The GOP needs to re-evaluate its standards of what constitutes an "issue". Looking beyond tabloid fodder might be a good start.

Bush is being pulled? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]

No one forced Bush to hold the dog while saluting; he chose to hold the dog, more than once.

The outrage against Obama while giving Bush a pass is pretty silly, in my opinion.

And here is Bush signing his autograph on an American flag.  Classy.

I don't remember the outrage on this one either.

No, not pulled in these pix. - Very nice pix, BTW.

Thank you. :-)

P.S. Barney is so cute. RIP, Barney.
Bush saluted correctly. Excellent pics. - Thanks for posting them - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Everyone needs to remember the correct way to salute. You don't salute while holding something in the hand you are saluting with.

It is obvious that the pics were taken at the moment after he touched his forehead with his hand. That's what happens when you are ending a salute. The hand comes away from the head.

Poor Barney had trouble walking in the end, so of course he's going to carry him down the stairs. Shows how much he cared for him.

Excellent pics. Thanks for sharing.
Nice story, but Barney was born in September 2000, and that photo was taken in 2001 when - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Barney was a spry dog of around 1 years old. Bush wasn't carrying him because the dog couldn't walk. Another problem with your version of events is that Barney died in 2013, a full 5 years AFTER he left life in the White House behind.

Lastly, I guess you never saw the Barney videos produced every year by the White House around Christmas, the ones where Barney and Miss Beazley are running all over the White House and even come flying down the stairs? See the link below for the 2006 edition of the Barney videos. In those yearly Christmas videos, those dogs were everywhere and getting into everything.

It's interesting to me the lengths that conservatives will go to in order to make excuses for their guy and give him a pass and on the flip side the lengths they will go to in order to criticize President Obama.
Barney is so cute!!! - Thx for posting.

Who cares. Barney was a cute dog - Person you replied to
[ In Reply To ..]
I actually really don't care whether the pic was taken at 1 day, 1 year or 100 years. So he carried his lovely little dog.

That's excellent about the videos at the WH around Christmas. So glad Barney could run around and play. Good for him. He gave a lot of people a lot of happiness (except of course the Bush haters).

But then again, that is not what the post was about. The post was that President Bush was saluting the correct way, unlike the disgraceful styrofoam cup salute. Well not even a salute, an insult to our military. Done on purpose? I hope so, otherwise it just shows ignorance.

I also don't care about anything in your last paragraph. We call it as we see it. Nobody is giving President Bush...oh wait, um, er "our guy" (snicker snicker) a pass or think we are criticizing Obama. When you disgrace yourself comments will be made.

But thanks for the pics of Barney. He is adorable that's for sure.
Obviously, the answer to who cares is: You. - sm

You said:  "Poor Barney had trouble walking in the end, so of course he's going to carry him down the stairs. Shows how much he cared for him."

Barney was around 9 here.......... 9 months, that is.

You obviously cared enough to make up an excuse for President Bush's Barney salutes.  Meanwhile you accuse President Obama of being disrespectful.

If Obama had done this type of doggy salute, we know conservatives would have been all over him for his disrespect to our military.

Here's a picture of Bush disrespecting our entire country by desecrating our nation's flag.  What if this were President Obama; would conservatives be offended?

Thanks for jumping in with your cute yet incorrect story to defend Bush and showing a very good example of the double standard at work here and the enormous amount of fake outrage coming from the perpetually offended far right conservatives.

And quite obviously, you care. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Otherwise, why would you feel the need to defend every little (and big) thing about this president? I think it's called being on the defensive. It's a shame that this is what it has come down to, but sadly, nothing the Dems can do or say will change history. In this case, history will prove that he is an epic fail of a president who has no grace.

You (or the person who posted above) claimed not to care. I certainly never did. Whoever defended Bush by making up an untrue story about why he was carrying the dog sure cared enough to defend him, and something you will see quite frequently on this political chat board is people that will actually take the time to post in order to point out when something someone posted is untrue. I think it's called setting the record straight.

Bush was not carrying Barney because he couldn't walk like the post claimed. It is a shame that somebody would say that was the case when obviously anyone can simply verify it, and then there'd naturally be no need for a correcting post. There's no amount of little (or big) stories that the right wing can spin that will change the truth or alter history, and we liberals will point out the facts when we see the truth being rewritten. We agree that history will prove that Bush is an epic fail of a president, and indeed history already is. That's why he's hidden during the Republican conventions and why his name is not mentioned during prime time and why conservatives have no living president that can stand up and speak, thus the empty chair.
No, I do not agree with your statement about Bush. - Do not tell me what I agree with.

You said: "It makes you lose credibility by implicating someone else in your belief system."

That's quite an interesting statement coming from somebody who just insisted that history will agree with their belief system about President Obama. Please keep in mind that one also might lose credibility when making up stories to excuse Bush for the doggy salutes while completely ignoring the subject of Bush's desecration of the American flag, all while holding President Obama to a higher standard.

One needs only to read the sentences to see that I clearly was referring to "we liberals." Obviously, we liberals that remind posters on this board regularly that they cannot possibly know the president's beliefs are not generally going to respond in kind that we somehow know yours.

I did not change a single word of my post.

I also think it is infinitely more interesting that not a single patriot or conservative on this board chose to discuss Bush's desecration of the American flag and palpable disrespect of our country in doing so. We truly could have a meaningful discussion about presidential politics and the double standard that exists regarding President Obama versus any other president that has ever served our country, if only a single poster representative of the right wing will acknowledge that glaringly obvious fact.

You claim: "Yes, you did edit your post. You may fool some people, but I'm not one of them. You used to pull the same thing when you used your moniker."

There's no actual need on my part to fool you about anything, so I'm done with this thread. I do understand making up a story about a young and spry dog in order to fool yourself and others with "poor Barney had trouble walking in the end" and praising Bush for "how much he cared for him," all while bashing Obama for virtually the identical issue of imperfect saluting, and I do understand making up a story in order to fool yourself and others with talk of clairvoyance and your ability to know who is who and who posts what on an anonymous political chat board where some posters use monikers while others don't.

What I'll never understand is why when presented with a chance to actually discuss the very real political issue regarding the double standard that exists regarding President Obama versus any other president that has ever served our country, conservatives continue to either ignore the issue or feign its nonexistence.

What a lot of conservatives don't understand is why liberals deflect, divert and defend every time an issue about BO is brought up for discussion. The liberals are on the defensive so much there is no room for discussion.

Regarding your other point about using or not using monikers, one's writing style can sometimes give it away. So can time of posts. (I watch CSI...LOL.)
Flag code - TomQ
[ In Reply To ..]
You'd think the President of the US would have a clue about the Flag Code.

"The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature."

Of course Bush didn't receive any guff about it - the louder someone proclaims they're a "patriot", the less likely they are to actually care about such trifling things as the US Constitution, or the Flag Code.

Maybe W should have dropped Barney on his head. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Huge difference here. We all know BO has contempt for the military. That's probably why the disrespectful salute. I've seen half-hearted salutes even without the cup. He has no respect for his generals so how can he have respect for the Marines standing at the bottom of Marine One's stairs? Faux grace as its finest.

Maybe Barney shouldn't have forced Bush to hold him? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
You're acting as if Bush did not have a choice of whether or not to hold the dog while saluting, and that's just silly.

Bush would have had to drop the poor dog on his head? Why is it okay for him to salute while holding an animal at all? If Obama did that, everybody would go ballistic.

Double standard, simple.
Not silly. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
We don't know about Barney's behavior or tendencies. We had a 4-pound Yorkie while growing up. She was sweet and loving, but hated anyone in uniform and would go into attack mode. No double standard here, just a disrespectful president giving more weight to his cup than to the office he unfortunately holds. Faux grace as someone said.

Salute protocol - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
There is a protocol as to who salutes whom in the military according to grade.

Two references to RONALD REAGAN having made up the presidential habit. Great surprise! He had a flare for the dramatic, if nothing else.

Military & Defense More: Task & Purpose Military Culture Obama

Sorry, The Presidential Salute Isn’t A Real Thing

Task & Purpose

Brian Adam Jones, Task & Purpose

Soldiers were supposed to salute their president; the president was not supposed to salute the soldiers. No modern president, not even old General Eisenhower, had saluted military personnel. It might even be, well, sort of, improper.

But here’s the issue: There’s no regulation that stipulates presidents must salute the troops. In fact, for the first 192 years of our republic, it didn’t happen.

None of the first 38 commanders in chief did it. And some of those dudes had some serious military experience. Eisenhower? Grant? I mean, Teddy Roosevelt was a war hero. Surely he felt compelled to click his heels together and cut a perfect knife-handed salute when he passed a uniform service member, right? Wrong. It was literally something that Ronald Reagan made up one day.

Read more: http://taskandpurpose.com/sorry-presidential-salute-isnt-real-thing/#ixzz3EFFs0FoM

According to standard military protocol, it is not appropriate for the President of the United States to return salutes from uniformed military personnel because, although the President holds the title of Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. armed forces, he is not himself a member of the military, nor does he wear a uniform. The tradition of U.S. presidents' returning salutes is a fairly recent one which began with the administration of President Ronald Reagan in 1981:

Barack Obama went to a gym at a military base in Hawaii nd did something positively Reaganesque — he returned a Marine's salute.

In so doing, he wandered directly into the middle of a thorny debate: Should U.S. presidents return military salutes or not?

Longstanding tradition requires members of the military to salute the president. The practice of
presidents returning that salute is more recent — Ronald Reagan started it in 1981.

Reagan's decision raised eyebrows at the time. Dwight Eisenhower, a former five-star general, did not return military salutes while president. Nor had other presidents.

John Kline, then Reagan’s military aide and now a Minnesota congressman, advised him that it went against military protocol for presidents to return salutes.

Kline said in a 2004 op-ed piece in The Hill that Reagan ultimately took up the issue with Gen. Robert Barrow, then commandant of the Marine Corps.

Barrow told Reagan that as commander in chief of the armed forces, he was entitled to offer a salute — or any sign of respect he wished — to anyone he wished, Kline wrote, adding he was glad for the change.

Every president since Reagan has followed that practice, even those with no military experience.

The debate over saluting has persisted, with some arguing against it for protocol reasons, others saying it represents an increasing militarization of the civilian presidency.

"The gesture is of course quite wrong: Such a salute has always required the wearing of a uniform," author and historian John Lukacs wrote in The New York Times in 2003. "It represents an exaggeration of the president's military role."

He's not a real president after all. With all the disrespect he has shown to the military and our country it's about time he gets back what he dishes out.

The military respects the office, whoever sits in the seat needs to earn respect. Over 6 years later and he has not shown any signs of earning respect.

I say stop saluting this person, or better yet the military should all carry styrofoam coffee cups and salute him holding the cup. He is a disgrace and embarrassment.

Once we get a real president in, deserving of respect then go back to saluting him.

Please - one example

[ In Reply To ..]
Of how President Obama has "disrespected" the military. And please don't give me a bunch of links, just an example in your own words. You obviously have such strong feelings on the matter and seem to think it is obvious, which it simply is not.

I beg to differ with your opinion. I believe he HAS earned the respect of the military, except those who blindly follow Rush Limbaugh et al (when I found out they broadcast him on the military station overseas I signed many a petition to get him off to no avail - imagine being a woman serving abroad and having to listen to that garbage!).

In addition, he, Vice President Biden and especially Michelle Obama and Jill Biden have been an incredible force working to try to get good treatment and support for veterans and their families.

So please, he IS a real president, he is NOT a disgrace.

Ask any soldier if they were offended by the styrofoam cup and I would imagine not. Getting into stupid wars, now THAT is offensive.

The article linked to below was provided by the poster above - "This is a pretty good synopsis..."

Written by a Marine, detailing the history of the presidential salute, and why he personally felt President Obama's salute was "impeccable in every way."

Oh pullease - I suggest they stop saluting

[ In Reply To ..]
The military does not respect him.

As for his "latte salute", here are comments:

President Obama's salute was incredibly disrespectful to the Marines. No way to justify that one.

Wait - did President Obama just salute the Marines with a LATTE in his hand?!

Put down the damn coffee cup.

When trying to lead a coalition, show the world you respect the military. This isn't just Tuesday, it's the morning after war.

Say what you want about Bush, but at least he respected men & women in uniform.

The National Republican Congressional Committee said, "(T)his might be the most absurd video of President Obama we’ve ever seen," and is using the clip to solicit donations from the offended.

But in the future, leave the latte on the chopper, or at least transfer the beverage into your left hand & salute properly.
Stating the same thing over and over again - does not constitute an example
[ In Reply To ..]
Do you have any quotes from actual soldiers? Do you have proof that this offended them as mortally as the right wing media would like you to believe?

I asked for one example, I am not trying to justify anything, because I don't happen to believe the salute is anything at all to mention.

You are the one who thinks it's such a shameful act and shows such disrespect.

I do not believe you have provided any proof that it does offend the military, it only offends you, and even that you don't have a lot of reason for, except maybe everything the president does seems to offend you.

Stunning - TomQ

[ In Reply To ..]
It is truly stunning how desperately the anti-Obama crowd cling to every little opportunity to complain.

Here you go kids:
The president is a civilian. There is no law, statute, regulation, or US Code that requires him to salute. In point of fact, the Founding Fathers quite specifically didn't want the president to be a member of the military - which is why they put civilians in charge of it.

The only "low class" aspect of this situation are those people who insist on trying to create a scandal where none exists.

You benighted rabble can just go on pretending that you hate him because of his policies or actions. We more enlightened folks know the real reason.

Even FOX-BOR thinks the Pres. Obama salute - issue is stupid.
