building on the healthy Thanksgiving post below

Posted: Nov 24, 2014

I had something relatively decadent.  boneless skinless chicken cooked on the stovetop with butter, garlic, salt, pepper and dried onion.  BUT instead of fries or chips with the sandwich or allowing myself a sweet treat later i'm eating edemame with my sandwich.  It is time consuming and keeps my mind and hands busy, taking me longer to eat and therefore eating less, hopefully.  I think I will start substituting edemame for fries or chips with all of my snacks from now on

;

meant to say the chicken was on an Cobblestone Mill onion roll - what happened to the edit option?

geez

I love edamame, but it's too time consuming - to peel off the shell

I was just saying something similar to my student helper today, that if it's not easy, it's not worth eating. Hee-hee! Another thing I've discovered is that eating in front of the TV is very, very bad. I lose track of how many chips or how much ice cream I've devoured!

Your chicken with butter and garlic sounds yummy. I'm going to make that now, since I have chicken breasts thawing in the fridge!

well that was kind of the point, edemame keeps your hands busy - so you won't eat as much.

You can eat a whole bag and not feel guilty :)

My husband was so looking forward to his Thanksgiving - feast and now told had to work

You could never talk healthy Thanksgiving to him. Now he is not all about the cakes, cookies and pies but he wants his turkey, wants his stuffing, wants his cranberry sauce and some vegetables along with that, some greens, green beans. He is not overweight, a good size and to say hey, lets have a healthy Thanksgiving, he possibly would think we might want to try a walk around the block after his feasting. Healthy as far as food, such as prunes, cherries, berries for Thanksgiving would be starting WWIII on our block, no thanks.

I'm a little torn with this discussion since Thanksgiving only comes around 1x a year. - I agree with those who want..

opt for healthier alternatives and I agree with those who opt for traditional since it's only one day out the year, why not go ahead and enjoy good food with family and friends. If you have to eat that way for your health that's also totally understandable.

I agree with you and almost posted a similar message - anonymoose

I don't think there is anything wrong with traditions and a traditional Thanksgiving if that's what you like, and if you're not into traditions or want to try healthier that's fine too. There is nothing wrong with either. I'm kind of torn because I like tradition and my husband doesn't and wants opposite of tradition. I created a dish by accident that has now become a once a week staple here. It's turkey breast sauteed with beans and tomatoes. It is so so good, so cheap, and so easy and fast to make. It lasts the two of us 2 meals (in fact we just had the leftovers tonight). So...I'm thinking this morning of traditional Thanksgiving dinner, but not a whole turkey as there are only 2 of us, instead getting a half a turkey breast, and I'd like some mashed potatoes, his grandmothers veggies dish and my grandmother's jello dish. Thanksgiving is about the only time we have it. He likes it okay. I could eat the whole thing by myself (which I usually end up doing) :-) Last year I didn't make it, he wanted plain jello. Wasn't the same thing. So I'm sitting here this morning, my mouth watering thinking about a thanksgiving meal, that takes maybe 1/2 hour to prepare, not a lot of leftovers and not a big mess to clean up. What does he say to me? I'm not big into Thanksgiving. I'd just assume have the turkey with beans and tomatoes. I'm thinking I don't care how good it tastes, we have that every week. I want a more traditional meal, but not go hog wild (low on funds anyway). But if you say to him this is a tradition he wants no part. So anyway...don't even know if he'll go to the store to get the stuff. If he doesn't it will be New England Clam chowder for us.

I do like traditions though. Kind of makes me feel grounded and brings back so many good memories of childhood.

I understand exactly what you're saying because there are certain foods I only eat on Christmas and Thanksgiving so I look forward to having them that once or twice a year.

It's not everyday that you get to have Thanksgiving dinner or even every week for that matter, we are talking a once a year thing.

Have you thought about making getting yourself a turkey breast, leg, wing, or thigh and preparing a small dish of mashed potatoes? You could also do the turkey breast that he likes, but make your breast separate to have with your mashed potatoes and make the jello dish and just put the plain jello in a separate dish and use some of it to make a small dish of the jello you want to have? My husband wouldn't care if I did it that way. We actually do dinner like that fairly often when we are both in the mood for separate things. For example, I might want my chicken baked and he wants his fried and I want brown rice and he wants potatoes.

Do you think he would mind if you did it that way on Thanksgiving?

I know there are a couple of things I can't afford to have for Thanksgiving, but I most definitely plan on having them for Christmas.
That's exactly what we are going to do - anonymoose

I don't think he would care because he likes all the things. I just don't say its tradition. I just say I'm in the mood for some baked turkey mashed potatoes and his grandmother's veggie dish. I'll post the veggie, jello dish and my pumpkin muffins, which are always a good treat in the a.m. and on Thanksgiving is just good. I'll post that tomorrow once I have some sleep here.

He'll go for that as long as I don't say it's tradition. Or I could say, it's Thanksgiving and I want these things to eat because I like how they taste and it will only take 1/2 hour to make and they taste good.

Now I just need him to go to the store to pick the stuff up, which I don't think he wants to go out this week. So have a feeling it's going to be soup for us.
Husband and his feast. There are just the 2 - of us and he so looks forward to

Thanksgiving. He prepares a big bird. We do not go and eat until we pass out, nothing like that. He prepares everything and after that dinner is over we never have any turkey to go bad. He reminds me so much of my grandmother. If she had left overs be it food or clothing, it always wound up used, not in the garbage can. On just regular dinners my DH can take 1 turkey breast and make a complete dinner from that using in pasta dish, stir fry, cooked with rice in the crock pot. He is so inventive you never feel like just another piece of left over turkey. Any turkey is cut off the bones, either put in another dish the next week or frozen to be used later down the road. I am set to work already but I do not do the cooking here. He is sometimes off from his work, the job says not this year. He is really disappointed.

Anyone Else Having A Healthy Thanksgiving?Nov 24, 2014
All these recipes sound great - but I can't eat them. I have to (want to) get my weight down - haven't baked anything since July, food diary, all that jazz. So now the holidays are rolling around - I went and got a small turkey, brussel sprouts (I love brussel sprouts), one sweet potato, an avocado, celery, I already have kale in the house. Also nonfat yogurt (yes, I took the plunge from lowfat to nonfat yogurt and skim milk from 2%). Organic "only peanuts" peanut butter. Oliv ...

Interesting Checking On Syria And Iran Building A Naval StationOct 23, 2012
All the pundits, news bloggers, etc. are making fun of Romney's comment on Iran and Syria. I was curious, so looked up a map of the Syria and the relationship between Syria and Iran. It sits on the Mediterranean Sea. So, no problem with Iran building a naval station in Syria. It gives Iran 2 ways to get to the open ocean and since Iran and Syria are bestest buddies, it makes sense. It would also give Iran and Syria access to missles being able to hit our allies since Iran's missles wo ...

'Death Panels' Debate Returns To Congress: Congressman Building Support For Proposal Apr 29, 2010
The House health care provision that Sarah Palin warned would lead to "death panels" never made it into the final bill, but its backers plan to resuscitate it. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), who shepherded the amendment through the Ways and Means Committee, is building House support for stand-alone passage of the legislation that would allow Medicare to reimburse health care providers for consulting with patients about end-of-life decisions. Palin's charge that the effort amounted to a "d ...

ThanksgivingOct 10, 2011
I know it's a little early but i'm a planner.  What do you usually do at Thanksgiving?  This will be new for me as it is now just me and my 10-y/o son.  In the past he'd usually go hunting with his dad and I'd cook/bake all day.  They'd come home with any "wayward" buddies for dinner.  My parents live 4 hours away and I'm not really too keen on just sitting around staring at eachother or the TV (as what happens with any other visit).
