Top meteorologist now admits: "Climate Change" is bogus.

Posted: Oct 23, 2014

Why is this important?  First, because the Obama administration in general, Obama's energy-related policies, and the "rules" that have been promulgated by the EPA under his watch have been predicated on what we've known for a long time - the sloppy science, the agenda/$$-driven data manipulations and outright falsehoods in the climate change industry - and they have not only been enormously costly to the US economy but have prevented the US from achieving energy independence, to say nothing of funneling $millions and $millions to Obama cronies.

Second, in line with this betrayal of America's interests, Obama plans to tie the US up in a forthcoming "climate change agreement" that will set the US back even further, and he plans to do so in a way which will side-step the Senate's prerogative of approving international treaties.

If there is any limit to this man's utter contempt for the balance of powers provided in the Constitution or the arrogant abuse of his office, I have yet to see any evidence of it.

Some observations - Critical thinker

[ In Reply To ..]
John Coleman is not "now" admitting this. That suggests that he has had a change of heart. In fact, he has been a global warming skeptic since 2007.

John Coleman is also not a "top meteorologist". He is a weatherman. Coleman has not actually done any research in the field of climate change, and lacks related formal education. His main claim to fame is founding the Weather Channel - he was no doubt quite a good weatherman and businessman, but those are vastly different fields than climatology.

I'm not surprised that the Daily Express got these basic facts wrong. I'm sure it was intentional - they are, after all, the British equivalent of a tbag rag.

The pictures across the top of the article (so-and-so bares her breasts and her bum, so-and-so flaunts her chest, so-and-so strips down to a red bikini, etc) surely underscores the Daily Express' commitment to serious journalism!

Your one-sided information was taken from a website - trying to besmirch his good name.

[ In Reply To ..]
So, you read a bunch of websites and decide for yourself and all of us what John Coleman is or is not. No thank you. I can make up my own mind.

In addition, it's not just the Daily Express reporting on this issue. There are many other sites that were not cited by the OP nor by you. Go and have yourself a nice day now and please try to be happy.

P.S. John Coleman is not the only person on the planet who thinks this whole global warming thingie is a hoax!

No need to besmirch. It's called his bio. - Sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Coleman has a degree in journalism from 1957. Never studied any of the earth sciences. Zero. Zip. Nada.

The reason he went postal on climate change and environmentalists has nothing to do with the science and everything to do with Sunday Night Football. Yes. You read that right. Football. During an Eagles vs Cowboys game in 2007, the network dimmed their studio lights during pre-game and half-time shows as a nod to "Green is Universal" week. I'm gonna take a wild guess that the Cowboys are his favorite team since Coleman lives in Texas. In any case, missing that part of the broadcast hacked him off bigtime and he's been spewing this nonsense ever since.

He freely admits his beef is not with the science, but rather with environmentalists' "motives" (see link). The bulk of his rhetoric centers around government vs business interests. In other words, it's political.

So here we have a retired white-haired 80-year-old conservative weatherman who's expressing an opinion that aligns with a tiny minority of climate change doubters in the scientific community. He makes the rounds on Fox and in right-wing media rags on a regular basis. Big whoop.

Snopes starts out by distinguishing between meteorology - and climatology
[ In Reply To ..]
then quickly points out how Coleman is well versed in one but clueless in the other. After that, they directed the reader to a long, long, long list of rebuttals from real climate scientists at the end of the article, linked below. See how much you missed...LOL.

He was born in Alpine, Texas, so I still say his climate change tirade is nothing more than an ongoing fit he first threw over missing his fix of pregame and halftime Cowboys trivia, especially since he admits as much.

The science is speaking for itself right now. And the science says that man-made climate change is real, is happening, and is a massive threat.

The overwhelming majority of climatology scientists understand this. The Pentagon understands this. The Vatican understands this. The European Union understands this.

Unfortunately, a disturbing number of conservatives with a poor grasp of science do not understand it, and insist on trumpeting their ignorance as loudly as they can.

It's called research. LOL. The guy is not a "top meteorologist." He's a weatherman. If that's good enough for you, then you're all set, and clearly you've already made up your mind. I missed the part where this poster decided for you or "all of us what John Coleman is or is not." The poster merely posted information just like the OP.

You said: "Go and have yourself a nice day now and please try to be happy."

So, you read 1 post and decide for yourself and all of us what this poster is or is not? No thank you.

Debate - Critical Thinker

[ In Reply To ..]
One sided? Perhaps you don't fully appreciate what a debate consists of. The OP presented a deeply flawed article as if it were somehow gospel. I responded with some facts. You remember facts - those pesky little things that make conservatives so uncomfortable.

Fact: John Coleman is not qualified as a climatologist. I'm not making this up - it's HIS OWN words: "While I am not qualified to do Climate research, I am a highly qualified professional in the field." (source http://heartland.org/john-coleman)

Fact: he does not have a science-related degree. He has a *journalism* degree. I am not in any way besmirching him. By all accounts, he was an excellent weatherman. And he had enough business acument to start the Weather Channel, which is a very respectable accomplishment. But neither of these qualify him in regards to climatology.

Here's an analogy. My dental hygenist is extremely good at her job. She is rightfully proud of her skills, and I'm happy to make use of her services. But I'm not going to go to her for an opinion regarding a root canal. You see how this applies to our discussion, I trust?

You are certainly welcome to make up your own mind, but don't expect your opinion to go unchallenged when it is uninformed.

And yes, I'm well aware that there are a number of media outlets that claim human-caused climate change isn't real. They have in common that they all ignore the vast overwhelming majority of qualified climatology scientists who say otherwise, and have the data to support that position.

he is not a meteorologist at all - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
"As Coleman's critics have noted, he does not hold a degree in climatology or any related discipline, nor has he studied or conducted any research in that field; he merely parrots arguments advanced by others. Moreover, much of his criticism of climate change deals with impugning the motives of those engaged in that discipline rather than refuting the science behind their work."

[ In Reply To ..]
Thank you for the link. The snopes entry does a decent job of debunking the notion that John Coleman is qualified to make any claims about climate change.

His resume is indeed impressive. He has clearly put his journalism degree to good use and been an excellent weatherman for a very long time. Apparently he was quite good at making short range predictions about local weather.

But a journalist is not a climatologist. And a weatherman is not a climatologist. And local weather is not global climate.

in a waning ice age. The glaciers have been receding the whole time. The climate IS changing, and has been swinging back and forth between warm and cold for as long as the earth has been here. According to scientific findings, the earth eventually WILL leave the current ice age behind and become warmer. This has happened over and over again for billions of years. But what's different this time around is that our species has been multiplying, unchecked by nature the way all other species have been in the past, and spewing out pollution and chemicals that have changed the makeup of the atmosphere, and have very likely caused the changeover from ice age to warm climate to speed up. Geologic studies of past ice ages show that they ended much more slowly. Geologically speaking, the change we're experiencing now is crazy-fast, and there appears to be something seriously wrong.

I think if humans are going to survive this inevitable change, then they need to stop trying to convince themselves that it isn't happening, because it IS, and it always was. We just caused it to speed up. Instead, we should be changing how and where we live, in order to successfully adapt to a new climate, rather than simply allowing it to wipe us off the earth.

(Which could still happen anyway.)

Maybe it will be a good thing.... - climate change

[ In Reply To ..]
Since temperatures will eventually go the other way again - get colder - maybe because of man's influence on climate, it won't get quite so cold next time the pendulum swings - the temps over a couple of thousand years will actually be warmer by a degree - won't that be special....

The danger to humans isn't the actual warmer - climate, or even the flooding. (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
The danger lies in the fact that we're artificially speeding it up. Something that hasn't happened before, so the results will be less predictable, and likely not like the results of other warmups in the past. And of course the danger to us in the speedup is that it allows our species far less time to adapt. Something we're obviously not very good at. We always think we can control nature, but we're pretty lousy at adapting to it and living in balance with it. As a result, Mother Nature may very well decide our species needs to go away permanently.

of this guy is the conservative disconnect where not only climate change is involved but all kinds of issues. The same conservatives that will argue that climate change is a hoax because the earth has been warming and cooling for millions and millions of years will look you square in the eye and argue with equal conviction that the Bible says the Earth is 6,000 years old.

I have a very good conservative friend who I literally had to take out a piece of paper and draw a diagram to show her the disconnect in her various different arguments. I won't go into detail about the different political arguments, but after discussion of the climate change issue with my friend, we then began another discussion where she explained the Bible tells us the Earth is 6,000 years old. So I said something like, "how does that square with your climate change argument that the Earth has been heating and cooling over millions of years. So she says something like, "no, the galaxy is millions of years old and has been heating and cooling for millions of years, but the Earth was put into the galaxy by God only around 6,000 years ago." So I said something like, "so God placed Earth in the galaxy 6,000 years ago, and then it began heating and cooling and has been for 6,000 years," and she said, "no, heating and cooling for millions of years." Frustrating. So I then took out a piece of paper and started drawing, saying, "this is the galaxy; this is the Earth." I literally had to diagram the disconnect on paper for her and help her connect the dots, and it was like a light bulb went off over her head that the Earth is a certain age that is a finite number and that regardless of what age you decide you believe Earth actually happens to be, it can't be both.

The disconnect in conservatives can sometimes drive me literally crazy because they will argue one thing and turn around and argue the complete opposite thing, and if one is true the other can't be true, but they somehow have this disconnect where they believe them both equally.

All due respect to the poster, and they are certainly entitled to believe that climate change is a hoax if they wish, but again there seems to be a disconnect here. The poster argues about "sloppy science... in the climate change industry" as one of the reasons that climate change is unbelievable but then turns around and presents evidence from a non climate scientist and expects people to believe his science. I would say that if the guy admits he is a meteorologist/weatherman and not a qualified climate scientist, anything he has to say regarding the subject of global warming/climate change would quite literally qualify as the very "sloppy science" that the poster argues is unbelievable.

Oh dear - Critical thinker

re: Your conservative friend; You showed a great deal more patience than I could have mustered in that circumstance! Thank you for that.

And you're quite right about that severe disconnect. It seems to be a hallmark of many conservatives, becoming more pronounced the further right one goes.

I've experienced the same frustration you mention, many times.
