New kitten found and want to help out but

Posted: Oct 30, 2014

if there could be an issue bringing the kitten in with my cats. The kitten looks to be about 4 or 5 weeks, not newborn, has eyes open. Has anyone had any issues with bringing in a baby kitten with cats already in their homes? Thanks. ;

it's commonplace for little strays to have fleas and worms - sm

You wouldn't want to introduce parasites to your indoor cats or your home. If you were to bring the new kitten to the vet for a worming, a flea bath, and shots, it would be much safer for your inside pets. There may even be a community vet clinic that will perform these services at lower cost, particularly since you are saving a stray.

So little, still blue eyed, wonder if even old - enough for shots yet

I could take it to the vet the early part of next week (or even Saturday morning.

Is s/he white with blue eyes? - antigeekess

If so, it's likely deaf (unless it's going to turn Siamese, which are born white). You could segregate the little bugger in the bathroom for a bit if necessary.
Not in all cases - we have a pure white kitten with blue eyes - Now is 3 years old and no hearing problems

I have heard before what you wrote, but it does not happen in every case. I sure hope it's not deaf.
Kitty is a tabby, not all white at all - Know most eyes are blue to start

and know she is hearing as when you talk to her the little ears are rotating back and forth. I kept her 1 day for my daughter, oh my, how to work and hold kitty. I put all of her 9 oz in a sock and put her down in the front of my blouse/bra where she could be close by and that mostly worked. Daughter has found lady willing to keep for a month or so until the 3 week old can start to eat food and not need bottle feeding. My daughter named her Annie (after Little Orphan Annie) as my daughter loves that show.

is there a way - NK

you can isolate him in a bathroom or a spare room until you can take him to the vet? That's probably best until he gets a clean bill of health.

well, the vet will know about shots... - sm

meanwhile, you just don't want to introduce parasites like fleas and worms to your indoor cats.

Most adult cats when they get a new really young - (before 6 weeks old)

kitten in the house they'll be unusually protective over it, especially female cats. It's happened to me. I've brought in ready-to-wean kittens into my house and my 2 older cats tormented that kitten. All was fine in a couple weeks, but for those 2 weeks I didn't leave the house. I've also brought in a 4-week-old kitten thinking I'd have to protect her from the others. I didn't know she was that young, but I knew something was wrong when the adult cats went right up to her and started licking her all over, very protective. My advice would be to take the kitten to the vet first to take care of any fleas or ear mites and to deworm her as she's a stray and then bring her in and I'm fairly certain the older cats will be more protective than anything to her. (Even if they are a little aggressive towards her, it will only last a couple weeks before suddenly she's part of the family.)

I never saw or felt my male cats nipples - until I brought in a kitten

[ In Reply To ..]
He was all growly toward her the first day but in the middle of the night I heard like a suckling sound and the next morning he was letting the kitten nurse on him!! In the next few days his nipples stuck out like crop circles on his belly and after about a week he needed tiger balm on them they were so chapped!

You do need to make sure no fleas/worms/ear mites, it can quickly get out of hand with multiple pets.

Don't say "nipples" - That's vulgar

[ In Reply To ..]
Especially boy-nips.

It is??? What do you call them? - Ventral glandular orifices that shall not be named

[ In Reply To ..]
NM

Um, you do medical transcription - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
Have you never heard nipples dictated in a report, particularly OB/GYN or oncology? If you have, do you change it? And to what?

are you joking? - nm

[ In Reply To ..]

so boy-nips - is the preferred term?

[ In Reply To ..]
lol
Saw nipples used in Huffington Post article - today, part of anatomy
[ In Reply To ..]
There is nothing vulgar about the word.

Hard to Know - But...

[ In Reply To ..]
The other cats may begin to spray to mark their territory. This happened to us. I have also seen it go the other way---the older cats become protective of "the baby." You just really don't know how it will go.

But, you should take the little thing to a vet and have all the things done that are mentioned here. When kitty is old enough, have it fixed.

Meant to Also Say... - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
...have it fixed whether you are keeping it or not to save other poor unwanted kitties from being "out there." You are not obligated to keep it, but I would find a way to have it fixed.

Rest assured, I have all my cats fixed - Do not contribute to the problem

Too many out there that need homes, you can always adopt from shelter if they don't wander thru your yard.

New Kitten. Help!Apr 22, 2017
We got a new kitten about 2 hours ago.  She is almost 11 weeks old and got out of the designated room I had set up for her.  She is currently under a chair in the living room.  Please tell me what to do.  Is it ok to let her stay under there?  For how long?  Any advice is welcome.  Thanks! ...

Missing KittenNov 20, 2009
Need advice.  My daughter's 7-month old kitten managed to knock loose a corner of a window screen yesterday morning and jumped out!  Needless to say, I was home alone, working in my office, so I figure she had about a 2-hour head start before I realized what had happened.  Been all over the neighborhood, have many neighbors on the lookout, but no luck yet.  We live in an area that has many potential kitty hiding spots (woods, etc.)  I'm at a loss and feel horri ...

Update On Getting A KittenJul 15, 2010
Just wanted all of you who responded to my post and were so kind after the death of my cat on Sunday that we have a new addition to the family.  I decided to look at our local pet store yesterday on my lunch hour.  It must have been fate.  I was looking for a tortoise shell kitten (I've always loved the colors) and one was just brought in within a half an hour before I got there.  The woman who brought her in was a foster mother to her and her brothers and sisters.  ...

My Dog Killed My Kitten Last NightSep 11, 2013
the kitten was really a stray that came from my mom's and was living in my garage, but I had been feeding it and it was starting to be a little bit friendly, and it was really cute.  Every time my dog saw it he would chase after it and bark but I never thought he'd really hurt the kitten.  Last night he grabbed it and shook it and broke it's neck.  I picked the poor thing up and held it while it died and told it I was so sorry.  I'm so mad at my dog and I ...

When To Start Feeding Kittens Kitten FoodMay 27, 2011
We have kittens :-)  We don't know exactly when they were born but their size is that they sit on the palm of my hand.  We know they are at least 4 weeks old, maybe 5 or 6.  They are running around, bouncing, wrestling with each other and just little balls of energy.  We're are learning which ones are the trouble makers :-)  My question is they are still nursing from the mom.  A couple have shown interest in eating kitten food from a can, which is what we ...

Found Something In My PieJan 30, 2012
Last night I purchased a pie from a large chain grocery store that bakes on the premises and whose reputation is very good. I bought it for the others in my house, but decided to taste it this morning after they raved about it. I put my fork around what felt like a large chocolate chunk, put it in my mouth, and it turned out to be a metal frosting decorator tip. I didn't bite it or swallow it, as I was going to let it melt in my mouth to just savor the one bite I was going to indulge in. ...

With such a tight race between Obama and Romney, I got to thinking what would happen if neither candidate got 270 electoral votes.  For anyone who cares...this is what I found: What happens if no presidential candidate gets 270 Electoral votes? Each state delegation has one vote. The Senate would elect the Vice ...

I Found This PostingSep 05, 2013
I found this posting elsewhere and I wonder why nobody has had the courage to state this before, anywhere. I am posting it here to hopefully give some insightful thought into recent occurrences concerning Syria and the United States: "It's weird how Obama wants to avenge the deaths of a bunch of Muslims in Syria, but not the deaths of OUR people in Benghazi." This kind of puts perspective on where exactly the loyalties of this current "president" lies... certainly not with the peo ...

What CNN Found Hidden In ObamacareJan 09, 2013
