We are not allowed to talk about any patient

Posted: Oct 15, 2014

I am just reading this morning about the nurse who has tested positive for Ebola in Texas after taking care of Eric Duncan. Nurse understood the risks of working so close to one of the world’s most feared viruses and tried to reassure her family that she would be safe. When nurse’s mother learned her daughter was caring for Thomas Eric Duncan, nurse told her: “Mom, no. Don’t worry about me,” family friend said. How would the mother have known had the daughter not told her? Is that not a violation of HIPAA? If someone else told the mother should the daughter stated could not divulge information on a particular patient? ;

was her employer. The conversation could have been in the context of being in the same building and knowing that she was in healthcare. Also, we are held to HIPAA standards at offering information, but do they train nurses in proficient lying. What if her mother looked at her dead in the face and said "Are you taking care of him?" Even if she did not answer affirmatively, her mother probably knew.

I know many people who would have problems working in the same hospital with a confirmed case.

that's not a HIPAA violation - sm

You can say you are caring for a patient with cancer. You just can't say their name.

You do not know the circumstances - sm

His identity was already public knowledge. His family released it.

You do not know what she told her mother or what her mother pieced together. You also do not know if she had permission to inform her family. It would have been hard to hide it.

Right. Neither do you. - nm

Re. Nursing Home Patient(s)Oct 15, 2009
Several family members while in nursing homes have been approached by religious "Zealouts" trying to push the "right faith" by staff or so-called "visitors" on them. I am so sick of it! Communication And Ebola Patient In DallasOct 01, 2014
Today's Ebola news shocker (not!!) is that information obtained from a diligent and thorough nurse failed to make into clinical decision making, and the patient was sent home with antibiotics for undiscovered Ebola. Properly handled, the patient would have gone into isolation at that time, and been treated with appropriate supportive measures, and not spent 2 additional days exposing others to the virus. If many more Ebola cases occur as a result of this totally commonplace error on the p ...

No Baskets Allowed To DNCSep 06, 2012
Any comments on Charlotte area churches being told they could not deliver "welcome baskets" to delegates at DNC. Media has said they were not pushing their faith or an agenda, simply wanted to give NC pralines, directions, offer to help if baby-sitting needed, etc., but were told no as their pro-life agenda was not consistent with the platform of the DNC.  I guess the DNC does not need the southern Christian vote now? Remarkable that we can no longer have a different opinion (or should ...
