Politically correctness has to stop

Posted: Mar 19, 2015

I am so glad my daughter is so politically incorrect she keeps me almost rolling in the aisles laughing. I think I have heard it all only to hear something else. She leaves no one out, everyone can be a target. Refreshing! Ok, so I get it the fraternity singing on the bus about never letting N's join their fraternity. That was ridiculous because now everyone has cameras, something to record with so what you say can make it to the airways. The fraternity no more, disbanded, get that. Just heard this morning the University of Georgia now saying that the southern belle can be no more, that is the hooped dresses the ladies here in the south wear to the dances have to go because it could remind others of slavery. I am just so over all this politically correct because it has gone too far. When I was a young girl I had and wore (like most in my school) the crinolines under my skirts and we did it for the flaring of the skirt, not because we were thinking racist thoughts. The representative for UGA said does not want to offend. Really? ;

It is beyond idiotic to believe that a style of skirt - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
can provoke racist thought. How can an educated, sane person make any kind of rational correlation between how women dressed in the south in the pre-civil war era and slavery?!?!?!

Politcal correctness is the liberal leftists attempt to dumb down society. They want to to tell us how to think, what to say, and when they don't agree - they label it racist, intolerant, etc. Wake up, there is no such thing as true freedom of speech anymore. There's only "freedom" of speech if you are in agreement with the powers that be.

Know this guy is not a liberal, but rather die in - the wool r.....

[ In Reply To ..]
and am the original poster, and I am a liberal so you see the roles as you see them are reversed here. When I think of old, gray, stuck in the mud people, as my state seems to be, not thinking liberal in any way, shape or form.

Dyed in the wool - Stick in the mud

NM
Realize you are trying to correct me here but - I meant stuck in the mud
[ In Reply To ..]
The first was dyed but the second is exactly what I meant. By the way, the moderator does not like when you try to correct others, just for the info.

Not following you here, but I stand by my statement above - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
political correctness is part of the liberal agenda and true freedom of speech does not exist. Heck our elected POTUS has decided our constitution, The Constitution matters very little or at least he picks and chooses which parts matter.
Not talking politics per se here and what I said was the - person talking about doing away with
[ In Reply To ..]
the hoops was NOT a liberal, known to be a republican person as seems most are the people in the state so your statement was off. I was speaking of one thing and not trying at all to be political with the hoop thing, just ridiculous for the ....correctness that others want to follow now days so as to not step on anyone's toes. It surely does not just happen on the political front at all, so that was what I was talking about, not your president.

hooped dresses - toximoxi

[ In Reply To ..]
The dresses you are describing sound like well over 100 years ago. People wear hoop dresses nowadays?

Those may not be as popular, of course, but - places like say the Cotton Ball

[ In Reply To ..]
held in a southern state each year young girls might like to wear those. Google and you can see.

Of course it is not the norm for most but something that is a part of fashion, not something to incite.

Let me tell you where you can see the - hooped dresses like today

[ In Reply To ..]
I had on "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" last night. I find it to be a hoot. If you want to see hoops that are in play now, watch that on the TLC. And just to think you thought no one ever wore those now.

I think it should ALL stop - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It has beyond frustrated me for quite some time now. I think you should be able to say ANYTHING you choose to say and if people are personally offended by it, then those people can choose not to be around you.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous even that a person can say the "N word" and that person is almost kicked out of the country, but yet it can be used by others and seems okay.

A friend of my son's at school was in an argument with another kid and called that kid "gay". That kid was suspended from school for using terms that could possibly escalate into a hate crime!! I mean, seriously!?!? My stepson is gay and my own son, who has the gay brother wasn't offended and even my stepson, who actually IS gay thought the school was ridiculous for that. Nothing ceases to amaze me.

I think most of it should stop, too, but remember - Nick

[ In Reply To ..]
some things have never been protected under the law: incitement to riot, sedition, hate speech (although I think that what qualifies as "hate speech" these days has gone too far), profanity in public places. In many small burgs you can still theoretically get a misdemeanor citation for using the "F bomb." Not that I think people should use the F word, but it is not protected speech. I think it is dangerous when we punish people for illogical things. I'm a straight guy, but have no problem with gay people. If someone called me "gay," I would not think it was a big deal.

Political correctness - Nick

[ In Reply To ..]
Political correctness is intellectual terrorism.

OMG, Nick, never heard it put better. Why do people try to stop racism? - Ain't gonna happen. sm

[ In Reply To ..]
As has ALWAYS been throughout the ages, racism/intolerance will never ever be eradicated. As long as there are people of different color, religion, nationality, sex, and ethnicity, there will be racism and intolerances. It has to do with human nature somehow. Now, if it is used in a hate crime or as a threat on another person, it should be illegal and the regarding laws enforced.

If not, live and let live. Even comedians use these cultural and racial differences as material with no harm intended really. Some people do not think it is funny, but oh well, they are entitled to their opinion. When people make certain comments and have no harmful intent, it is just construed that way, it is just ridiculous what people will turn it into, and how they will attack people. Having to watch every word you say that may be "offensive" is ridiculous and is, in fact, truly intellectual terrorism.

Have you ever noticed about racism.... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Any person of any color, sexual orientation, etc. can criticize, insult, or make jokes about a white person (which are actually pretty funny), and no one says a thing. They laugh, and many may even consider it true. Blacks make fun of whites....they use the N word ALL the time (and that's all it is, just a word). Where is the outrage then? Not a peep. No big deal at all. But if a white person even insinuates something funny about a black or gay person, etc., people go crazy!! If possible, the media will even try to ruin that person.

I am tolerant of all people. I do not care who/what they are. I am not so stupid that I do not realize THERE IS a difference between us, even in my own family, who I love, and that's okay. People should be different. It makes the world a much more interesting place. Everyone being the same religion, race, sexual orientation, having the same opinions and etc., and no sense of humor about it sounds boring to me.

Why do people try to stop racism? - Nick

[ In Reply To ..]
Just MHO, but I think we need to stop racism because it is just wrong. When I was a little kid, some other kids in our neighborhood were saying the "N word." My mother took me aside and explained that we must never say that word because it is disrespectful and hurts other people. Even as a kid, I understood it. In my work as a law student, I have been a big advocate of civil rights, not only for racial/religious minorities, but also for women and disabled people. That said, I think there comes a point at which it becomes ridiculous. Someone at one university made the statement that a situation at the law school created a "chink in his armor." He was roundly blasted for using the word "chink." Yes, that word can be used in a racist context, but he was not using it in a racist way here. Same thing with hoop skirts, in my view. If they are part of someone's cultural heritage (like the Cotton Ball), why shouldn't they wear them? It all comes down to sensitivity and common sense. I have a good friend, a black guy, and he and his friends greet each other with "Hi, N*****." I once asked him why they did that. He told me that they were "depowering" the word. I told him that as a white guy, I would never, ever use that word, and I didn't think anybody could--there was too much ugly history behind it. I guess it all comes down to thinking things through. In the immortal words of Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?"
But you can never really STOP racism, only get people to hide it better. - Will always be there. NM

I can agree we cannot STOP it, but - Nick
[ In Reply To ..]
we can try to educate people and ask people what it is that drives them to behave in a racist manner. What is their "payoff" from acting that way? Why do they think it is okay to treat others in a hateful way? Who taught them to be racist in the first place? Remember that old song from South Pacific called "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught?" "You've got to be carefully taught to hate/people whose eyes are oddly made, and people whose skin is a different shade, you've to be carefully taught." Every culture has its own racism. A dear friend of mine who is Chinese tells me that there is a word in Chinese that translates to "white ghosts" that Chinese people would say about white people. She says that it is just as hateful in its way as is the "N word." Polite Chinese people do not use that word, but it exists. I think there is absolutely no good that can come from being unkind to anybody--that's my bottom line.
Mixed family here, me white, husband black - kid mixed and about racism
[ In Reply To ..]
My husband would never say the N word but his brother uses it constantly, that N and this N, peppers it throughout his conversation. I have been in both black and white gatherings. We are talking pure south here. I guarantee you there is absolutely more of the N word spoken by the black race than ever by the whites. Like I said, deep south, never have any issues where we live, in fact we are live and let live. In our community such a mixture from blacks, whites, Indians, muslins, just a big mixture. Daughter told me 1 time she had the best of both worlds, could date anyone she wanted and she has. Hubby and I are on the side of the right person, not just because of a skin color.

I am so sick of hearing that Donald Trump is a bigot.  He is no more a bigot than the ISIS supporters in this country towards Americans, Mexicans over here illegally who by the way kill law abiding citizens as well.  This is a man who wants to help America and "yes" our country is the "melting pot" of many cultures and ethnicities but if you are not here legally than you have no right to health care, no right to jobs, no right to driver's license, etc. but somehow in our society i ...

Pretty soon, the left is going to lead the charge to take all religious interpretations out of names of cities and people. Can you see just about every city in California changing it's name, i.e., San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, etc. You get my drift. Also, every person with "chris" in their name will be forced to change it. No more Christopher, Christine, Christianne, etc. No more Jesus either. Won't that be a hoot. If the govt really wanted them out, they would be gone. It's just like a tax break! Not only that, and the real reason no one is rushing them out the door, a stunning two-thirds of illegal immigrants pay Medicare, Social Security and personal income taxes. Yet, p ...
