Reaction to the president's immigration plan

Posted: Nov 21, 2014

"The president's decision is not a political victory. It's a victory for families. We know well that this decision is not a permanent solution. It is a first step. If we had it our way, President Obama would be signing a comprehensive immigration bill into law instead of an executive action, but can't sit idly by waiting for Republicans to act while homes are being broken up all across this nation." — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Hey, Harry!  They are not legal American homes being broken up.

"Instead of working together to fix our broken immigration system, the president says he's acting on his own. That's just not how our democracy works. The president has said before that 'he's not king' and he's 'not an emperor,' but he's sure acting like one." — House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Our immigration system is not broken.   Our government is broken, and this arrogant president is moving forward against the will of the People, including even his Democrat cronies!  Who is really running this country?  Because it certainly is not Obama, the puppet.

Good post.

Thanks

Well, as the president said, "then pass a bill" - tired of gridlock

He hasn't done it yet and is going on the road to sell the EO, so Congress has time. In fact, I think that's what this whole thins is about, to light a fire under Congress' butts because he gave no time frame to sign it.

Republicans in the room, can you tell me exactly what is wrong with this EO, considering it's almost identical to GWB's bill that your Senator's blocked in 2007 other than the fact that it's an EO?

http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/infocus/immigration/

Because it's virtually no different than what Obama is saying now.

So if it's NOT just the fact that it's an EO and it's NOT just the fact that you hate Obama and will block everything he tries, then take Bush's prior bill and rush pass it through Congress (ya know, like you tried to do Keystone)

Excellent questions, hopefully someone will answer - holding breath-nm

*gasp*

The rhetoric makes me ill.. - me

Well, if it's all about families being separated, guess our military better not be deployed either - they are much more important than illegals in this country and sometimes don't come home at all, or so badly traumatized/hurt that they are unrecognizable to their families. I don't buy what is being sold - do it right or stay home.
House Republicans--try passing a bill - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
They do not even have a bill on immigration. They cannot get anything done. They are like 2 year olds kicking and screaming.

He's signing it today in Las Vegas. - Debi

I guess it's ok to break the law now.

Then there's a few hours left for Republicans to make a better offer - than "I'll sue you"

[ In Reply To ..]
If Republicans want to prove they ARE willing to work with Obama on legislation, they'd best find a better way to do say than "I'll sue you" and they have just a few hours left to do so.

All it would take is Boehner or McConnell coming forward publicly to say "Okay, we will work with you on passing legislation immediately" or "we'll take GWB's bill from 2007 and reintroduce it with changes and new sponsors."

But no, they'd rather focus their energy on lawsuits, impeachment or government shutdowns, proving the necessity for EO to begin with - they're not interested in the content of the bill, they just want to shut HIM down.

Where are you getting this feed? - sm

I haven't heard this. Is it from MSNBC?
EO today just on "Deferred Action" for 2 Immigrants - not EO on Immigration in Total
[ In Reply To ..]
I am both the original responder to the OP about believing this is strategy to push Congress to act and the response you are replying to.

I think there is some confusion on what the president is actually signing today, myself included, until now.

According to Fox News, he is heading to Las Vegas to rally support and sign an EO of "deferred action" on 2 illegal immigrants only until the final decision has been made.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/11/21/in-immigration-speech-obama-will-announce-protective-status-for-two-groups/

Because if he was signing the EO on immigration overall, he wouldn't be heading to Chicago on Tuesday to rally support.

http://politics.suntimes.com/article/chicago/obama-chicago-tuesday-boost-immigration-executive-orders/fri-11212014-1049am

If this is incorrect, somebody let me know. (I know you will:)

Thanks for asking that. I saw a quick commercial on CSPAN and I wasn't clear which EO was being signed today.

Regardless, my point remains the same. Whether several hours or weeks or months, Republicans better start finding a better way to seem they're willing to work with the president than saying they'll sue him.
Not 2 immigrants, it is 2 immigrant GROUPS - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
This would involve upwards of 4.5 million ILLEGALS.
My apologies, 2 groups. Yet it is still for DEFERRED ACTION - until a final EO/Congress decision?

Illegals will pay taxes? Really? Many of them will make so little, they will qualify for the Earned Income Credit.

Obama Defends Plan To Act On Immigration: CBS InterviewNov 10, 2014
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama defended his plan to use executive powers to implement some immigration reforms, saying in an interview broadcast on Sunday he had waited long enough for Congress to act.  Obama told congressional leaders on Friday he would try to ease some restrictions on undocumented immigrants, despite warnings from Republican leaders that such actions would "poison the well" or would be "a red flag in front of a bull." Republican-led House Blocks Obama Immigration PlanDec 04, 2014
Washington (AFP) - In a symbolic rebuke to US President Barack Obama's unilateral action on immigration, the Republican-led House of Representatives voted Thursday to block his plan to shield millions of people from deportation. The bill, which passed 219-197 along party lines, was introduced by conservatives furious with what they consider Obama's abuse of power when he announced his executive order last month. But it is unlikely to reach the floor of the Senate, where Obama's ...

Guess somebody's pretty upset over it. Too bad. I hope the Supreme Court also upholds it, but I'm tired of Obama trying to change laws. Click on O's pic and you can play the video. BTW, I applaud AZ for taking matters into their own hands since the government has been so lax in protecting its citizens from crimes committed by illegals. Obama Immigration Fix:Mar 03, 2015
4 Million Illegals, Who Never Paid U.S. Tax, Get 3 Years Of Tax Refunds You have to admit it sounds crazy. The normal rule is that the IRS can audit for three years, so you can usually go back three years to amend your return or claim a credit you forgot. Since an illegal immigrant under President Obama’s executive action can now get a Social Security Number, the immigrant road map is c ...
