Would you throw away $100?

Posted: Oct 27, 2014

I haven't had a raise for 4 years working for this MTSO.  The minimum wage went up in my state last year.  I am making around $100 more a month now.

Yup.  It means something.  Everything has been going up except my family's wages.  You absolutely CANNOT tell me that keeping the minimum wage so low (or doing away with it all together like many of the Neandrethal Republicans would like to do) is good for any MT.

As a republican..I don't believe I've ever been against raising the minimum wage...at least a little bit higher. However, you go raising the minimum wage like people are wanting ($15 to work at McDonalds) is utterly ridiculous because it does nothing but hurt small businesses, cuts employment for unskilled workers and it leads to prices going up. When the prices go up, you are right back where you started before your raise. My husband runs a business and this administration has done nothing but hurt businesses. Over 50% of the working population works for a small business and this administration is full of lawyers who know absolutely nothing about running a business....let alone a country successfully. I'm glad that $100 helps you but perhaps that $100 you get a month doesn't help the unskilled worker who was let go because that business couldn't afford his job because they had to pay the rest of their employees a higher minimum wage. We all want more money and I understand that. We always think more money will get us ahead when the reality is the more money we all make, the higher the prices get.

My $100 is no where near $15.00 per hour - see message

The comparison between what the minimum wage is and $15.00 per hour is not valid. That is more than double the federal wage. Our state increased the wage by less than a $1.00 an hour.

The "small business" I work for, the CEO makes millions.

Everything costs more--we MTs are skilled workers who deserve a raise to cover these extra expenses.

Right now, I am very happy the gas prices and heating prices have come down, it might be a better Christmas this year after all.

The only problem is, our wages have been - dropping for so long now, that -

it will take a lot more than just $100 a month extra to even begin to catch up. At minimum wage, even when newly raised, we'll still be on food stamps or in foreclosure.

That whole "throw away $100" is the same thought that runs through my head every time someone tells me how they don't have enough money to pay the bills, while puffing away on their cigarettes.

Your comment reminds me of business owner - Minimum Wage MT

A well-to-do business man in our small community made a comment at a school board meeting: "If you give the office girls a raise, they will just buy a better brand of whiskey."

Yes, it is mostly a war on women, minorities and the poor.

I'm sorry you misread my post that way.

I was just speaking from experience. I once had 30k of credit card debt and a low paying job, and was living paycheck to paycheck. When I realized what a mess I was in I cut out everything except essentials. No more eating out, no toys, no activities that weren't free. I cut it all to the bone to get out of that financial hole.

I have a lot of sympathy for the poor, because I've been there. I don't have much sympathy for people who whine about their financial situation while setting fire to money in the form of tobacco, or partying, or getting tattoos, etc.

But then, I've always been a big proponent of personal responsibility.
Don't you still have a low-paying job being an MT? - Most of us are at minimum wage now.

Curious. Maybe you work in MT management??

out the window.  I am already sick of the slick ads from both sides, the pundits analyses and predictions (I so lost it with Chris Matthews this morning!), the pollsters, etc., all directed by the media and in turn by people with big money interests in one side or the other.  My mute button will be getting a lot of use this year. ...
