Mosquito survey

Posted: Sep 23, 2014

This year wasn't too bad for mosquitos until we got a bunch of rain recently & now it's a feeding frenzy! I'm allergic to them & steadily developing allergies/reactions to the things that repel them or help one deal with it (like Benadryl). I need to know what states or parts of states don't have this as a serious problem.  I just can't take this anymore! There must be someplace in this country where mosquitos aren't a huge problem. I like where I currently live except for these bugs. Windows open 9 months out of the year is wonderful, but it would be great to go outside sometimes. Any recommendations on a new location?

the desert southwest. I live in NM and mosquitoes are rarely seen, and only during the "monsoon season" from June to August or September, unless you are a golfer or hiker and in the areas with grass, trees and/or shade -- but places that are getting water on a regular basis. Other areas that probably don't have too many will be Arizona, the extreme southeast California, west/southwest Texas (Amarillo and El Paso), Nevada, possibly western Oklahoma and maybe southern Utah. Probably the easiest way to determine what states are on your radar would be to look up yearly and monthly average rainfall totals to find your driest states. The extremely dry climates will be a great adjustment and even more so during the winter months. Once you have made a decision on the prospective state, strongly suggest visiting before moving. I have been here in NM for 30+ years and plan to move back to the east coast, and looking forward to moist, younger looking skin. The dryness will age your skin. I just plan to use Off for the mosquitoes. You also might try taking Vitamin B1 to ward off the mosquitoes, as I had a friend who confirmed with her pharmacist many years ago that it does work. She inquired after hearing that the professional baseball players used to take it to ward off the mosquitoes.

Thanks for the suggestions. Spent some time in New Mexico years ago, but it was winter at the time, no bugs. Same with Arizona & El Paso area. It's beautiful out there but didn't know what summers would be like, other than hot. I'm severely allergic to DEET and having problems with a lot of the other sprays now too. Will try the B1, sounds nontoxic. I do plan on visiting any serious location possibilities but can't visit everywhere from where I am now... too far, too expensive. Thanks for narrowing it down.

vitamin B1 appears to have some truth behind it. I am thinking of a trip to Costa Rica this next summer and in the information I just received the tour tells you about vitamin B1. It tells about how to take 2 weeks before the tour to ward off mosquitos. I would think that would be a good thing if bothered by them, especially around your home.

Thanks for the additional on B1. Will pick some up next groc trip. Getting rain again, so the bugs will be worse. Have fun on your trip if you decide to go.

I live in Michigan and we have had a lot of rain this summer and had quite a few mosquitos. I treat my lawn, flower beds, trees, pretty much everwhere mosquitos are with Cutter lawn spray. Hook it up to the hose, spray everything down and it kills all mosquitos. It lasts for up to 2 months. We are able to walk in the yard without being attacked, we can sit on our deck day and night without being attacked. I think this summer I only got bit once or twice. Cutter spray is wonderful and works great.

Now our problem has been bees. If someone has a way of getting rid of them that would be great. Its not the mosquitos we dodge its the bees. They are horrible.

I'll research the Cutter product. I'd love to be able to go outside without being swarmed. I have pets who go outside & need to make sure they won't be harmed by the spray. They all eat the grass sometimes, especially the cat. Thanks for the tip.

I have a pet too and once it dries (10-15 minutes) it is nontoxic. - nana7

Good to know, thanks! We've sprayed for ants & had to keep the dogs off the yard for a couple of days. We'd do the back yard & let them out the front, then later do front yard & let them potty in the back. The Cutter search said it didn't dissolve in water, so wasn't sure if it would do harm to critters.

Mount Desert Island, Maine, has nearly none for some odd reason! - ETOHPRN

In all honesty, I haven't been out of New England much in my lifetime, so my view on such things is pretty limited.

Where I live, we get hit HARD by mosquitoes and these little bastards called black flies that pretty much ruin spending outdoors in springtime after a long winter (unless you wear a full-on fugly bug suit, which is what we do!). Mosquitoes soon follow and those guys are always really bad after a summer rainstorm.

However, every darn time we have gone up to Acadia National Park and the Mount Desert Island area in general (it's only about an hour away from us), there have been NO blood-sucking insects...that goes for black flies, mosquitoes, AND deer flies and horse flies! I don't know if it's the near-constant ocean breezes or the salt water or what, but that is THE place we run away to when it gets bad at home, as my husband is on blood thinners and bleeds like a stuck pig from even the teeniest bite.

Even while hiking/biking in the trails in the woods of Acadia National Park we didn't run into hardly anything. Weirdest thing!

I live somewhat coastal now & when the wind is blowing, it's not bad, can go outside with no problem. When it's not a windy day, it's hard to do anything without being swarmed. We used to live in areas where mosquito bites would just itch, but here, it's a whole other story. I get hives & burns from them. The pain lasts for a couple of hours. I'm ready to move on. Husband doesn't want to move because of medical things he has here, but it's becoming a medical problem for me to stay, so am looking for an area that can help us both. I'd love to be able to stay coastal somewhere. Will do research on all the areas suggested by those who have written. Much appreciated!

They certainly won't win any fashion awards but they really do make it possible to enjoy being outside again!  Lots of people wear them even *gasp* out in public around here ;)

My husband is also a diabetic with constantly high sugars and he swears that makes him a tasty target for the biting bugs.  I hardly ever get bit and he says, "Why would they want your icky blood when they have the all-you-can-eat sweet treat buffet standing right next to you?"  I think he may have a point.

:)

Link below to the one he wears.  He usually wears just the jacket but come shorts season, he will wear the pants.  I got a kid sized one for our daughter and it's prevented her from even bee stings and ticks!  Very handy items of clothing!

Wow, not sure if I could do that, but it's definitely interesting. The mosquitos here bite me through my clothes, so I haven't been able to wear anything that would repel them. I understand your husband's comment. Mine used to say the same thing. He still gets bit, but he just gets itchy. Up north, he felt like a buffet meal. At that time, I wasn't attacked much... they were full after they got him! lol Where we live now, though, is a whole other story. I just can't take it anymore. They're just as bad as fire ant bites (I get those also but not much now since I rarely go out anymore.) I can go out in winter, but that's a short season. I'll research the suit. If it's made of something that the bugs don't bite through, that would be something to add to wardrobe. I don't care what I look like. It could make it possible to walk the dogs again.

No Matter What I Do I Seem To Be Getting A Lot Of Mosquito Bites This Year.Aug 17, 2012
I guess I will have to wear a long sleeve shirt out there and I already use sweat pants.  I even spray and get bites when I am trimming the yard.  I dont like getting all those bites with WNV around.  I am probably immune if there is such a thing with all the bites I get. ...

Survey On PillowcasesMar 18, 2015
Recently, I have noticed a lot of case-less bed pillows on TV shows.  I also noticed it at someone's home -- a bed pillow in the living room, no less, and I do not think it was case-less because they were doing the wash.   I am not sure what to make of this.   Do you use pillowcases?  If so, do you do anything special with the open end?   (I fold mine in envelope-style.) Edited to add:  Do you use a pillow protector under the pillowcase?   (I do.)   ...

From Survey: Three New Facts About The Tea PartyAug 25, 2013
There are some very interesting insights here. And we all need to brace ourselves. The arsonists would burn the barn down first--if they could, but the GOP hasn't figured out how to do without their fire. Note that a Rasmussen poll shortly before this April survey found 8% of VOTERS identify themselves as Tea Party (49% of voters disapprove them). You'll notice this study finds half of current Republicans (who make up about 1/3 of the electorate now)"identified with the Tea Party movem ...

Taking A Survey On ObamacareOct 25, 2013
Has anyone tried to sign up for Obamacare or at least checked what their rates would be? If so, are your rates better or worse than what you have now? Were you able to get thru the website and actually get a policy? Have you received a letter stating that you will lose your insurance at the end of the year?  If so, will you shop on your own for insurance or use the Obamacare Marketplace? I've heard so many horror stories about the ACA.  Just trying to get an idea of what is ac ...

Jobs Added, But Who's Getting Them? Survey SaysSep 08, 2015
So, unemployment is supposedly improving but somehow it just doesn't feel like it.  I went to a local strip mall where my Safeway is located yesterday and was sad to see that there were 2 more vacancies just since I'd been there 2 weeks ago, making 6 now.  One was my favorite take-out teriyaki restaurant.  Just gone like smoke in the wind. Well, this might throw some light on things:  Since 12/2007, native-born Americans have had a net LOSS of over 700,000 jobs whi ...

Casey Anthony Trial SurveyJun 06, 2011
Following this trial and listening to commentary there is very little doubt it seems that Casey Anthony murdered her child and disposed of the body. I think a lot of the bias is because she is a pathologic liar.  Aside from the lying can anyone take a leap and think she may not be guilty of murder or that the state is not proving it beyond a reasonable doubt? Does anyone believe she was molested by her father/brother which caused her psychopathic lying? I heard Geraldo Rivera comment ...
