000 has been set aside for this initiative. Applications are fulfilled on a 1st come, 1st served basis until the fixed sum is exhausted. In your application, please honor the guiding principle that your funded work/travel be collaborative and shared out to as many people as possible.

Travel funding is available for Individuals ($300), Groups of 3+ ppl ($1000), and Large Collaborations of 6+ ($2000) to take trips that directly help attendees advocate for police accountability and Black lives. Applications must be submitted 2 wks before your departure date.

I also believe that paid voters/fraud from MORE a/k/a ACORN is how Obama was elected twice. Complain about that subject all you want but I haven't changed my mind in 7 years.

I doubt, and am pretty sure, that the protests in the '60s by the Freedom Fighters and the MLK marches were not paid. They did it to stop segregation and by their own free will. If you have any proof that they were paid, I'd like to see it.

I said the omitted portion of the letter reveals it's DONATION REIMBURSEMENT for time off - etc to protest, NOT PAY to riot (edited)JS

[ In Reply To ..]
Particularly amusing was one of the articles presenting this "story" showed a Twitter selfie of a girl who was actually sitting at her desk at work at her regular job, holding a "cut the check" for the donations/reimbursement (for time off, travel etc.) sign?

I guess that escaped the author and the OP's ;)

Please address what I actually said and the point the OP and I addressed - "pay" vs. "donation/reimbursement money" and why the article nor the OP makes a distinction between protesting vs. rioting

If not, suit yourself, but don't be surprised if accusations of "offering straw man arguments as distraction" pop up again from other commenters over it
PS: And of course the Freedom Riders took private/org donations or they couldn't afford counter - food, bus $ and jail bond $? ~ Julia Sugarbaker
[ In Reply To ..]
If they were that wealthy to begin with and could afford to take time off from high or even equal-paying jobs, there'd be no need for the Freedom Riders, then, now would there be?

Yes, they took donations from various organizations including the NAACP legal defense fund and many others.

Now come on, I know you're not dumb, Truth Hurts, fess up, you knew that one already;)

who didn't receive a cent, including myself. We volunteered in droves. We never bought votes. I did personally drive voter registration cards to register voters, they were registered as having voted Democrat in the prior primaries and I did state that I was from the Obama for Change office (read into that what you will). I never consciously did not register anyone who wished to be registered, and wouldn't, as I am a liberal with a conscience. I am certain there are some that don't have conscience about democracy, but that can be quite a list on both sides.

Interesting you mention another $57K for "black people?" Can you post reference. Please don't tell me to research this, or "google is your friend" or any other garbage, you have done the research, just share it, I do with others, when I can, i.e. have found it and can retrieve it.

I'D go protest all police everywhere today, regardless of the race of the victim.

Good thing it's NOT true that is a policeman's job. If it were, it would happen several times a day, every day, but it doesn't because many policemen are better trained/exhibit more self-control than Darren Wilson.

I presume you have been without news - service since August?

Undocumented Immigrants Paid $11.2 Billion In Taxes While GE Paid NothingJul 04, 2011
This past month, there was much outrage over the fact that General Electric, despite making $14.2 billion in profits, paid zero U.S. taxes in 2010. General Electric actually received tax credits of $3.2 billion from American taxpayers. At the same time that General Electric was not paying taxes, many undocumented immigrants, who are typically accused of taking advantage of the system while not contributing to it by many on the right, paid $11.2 billion in taxes. 13 Facts About Ferguson The Media Will Never Tell You Nov 26, 2014
