How popular do you think Pay Pal is?

Posted: Oct 23, 2014

If you were going to sell something online, would you feel comfortable using PayPal as payment exclusively?

Thank you.

It's very popular with ME, anyway! I use it - all the time. (sm) - Lotus

In the beginning (years ago, before I joined), there was some kind of a hack or security breach, but it was fairly minor and was fixed.

I really like it for buying things online, not only because it offers more security than just typing my credit card number in every time I buy something online, but also because I don't have to go find my wallet, dig out my card, put on my glasses, and try to read the number, which I'm frequently likely to enter wrong!

The fact that it pays the seller instantly has put me in A+ standing as a recommended buyer on eBay, and I'm working towards selling enough to get an outstanding recommendation as a seller, too. As a seller, I have the security & satisfaction of being paid in full BEFORE I ship the item.

I also use it to pay my rent, since my landlord lives out of town. That way the rent is never late due to our slow and rather unreliable local post office. Nothing is perfect, but I think PayPal is a good thing, and makes e-commerce so much easier and safer.

Thanks. What I want to attempt to sell are - DZ

crochet patterns I've designed. I have no idea how this will turn out. I only know I'm not making enough as an MLS and must try something.

Thanks again.

Is it true that PayPal can freeze your bank account? - And other bank accounts associated with you at you

[ In Reply To ..]
I have used PayPal to buy things with no problem, but I am nervous about using it for selling. I have read that if there is a problem with a seller that PayPal can freeze the bank account you have linked with your Paypal account AND other accounts you might have at the same bank. You sound very reliable and trustworthy so you probably have not had problem, but do you know if this is true? Or where I could get reliable information about this account freezing thing?

PayPal is just a third party - You have authorized

to communicate with your bank account, not to control your bank account. They can never freeze your bank account or like that. They can withdraw and send money to your account on your behalf and that's it. Simply, It's like I can send you the money via online transfer to your account and can withdraw the checks if you have given/authorized any to me. They have no rights and access to mess with my bank account other than that.

On your sign up you authorize them and the other call to your bank can de-authorize them.

It's possible that what they're talking about - "freezing" is the PayPal acccount. (sm)

When you buy using PayPal, I believe there is a form of buyer protection in there that means the seller can't use the money that comes into their PayPal account (less a small fee, which is normal) until the buyer has received their item(s). If the seller doesn't honestly represent the item, such as saying it's in brand-new, unused condition when in fact it HAS been used, or the item is damaged and the seller didn't disclose it, PayPal doesn't release the funds until the problem is resolved. That's easily avoided, however, by taking lots of good photos, describing any flaws, and packing breakable items well so they can't be damaged in transit.

There IS a small wait-time when you sell something successfully using PayPal... a couple of days. You can then either transfer the money to your own bank account, or keep it there to use the next time you buy something. That was kind of cool - because after I sold some stuff on eBay, after the seller's fee was taken out, I still had $75 in my PayPal account. I just left it there, because I knew I'd be buying again on eBay before long - I get about half my clothes that way.

So I'm pretty sure that's the "account freeze" you were told about.... the PayPal account that holds the money you receive when you sell.
Thanks so much - For clearing that up

You explained it so much more simply than what I had read or heard about. Having an actual person with experience is worth more than 3 pages of instructions and 10 pages of horror stories!

It has worked great for me! - SickNTired

I have been selling things on Ebay and Etsy (to supplement my meager earnings as an MT) and I have never had a problem. I also use it to pay for items (much safer than giving your bank account or credit card numbers to a lot of different companies).

Very. I wasn't sure at first... - but now

but now that I've been using it more often (for a gardening hobby), it's very efficient, organized, safe, and easy.

Besides eBay, many other companies take it, and I - prefer to use it.

I also sent money to my nephews through it. I have used it for years and have never had any problems. I think it is great.
