I'll be avoiding the politics forum while I prepare to vote.

Posted: Oct 24, 2014

The level of political discourse on this forum is petty and childish far more than informative or objective.

Maybe one day we'll all learn to break free from our political masters, stop regurgitating the nonsense that they feed us - and (dare I hope?) discover that no party is worthy of blind devotion or has all the right (or wrong) answers.

This nation is at a point in its history when we need citizens who know when something is proven and when it isn't, and citizens who cherish patriotism over partisanship.  In short, citizens who can't be seduced by the slogans, exaggerations and outright lies that have become the stock in trade of the political machines, and of the media that are supposed to be reporting on them objectively - but are not doing so.

Thank you so much for saying this. I do read (and occasional reply) to posts on this board. However, so many of the posts are based on emotion and passion instead of facts. I know we all are interested in learning more about how and why things work the way they do. Thanks again for your post.

Its is very easy to discern between the two - sm

One side, in particular, rarely posts a legitimate source for the misinformation they post. It seems fairly easy to google the subject and come up with the source of information. The most legitimate sources seem to be the local media covering a story. Also, there it is pretty easy to spot the "echochamber" where there are no legitimate sources.

Also, obviously insulting and derogatory posts rarely contain facts and truth. As you say, too emotional.

I agree - sm

Just to correct the poster above me who wrote that the conservatives have no legitimate sources, while the liberals are always correct.

That is just not accurate. There are many legitimate sources and they happen to fall in all arenas. The sources that the liberals always poke fun of, well I find that amusing, because when a conservative source is ragged on here and called not credible because its a conservative source a few days later I see the same information in the mainstream. I always sit here and think what took you so long.

But the post above me is incorrect on just about all counts. While praising her side for being such upstanding moral citizens while the side she doesn't like are all liars and nobody can believe anything, she is failing to read the headline news that is independent from either party.

Blame goes on both sides. It is not easy to discern between the two because they both do the same thing. There is no difference. The "echochamber" (i.e., latest liberal buzz word) is on both sides. There are plenty of legitime conservative/independent sites.

What she did have correct was her last sentence. "Also, obviously insulting and derogatory posts rarely contain facts and truth. As you say, too emotional.". That's why people have been saying to stop with calling people names like Tpub, commie, Tbagger, demonrats. It is very emotional.

The first step is campaign TV/radio ads need - to be banned in this country.

When have you ever heard even one (from either party) that wasn't at least partly based on fear, lies and exaggeration? Too many people believe all that negative drama, and don't bother to read about the issues.

Question, though - Mary

[ In Reply To ..]
Would censorship of the negative ads (which I absolutely detest) fall into the realm of freedom of speech?

No, not if you sensor ALL campaign ads. They're - a blight of the nation"s airwaves.

My Understanding Of This ForumFeb 22, 2012
I love to discuss political issues in an intelligent fashion, and I have friends w/ vastly different opinions than my own.  Sure, sometimes it gets a little heated because we are committed to our beliefs.  Thing is, we can sit and discuss the issues w/o calling each other nasty names and judging each other.  Maybe I'm a bit naive, but I can't understand ehy we can't address issues w/o personally attacking each other.  Some of the posts here would make a stellar ...
