Oh how awful for the East

Posted: Jan 25, 2015

Just heard New York and in the Eastern Coast may get 20-30 inches of snow. They have blizzard warnings out and the mayor of NY has warned people to prepare and to not expect this to be like other storms. We are having snow and it is getting colder here, but we are maybe to have 2-4 inches by tomorrow. I had hoped the worst of winter was over, but at least we are not in the East. I feel so very bad for them. I hope their electricity will stay on. I have been through a ten-day ice storm and it was awful. It was not nearly as cold as they will be though. Had to finally stay in a shelter when it got too scary to stay alone in my apartment. Pitch black outside. Hope any of you living in the East heed the warnings and stay safe. I will be praying for all of you.;

Climate change anyone? - sm

Believe it or not, weather has been WEATHER all along. You just didn't hear about it before the internet made it possible.

Yup - see msg

Weather has been weather since the dawn of time. Weather has had pattern changes since the dawn of time. Heck, we had an ice age before any of us roamed the earth. Funny how they had to change it from global warming to climate change, LOL. It's just weather. What would the scientists do if they couldn't name something? They'd get no funding.

I live in a very warm climate. We do complain when it dips below 60 degrees, but I have family in the bad parts of the country and always worry about them this time of year.

Weather since dawn of time...but not level of carbon emissons - wheres_my_job

Meteorologists in general seem to do a pretty good job of predicting the weather. Meterologists almost uniformly (I admit there may be a meteorologist who disagrees) believe global warming, climate change, whatever you want to call it, is really happening, and really will have dire consequences for humans.

Yep, earth will just keep rolling along. Humans, however, may suffer catastrophically. This suffering will be due in part to HUMAN impact on earth's weather - which has NOT been happening since "the dawn of time."

You seem to think that ISN'T going to happen. I think I'll go with the scientists and meteorologists.

Guess "global warming" didn't work, so now it's - "climate change"

Anyone know how many carbon emissions are put out by Gore's airplane? HA!

I go with global warming in my part of the country - I live in t;he Southwest

Evaporative coolers are prevalent out here as it's mostly very dry and they work well in those conditions. I usually turn my cooler off sometime in the first week of October - shut the water off, close it up, everything. I had the water turned off by the end of September, but I was still using the fan and at the end of October, I was turning the water back on because it was so freaking hot in my house the fan wasn't cutting it.

I have lived in this area for 40 years and I don't ever remember it being that warm at the end of October. Right now at the end of January, it was close to 60 and I had my back door open for a while. Again, don't remember it ever being this warm in January.

Just because the terminology changed, it doesn't mean that there isn't an actual process that is happening with the global weather patterns.
It's the same thing that's been happening since - the beginning of time.
[ In Reply To ..]
There are now people who want to politicize the weather for their benefit. It's ridiculous.
I believe in global warming. It's a balmy 70's - day out here in CA. T-shirt weather.
[ In Reply To ..]
Normally it should be in the low to high 40s where I live.
Sounds like a Santa Ana. - Not unusual for winter.
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not fooled.
Except that I live on the Northern CA coast. We - dont get Santa Ana winds here.
[ In Reply To ..]
That's the problem with right-wing climate-deniers. They judge things they know nothing about.

(Ft. Lauderdale) it is a SPECTACTULAR!!! 70 degree beautiful day. Cold fronts up north mean great days down here. Hope we don't get our noses rubbed in it when hurricane season rolls around!

There are still people that think there is no global warming because it is snowing outside!
Now "they" are just blindly following - sm

whatever drivel the mainstream media puts out. Sad.

There has been global warming and cooling and climate change since the beginning of time. Did you ever hear of the "Ice Age"?
Of course we've heard of the Ice Age. BUT, - in a geological timeline, the - sm

current changes aren't happening at normal speed. Geologically speaking, the worldwide glacier and polar ice cap melting is happening at warp speed.

Even if the speed of these changes were NOT human-induced (which is so unlikely as to be laughable), there HAVE been times in past millenia when the Earth looked entirely different. Our species has always lived in a waning Ice Age. During the last temperate age there were only dinosaurs. I wonder if our species will survive the next climate age, since we don't seem to be very good at accepting it or adapting to it.

Nope, just the usual winters we always get - nm

This will actually be our first substantial snowfall of the winter. So far, we have dodged the bullet; but I guess karma is catching up with us. Hope electric doesn't go out or else my furnace won't run, brrrrr. I won't mind not working though. I'm going to research shelters and dig out my old phone that doesn't need to be plugged into electric. Oh yeh, candles, flashlights, etc. too.
Question - see msg
[ In Reply To ..]
Will your non-electric phone still get service? When we switched out, we no longer had a phone line that worked through the little wall thingies. The little phone plug thingies are still in the wall, but we don't have service through them anymore.
Will your phone work - anonie
[ In Reply To ..]
It won't work if you don't have service to my knowledge.

Also I found that I had to have a simple phone for my land line to work. I did happen to have one. I had one that had answering machine, etc. and battery backup. The plain one worked fine
Yes, my nonelectric phone...SM - Another RIMT

works if the electric goes out. I just plug into the same phone plug thingie (AKA phone jack) my cordless answering machine phone goes into. Of course, if the phone services goes out, different story.

Will not tell you our high temp today so you will - not throw rocks at me

I am in the south, no I will not say sunny because I heard what was, as we say fixing to happen, that means should happen in your neck of the woods starting soon. I have never lived north of the Mason-Dixon line and would have no clothes, no idea how to survive in the snow, weather like you all do. Stay as warm as possible and hopefully the electricity/gas will stay on.

I lived in NY/NJ most of my adult life, and finally moved to Southwest Florida when we turned 50. Best decision we ever made, but I still have family up north and always worry about them.

Tuesday morning blizzard update. SM - Another RIMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I live on the RI/Mass border. It's about 9:30 a.m. and still snowing, blowing, and drifting. I'm going to dress and go outside to clean off my car. My next door neighbor is out there with his snowblower in our shared driveway getting a jump on the final cleanup. I estimate there is 12-plus inches. You can't really tell because of drifts though. Weatherman is saying could be 24-plus by the time it stops snowing. There is a driving ban except for emergency services which makes it easier to clear the roads. Still have electric, heat, etc., but wish I didn't so I wouldn't have to work. Snowstorms like this are "old hat" here, have been getting them for years and know how to handle things. I lived through the infamous Blizzard of '78 too which shut down RI for a solid week. They learned a lot from that storm and are more well prepared in recent years.

Blizzard update - anonie

[ In Reply To ..]
I live in Indiana and survived the 1978 blizzard. Boy was that awful. We don't get blizzard warnings.

I had told my ex that they had blizzard warnings out and to wear his long johns. He didn't do it and got stuck trying to help motorists who got stuck on the road (He was a policeman in a tiny town near our city). Well, his police car died on him and he ended up in the ER with hypothermia. A city policeman talked to him in order for him not to go to sleep.

Turned out the people were not there that he had gone after.

Anyway, have also survived a ten-day ice storm without electricity, heat, etc. Had to finally go to a shelter.

I hope I never have to go through either again. Never can tell though.

Hope you don't get the extra snow. Be glad to have power though even if you have to work. At least you will be warm. I have an all electric apartment with electric cooking stove and everything would go out here. I have no clue where I would go though if that happened.

Take care and stay warm. Glad to hear from some of you in the path of this humongous storm.

Just talked to my sister in New Hampshire. They have 2-1/2 feet and it is still coming down. She and her husband are supposed to be flying out tomorrow night. It's looking like that probably won't happen.

Here in Iowa we got 1 to 1-1/2 inches. So over winter.

Climate Change FACTS - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Climate gets warmer, atmosphere holds more moisture. In the summer, more rain, in the winter, more snow.

More huge storms, Super Storm Sandy, largest hurricane ever in the North Atlantic. More northern. Because of sea level rise the storm surge will be worse. East cost is up 1 foot. More intense precipitation over shorter period of time and probably over larger areas.

IMO, the real issue here is how to reverse this damage. Reducing and changing ways is a given, but how do we reverse the damage already done?

Tornadoes in winter, record-breaking heat/cold - sm

Insects and diseases moving into areas where they were never able to thrive before. When the crop land becomes a desert and the forests are gone due to insects, will we notice then? We are seeing all sorts of crazy weather phenomenon. The scientists and citizens need to stand up to the corporate greed and willful ignorance being perpetuated.

Please pray for the Eastern part of the country. They are to get blizzard and as much as 20-30 inches of snow. I worry about electricity staying on and the temps will get very cold too. Here it is snowing some and we may get 2-4 inches and temps going down.
