13 Facts About Ferguson the Media Will Never Tell You

Posted: Nov 26, 2014

According to protesters who erupted in violence after a grand jury declined to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., this was the case of a white policeman shooting an unarmed black teenager with his hands in the air in a community plagued by racial tension.

That's an account promoted by many in the mainstream media as well. But here are several facts about the case that are harder to find:

1. Surveillance video showed that shortly before the confrontation, 18-year-old Brown stole cigarillos from a convenience store and shoved a clerk who tried to stop him.

2. The autopsy report showed that Brown had marijuana in his system when he died.

3. Officer Wilson, driving to the call of a medical emergency, first encountered Brown walking in the middle of a street and told Brown and his friend to walk on the sidewalk. Brown responded with an expletive.

4. Wilson chose to confront Brown only after he saw the cigarillos in his hand and recalled the radio report of a robbery at the convenience store.

5. Wilson said when he tried to open his car door, Brown slammed it back shut, then punched Wilson in the face.

6. Fearing another punch could knock him out, Wilson drew his gun, he told the grand jury, and Brown grabbed the gun, saying "you are too much of a pussy to shoot me."

7. An African-American witness confirmed that Brown and Wilson appeared to be "arm-wrestling" by the car.

8. Another witness saw Brown leaning through the car's window and said "some sort of confrontation was taking place."

9. After Wilson fired a shot that struck Brown's hand, Brown fled and Wilson gave chase. Brown suddenly stopped. An unidentified witness told the grand jury that 6-foot-4, 292-pound Brown charged at Wilson with his head down. Wilson said Brown put his hand under the waistband of his pants as he continued toward Wilson. That's when Wilson fired.

10. A witness testified that Brown never raised his hands.

11. Gunpowder found on the wound on Brown's hand indicated his hand was close to the gun when it fired. According to a report, the hand wound showed foreign matter "consistent with products that are discharged from the barrel of a firearm."

12. Judy Melinek, a forensic pathologist who reviewed the autopsy for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, said the gunpowder "supports the fact that this guy is reaching for the gun, if he has particulate matter in the wound."

13. Wilson said Brown was physically uncontrollable and "for lack of a better word, crazy." He said that during the confrontation, he was thinking: "He's gonna kill me. How do I survive?" Legal experts say police officers typically have wide latitude to use deadly force when they feel their safety is threatened.

No one is attacking the "kid". It is time to move on to other things, I am tired of hearing about Michael Brown and Ferguson. There are other newsworthy issues to discuss, the point is if he was not a thug and thief and if he was respectful, he would still be alive. It is done, it is over with, and those type of protesters reinforce negative thinking/response from law enforcement and media.

Forgot the part about the scared cop - that executed the person

[ In Reply To ..]
for shoplifting and having attitude. It just was not necessary to kill him, if Wilson had been properly trained. In watching his interviews, he doesn't seem to be much more than a boy himself, albeit very well rehearsed.

and profess to know exactly what you would have done in comparison to Officer Wilson's actions. If it were not for Brown attacking him, the gentle giant might still be alive, but we will never know. We all have the right to defend ourselves when being attacked, and that is what Officer Wilson did and it saved his life.

Agreed and - gentle giant

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree with your original post, but as far as Michael Brown being a gentle giant, I don't think so, he used his size to his advantage, to rob, bully and become a thug. If I had a 6'6", 300 pound thug charging after me, I would have done the same thing. One more thing, Michael Brown's step father got his 5 minutes of fame - he incited the looting and burning in Furguson, this guy needs to be jailed and sued. How old is this guy anyway? Isn't is a teenage thing when the pants are halfway down your butt and the underwear are showing? He couldn't possibly be a good role model for anyone.
I agree with you - ProMT
[ In Reply To ..]
that Michael Brown did not appear to be a gentle giant according to his size and previous criminal history. I used that term because many of his family and friends referred to him as such, but the physical evidence proved otherwise.
Pro MT - gentle giant
[ In Reply To ..]
Also the attorney, family and friends are referring to him as "a child", come on now! He wasn't in grade school, he was not a small boy, but a huge thief and a thug! A gentle giant does not steal, bully, punch out an officer, jump into a police car, and try to steal an officer's gun. He used his size to his advantage. I also do not understand why a curfew was not imposed for Ferguson, they had their protest, they had their thieving, looting and destructive time, it is now time to get serious, impose a curfew and arrest people. What about the store owners civil rights, the property owners who had cars damaged and property damaged? It is time to get serious - there are so many crimes in this country that are not publicized, why memoralize a known thief and thug? What is this teaching the real children of Ferguson, this is not an example that should be set.

I don't know how long he was in Michael's life, but perhaps Michael learned some of his bad behavior from this wannabe gangsta. This type of behavior and attitude do nothing to help the cause and the point some of the protestors were trying to make.

Isn't it amazing to hear the parents describe this guy as the sweetest, nicest person on earth? Why don't they mention he robbed a store to begin with; not to mention attacked and punched the police officer in the face. (Photos to prove it). I would like to hear the officer's parents describe their son instead. As far as the underwear thing, I could vomit going to the mall and seeing 3/4 of someone's a**.

Let's not forget. . . . - shocked

[ In Reply To ..]
Mr. Brown started the ball rolling. He decided to rob a store and get physical with the clerk. He then got verbally abusive with law enforcement. I was not there and did not witness what happened. I only have the facts as the media reported them. We all know how they like to blow things out of proportion. Still trying to wrap my mind around the mob mentality. What did they accomplish by destroying businesses that were in no way involved with this? Craziness.
Not understanding your logic. - sm

"He decided to rob a store....then got verbally abusive with law enforcement." So he deserved to die? And yes, there are rioters. It's terrible to see. By and large, these do not represent all the citizens of Ferguson. But it's so easy to judge from your armchair.
NOT JUST VERBALLY ABUSIVE - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
I said it last night, and I'll say it again. He was a punk. Big-mouthed and physically as well as verbally abusive. It is YOUR logic that is hard to understand. Sometimes people make choices that they pay for. This is one of them.
First off... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I was quoting the person who posted with the alias "shocked" when I referred to verbally abusive. Speaking of which, I don't really appreciate you virtually shouting at me in all caps. Do you behave like that with the people in your life when you disagree with them?
She was not shouting, she was emphasizing - also
[ In Reply To ..]
On the other hand I read your message and I felt like screaming. Yeah, sometimes people do react with anger especially when you put words in their mouth they did not say. Not saying that's what she did, but the party putting words in her mouth are deserving of it. Then you say she's "judging from her armchair". Are you kidding me?????

You tell her she's judging people when she's not and then you wonder why she gets mad?

I don't think she appreciated the things you said to her. Do you always make up things and behave like that with people in your life when you disagree with them?
That's not what she said and you know it - sm!!!
[ In Reply To ..]
She never said he deserved to die. Twisting words is not a good thing.

She was not judging either. For criminy sake!

She stated the obvious facts. He robbed a store and roughed up the owner. Any person whether they be female or male, white, black, indian, chinese, or any other culture committed a crime. So are you saying that black people should be allowed to commit crimes and all other races are not?

This would have never happened if he didn't do the acts that are warranted of someone calling the police cos a store is being robbed and the owner is getting beat up.

When a perpetrator goes after a police officer who is trying to arrest him for a crime he committed and the perp beats up the cop and goes for the gun just what exactly do you think is going to happen. Brown put himself in the position he did. It was a travesty and could have been prevented BY BROWN HIMSELF. Now we're all supposed to feel sorry for the thug who stole, beat up the store owner and attacked a police officer and tried to grab his gun. What do you think that he just wanted to look at the gun up close to see how pretty it was? We all know what would have happened if MB was successful at getting it.

Police officers risk their lives every day to protect the citizens from criminals like MB. It's a dangerous job. Have you ever gone on a ride along? Have you ever seen what they have to deal with every day? They have to be ready for anything.

So what's next? Exempt all black people from the laws? Only white people should have to obey the laws? If a police officer is trying to arrest a criminal after committing a crime if they are black and resist arrest or try to run away the cop should just let him go so they can go and commit more crimes. MB is not the victim here. He is a criminal who stole and attacked and tried to grab a police officers gun.

And now you have violence, threats to rape police officers wife, threats that they are going to start killing all white people they see in sight. And where's our government on this? Telling swat and national guard NOT to help the police get it under control. Telling the violent rioters to "stay the course", inciting it and letting it happen instead of trying to get it to stop.

HOW NICE!!!
Great Post - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
It takes courage to stand for what's right. You said some things people are avoiding saying here. It's sad but true. The mentality of the looters and people burning innocent people's businesses and property speaks for itself.

No, MB got himself killed for attacking a police officer - who was doing his job

[ In Reply To ..]
It was the actions of MB that led to his own death. Nobody but he is to blame. If he hadn't stolen merchandise, roughed up the store owner and attacked a police officer who was responding to the 911 call he would still be alive. It was MB's choices that put him in the unfortunate position he is in.

This white woman thought OJ was innocent - Not on jury but watched
[ In Reply To ..]
every single minute of it and also the endless programs on every night following it. I was not in awe of him, not a football watcher, never saw him in movies, etc. If others watching had paid extremely close attention to what was said and shown they would have noticed what I did. Supposedly a pair of gloves bought (those were the gloves - if it don't fit you must acquit gloves) by Nicole at Bloomingdale's. She would have bought those in accessories. The receipts shown on TV did not have anything that related to gloves, no certain amount, no number to identify them as gloves, did not say gloves, nothing at all. The receipt shown up close on TV and nothing was there. All that information should have been there but was not. I tried repeatedly to call into Larry King that same night to voice what I saw and never could get an open line. They said same gloves but nothing identified them on the receipt as such. My husband at that time (black by the way) watched OJ during his football years and he said this was not the way black folks kill you. They don't stand up close and stab you, usually just shoot you. He said OJ was just a shell of what he was at one time, his knees were almost gone with arthritis and all the hits he took. Anyway, my view.

When police officer Darren Wilson left the scene of the shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, the officer:

1. returned to the police station unescorted,

2. washed blood off his hands and

3. placed his recently fired pistol into an evidence bag himself.

An investigator with the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s office testified that he opted not to take measurements at the crime scene.

The investigator did not take his own photographs at the scene of the shooting because his camera battery was dead, he said. Instead, he relied on photographs shot by the St. Louis County Police Department.

When Wilson returned to the police department after the shooting, he was permitted to drive by himself. No one photographed his bloodied hands before he washed up at the station because “there was no photographer available.”

Brown - Lee

[ In Reply To ..]
After having read the transcripts on line, I agree with your summary completely. What is sad about Missouri is that so many blacks remember the sting of extreme discrimination to the point that there were actually billboards along the highways saying "Nigger Don't Let the Sun Set on You in This County." So, I imagine the witnesses who lied or thought they saw what they did not, or were relating what others claimed to have seen were wanting revenge for past injustices. My impression is that this was an uncontrollable young man who was accustomed to getting away with things due to his size and brashness. The officer had no choice but to defend himself.

Well said, Lee - NM
